The thing that has made Android so great to date is the aftermarket community, not Google. Release the supposedly half baked source code, and Team Douche will have it fixed far faster, and better, than Google could or would. If it wasn't for JesusFreke, thedude, and Cyanogen, my G1 would still be stuck on 1.5 or whatever it came with. It grew to be so much better as a direct result of aficianados, not Google. A Xoom running a custom ROM would be so much better to show off the hardware than what the official release can do.
My plans for getting a Xoom are like the source code-on hold for now. I don't think Moto realizes this is not helping sell tablets. Until it can be loaded with a custom ROM, I simply don't want one. If I wanted a tablet that could only run the official ROM I'd buy an iPad.

You do know that if you were stuck on android 1.5 it would have been the manufacturers fault because every manufacturer has to slap on their own stupid skin like Motoblur, Samsung Touchwiz, HTC Sense which cause the long delay in users getting the latest releases. Samsung is the worst with providing timely updates to their phone users (ex: Galaxy S series).

Don't blame google for that when it is the manufacturers that are taking away the pure google android experience and loading it with bloat and crapware.

Just look at the galaxy tab 10.1. I was impressed with the hardware until samsung announced they were putting that crappy Touchwiz UX UI layer on top of stock honeycomb UI.

What exactly is the custom rom going to do for ya? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

I don't see the HC source-code delay as the end of the world as some here do- but at the same time I don't think I've ever seen as untrue a statement on XDA as yours.

I'm running at 1.5G, have host-mode USB and will soon get updated WiFi, all because the kernel source is available. Having the OS available for rebuild opens up even more possibilities.

I Believe that you don`t have a Samsung Galaxy S Phone....

Custom roms gave me:
- Lag Fix
- Three time more battery time
- Increased Speed
- Better home program

I could go on and on telling each of the new features, but I can resume it:

Custom rom gave a new and better phone. A Galaxy S working as it should!

Kernel != ROM. I don't disagree that having the open source gives us something, but it's not the end all be all like the guy I quoted thinks it is.

The reason that custom roms are needed is because either the features that said custom roms give are not available (like the captivate), or the performance is not up to spec.

I would say at this point, we don't even know what the hell we want from the tablet, let alone what we would add to it.

I had a captivate. You are talking about custom kernels, which already exist.

Still waiting for a reason.

We have OC, we don't need a lag fix because we don't have the retarded RFS filesystem. The home program(I assume you mean launcher) can already be replaced.
