[NIGHTLY] [ROM][GRJ90] CyanogenMod 7 for Samsung Fascinate (fascinatemtd)

Not to be rude, bc I do appreciate the responses, I am not having an issue with apps. I wasn't getting low space messages. I only ran around 40ish apps. The problem was that even with all the suggestions for oc and rom control tweaks I was having major lag after a day or so of usage. Sure I understand that we have very little ram, however, when I add a number to contacts and the phone app takes over 20 seconds to load, I consider this significant lag. And all apps were do this. Nova launcher. OC'd a little or a lot.

The deciding factor for me was just simply search Google to see if other people with different phones were having the same issue. And in overwhelming numbers even people with stock phones updated by carrier and brand to ics, they were having same issues as me.

There is no denying the new hardware rendering is great and prettiness is great, but maintenance is key. I feel I should be able to use the phone for what it is without problem, lag, or having to reboot or clear cache or have to worry about 5 apps optimizing it.

It's a computer. Imo it should run just as fast as day one all the time. Take care of maintenance by itself without bothering me. And accomplish everything I need it to. And Imo ics just isn't there yet. (as I'm a full time mac user, all this is true and so I expect the same out of other computers) So back to cm7 gb until this fall for a new contract and shinny new iphone.

I know, blasphemy! But just as Steve said, "it just works."

And btw I am very thankful for Android and all of our devs! It's great to see these phones are still unable years later and for now, not more hazardous waste in a landfill.

Been on glitched aokp 37 for about a week with no reboots and it runs just as fast as it did first flash

Dunno man. All I can say is I have been running Milestone 5 since it released a month or so ago. I use cache cleaner and also have about 40 apps. It hasn't slowed down a bit since I flashed it.

I guess it's possible you had a bad flash or bad partitioning or something. Also voltage and OC tweaks can actually hurt performance on certain SoC if they aren't particularly amenable to overclocking.

Oh well. No big, whatever works, right?

I understand what you mean. Maybe one day I'll give it another try. For now I'm soaking up speed my phone hasn't felt in a good while. I also understand the complexity of this new oc and have played with it through tons of possibilities. One thing I couldn't figure out was why my phone ran so hot on ics. Anything above 1170 and 117live oc my heat broke 44. On gb while charging and using the phone for stress tests I can't break 43 @1400 with 233 gpu. I've always heard some roms can make your phone run hot, but have never experienced it until ics. Amyway, thanks for your thoughts.

if it takes 20 seconds for a app to load imo the sd card my have issues. im using a class 10 and apps open instantly on aokp 37. fyi i dont use any overclock most of the time as it seems to introduce hot boots with certain apps. for voltage i pull -50uv across the board and disable the 100mhz step. everything runs rock solid and is fast like cm7. I really like cm7 aswell, but to say ICS is not ready is absurd. the folks who are making complaints about ICS roms such as AOKP, simply are not doing something right.

It could conceivably take 20 seconds from a class 2 SD card. With how cheap SD cards are nowadays it makes little sense to still be running a card that slow. Class 6 is probably the minimum I'd buy for the fascinate.

also by comparing it to a computer, yes it is expected that it would be slow after some use. windows has to be reinstalled after a while, all those commercials that try and sell you fake antivirus programs or "SpeedMyPC" or whatever BS are there because computers eventually slow down. it's what happens.

Don't forget about the V6 Supercharger script guys. On gingerbread it's as easy as just running the script, no modifying services.jar. I've found that option 7 has the best performance as far as memory management goes for our phone, it completely silences lag and has options to flush caches and stuff, give it a shot and I can almost guarantee your lag problems will go away. I use it for every ROM and since you can customize your minfree values and launcher priority, it allows solid speed for any situation.

I can't get past the blue guy on the skateboard...

When I 3-finger into CWM Blue Recovery, it says:

"E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/command"
"E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/log"
"E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log"
"E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log"
"E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log"

Tried wiping cache partition and dalvik cache, and the "fix permissions" option.

It's probably also worth mentioning that I get an error about not being able to mount /sd-ext/ and not being able to format the cache partition.

Running the CM7 kernel fwiw...

Thinking about taking this opportunity to flash CM9.

Anyone have issues with the latest stable(7.2.0) or nightlies? I just rooted my GF's fascinate and got her set up with the latest cm7 stable but she's having these problems...

-Some weird data issues. Sometimes mobile data doesn't work, sometimes wifi data doesn't work.

-Gallery won't load anything. Just sits there empty.

-Her flashlight app would only keep the cam light on for a few seconds then it shuts off. The problem appears to be intermittent.

Is any of this stuff known to be an issue, and if so, was any of it fixed in the later nightlies? I'm wondering if I should try the latest nightly or just give up and go back to stock. Unlike me she needs her phone to work at all times and can't have the same expectations we would with hacking our phones(issues, bugs, sleep-deaths, etc). The stock software was bulky and slow so I was doing this to help her out but so far it's been more headaches than it's worth, nothing like my Captivate which runs like clockwork on the latest CM9 stable while awaiting CM10.

Try geewiz, stock-ish with tweaks. There's still minor problem though.

    This thread is reserved for nightly builds of CyanogenMod Rom for Samsung Fascinate.

    All Samsung Roms run on top of BML/RFS, CyanogenMod 7 does NOT.

    It runs on MTD/yaffs2 (like Nexus One) which means you'll not able to flash just any kernel or run just any other filesystem you want. Use it as it is if possible, otherwise confirm with the kernel developer that you are trying to install whether it would work with CM. We do not support other kernels and know nothing about their capabilities or compatibility. Only the data partition, which is on movinand, is ext4 like on speedmod or voodoo ("lagfix"). No "lagfix" is necessary because this does not use any Samsung proprietary file systems.

    CyanogenMod is a free, community built distribution of Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread) which greatly extends the capabilities of your phone.

    What are Nightly builds? Auto compiled build of the latest CyanogenMod source from github. This version changes each night and aren't officially supported.
    If you find bugs/issues you can/must discuss here (do not submit nightlies bugs on CyanogenMod issue tracker).

    Warning : Not for new users, flash this build only if you know what you are doing!!! Make SURE you can get into Download mode using only buttons (no other method, Download mode from just buttons is essential).

    INSTRUCTIONS:

    Latest version: http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=fascinatemtd (for when nightlies are working normally)
    Check the md5sum if you want to be sure that the download worked (different OSes have different programs that do md5, on ubuntu it is md5sum that you run against the zip you download and compare to the md5sum number shown on the download website). ROMManager does this automatically for ROMs you download via ROMManager.

    - First time flashing CM 7 to your Fascinate (or coming from another ROM)?

    1. Start with a rooted device (do not ask us how to do this).
    2. Flash ClockworkMod Recovery attached to this post.
    3. Download and push the ROM zip file to the sdcard.
    4. Reboot into recovery.
    5. Do a Nandroid Backup!
    6. Wipe Data! Seriously! Do it!
    7. Install the ROM zip from sdcard
    8. Install gapps package linked below.


    - Upgrading from earlier CM7?

    ROM Manager method:
    1. Install ROMManager Premium.
    2. Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. Pick Fascinate (MTD). Then pick ClockwordMod 3.x.
    3. Choose Download ROMs.
    4. Pick the CyanogenMod Nightlies.
    5. Check the Google Apps addon.
    6. Check Backup current ROM!
    7. Check wipe cache, dalvik cache.
    8. Let ROMManager finish the installation.

    NOTE: Nightlies are NOT currently available from Rom Manager, but should be soon. Every time someone asks "when?" it makes the demons break the build-bot adding several more chunks of time you will have to wait. Nothing pisses off the demon's like stupid f*cking ETA questions.

    Clockwork Mod method:

    1. Download and push the ROM zip file to the sdcard.
    2. Reboot into recovery.
    3. Do a Nandroid Backup!
    4. Install the ROM zip from sdcard (your Google apps will be backed up automatically)

    There are no Google Apps bundled with CM ROMs, because Google asked Cyanogen to remove copyrighted apps. After flashing the rom, don't forget to flash Google Addon package if you want it. ROM Manager will allow you to flash it if you just go into it and after flashing the ClockworkMod recovery for Fascinate (MTD), choose Download ROMs, and pick Google Apps. Or download and push the gapps zip for CM7 from http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Latest_Version#Google_Apps to the sdcard and flash it via ClockworkMod recovery.

    - Going to another ROM from CM7?

    You must flash a full Odin package with PIT, and make sure to check "repartition". This will convert your filesystems back to BML/RFS. You will now need to re-root your device, install recovery, etc to flash other ROMs. Do not ask here how to do this.

    At this time (07/28) there are a few changes of mine that have not yet been merged into the main CyanogenMod codebase. This mainly includes fixes for MMS. As such MMS will not currently work on the nightly builds until the change is approved and merged. Also, the 2.3.5 merge inadvertently removed the fix for signal strength display, so signal bars will also show 0 for now. These issues should be resolved soon enough.

    Also, any bugs pertaining to my original builds (low in-call volume, etc) are not going to magically be fixed just because nightly builds are being done. ALL NIGHTLY BUILDS MEANS IS YOU GET A NEW BUILD EVERY NIGHT. No hardware specific issues are magically fixed by this. Also, I am not planning on messing with any volume related issues until we have GB kernel source code. DON'T ASK. I CANNOT POSSIBLY EXPRESS HOW ANNOYING IT IS TO SEE IT ASKED EVERY OTHER POST.

    Also, only kernels built from the official source tree will be included in these builds. Only minor differences because of this, such as BLN and dock audio will not function. I plan on making some custom kernels with these features and other changes soon.
