I just got 2 refurbs and neither of them will connect to 4g on my sim (verizon). 3g works fine.

they both updated to vrbmf1 and keep oscillating between 2,4,8 asu while my gnex right next to it is at 43asu.

tried all combinations of settings in mobile networks (mode, apn, roaming, blah). the same sim in the nexus is no problem. tried a different sim, same thing. any idea what incredibly simple thing i am missing here?

Ensure this is set correctly.. Settings > Wireless and Networks > More > Mobile Networks > Data Enabled is checked. Network Mode: LTE/CDMA/EVDO. System Select: Automatic. CDMA Subscription: RUIM/Sim.. Other than that, You perhaps have bad hardware, a bad sim card, or sit in a very fringe 4G area. Perhaps try flashing a different modem or contacting verizon to see how strong your 4G area is and what your options are.

Note: This is AOSP, so some digging may be needed if on Stock/Touchwiz.

tried stock/aosp with multiple basebands on both. On the nexus i get -68dbm with either sim and 20+mbps on 4g consistently. my house never downgrades to 3g at all. its in the middle of a 4g area. on aosp i checked to make sure the option was ruim/sim.

one theory is that the sims are really worn out on the contacts and the gnex just has a springier reader that connects better or they are somehow cached on the nexus - does that make any sense.

i can understand 1 of the units being bad, but 2 of them with the exact same bad behavior.... super unlikely.

I would take it into Verizon and have them troubleshoot the sim.. Perhaps you could even contact tech support and get an S4 out of the deal for the hassle.. Worth a shot.

would an extended battery cause this? they never gave me a battery so i just got the laza zcell extended from amazon.

going to take everything to the verizon store and have them replace sims and see what happens. i'd love to get an s4, but i dont want to lose unlimited data so will try to avoid and upgrade.

tested with a friends stock battery, no luck.

I used this tool https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cc.signalinfo to check the signal status. when i pop my sim in, all the lte related fields go to n/a. when i remove the sim and boot the phone i see numbers there.

looking like bad sims.... flabbergasted that both sims are bad for the s3 but good enough for the nexus.
