I was happy with the stock ROM. All I needed to do (to get the OTG cable and USB SNES controller working) was use that easy utility from the XDA forums, to unlock and root the stock ROM. Only problem is that the N7 won't charge in its dock while the OTG cable and USB controller are plugged in.

So how do I keep the stock rom (rooted and unlocked) while using the CM10 kernel?

Would using just the CM10 kernel with the stock ROM allow charging in the dock while the OTG cable and USB controller are plugged into the N7?

I don't know if I'm just retarded or what, but I can't get the N7 to charge while the OTG is hooked up to a mouse or flash drive. In fact, it's not even charging when nothing else is connected (using the OTG, it charges when I'm using just the charger with the OTG). Is this a problem with my N7 not being able to read the OTG cable or is it an issue with the cable itself?
I've tried both Timur's and Faux123's kernels. They both allow me to use the flash drive and mouse, after rebooting, but neither works with the charger together. Is it the cable if, when I only connect the charger to the female micro usb of the OTG, that it connects and then immediately disconnects? It won't stay charging. But my devices, the HTC One X and the N7, both recognize it, at least for an instant. Is the problem with the kernel, flashing the kernel, or the cable?

Plug the cable to your wall. Plug your peripheral into cable, plug cable into nexus 7.should work.

I've used a cable recommended by others and it works for me. Try dx.com and search "otg power cable Samsung" and you will find some. I believe this is the one I bought:
http://dx.com/p/cy-u2-165-le-left-9...le-for-samsung-i9100-i9220-i9300-black-206194

You can also get them via eBay with the same search. A search (otg power cable) in this subforum should yield the older thread I'm remembering.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I did this and it worked. It's a bit annoying that I have to unplug evening and then plug them back in, but it's better than it not working at all. And it's not like I could make a kernel like this either haha.

The one I have is the one I found on Amazon. It says it's for Samsung, but if you look through the reviews there are people who say it works for their N7s.

Hi there,

I'm on last ParanoidAndroid ROM 3.6, anyone knows if the kernel of paranoid is compatible with the Y-OTG cable or do i have to flash the Timur's USB host kernel, and what is the right one for my ROM, Android 4.2.x kernel or CyanogenMod 10.1 kernel, since Paranoid is based on CM...

Thks

Paranoidandroid kernel's doesn't support USB host charging mode but some versions of M-Kernel have the patches. Look at the change logs of versions in OP.

Guys, is this the right cable? Says can't charge phones or tabs
People on this thread have explained that you need a special kernel to support OTG + charging. So yes for a normal phone that cable will supply power to the USB device but not to the phone.

What if you use the Y cable to charge with both ends? Double the power?
Or maybe you fry the chargers and/or nexus 7? Haha idk..I suppose it could work because it's like putting batteries in parallel, which increases amperage. But if the power doesn't get used charging (e.g. 100 charged), the 2 chargers might not have anywhere to go, maybe then it would overload the charging circuit on the nexus 7?

can the n7 charge on an OTG cable without a custom kernel?

talking about just basic charging. no y splitting to other peripherals.

I tried making my own split cable, but n7 refuse to charge while pin 4 is grounded (for OTG). I tried adding a 100k resistor between pin 4 & 5 and charging works, but I lose OTG.

nope :( I;ve got the same result.
I've got Y-OTG works only with Timur's kernel (USB ROM)? but in that way you dont need any resistor.
looks like stock kernel doesn't support this at all. (I mean validation of power for switch states)
