I know this is off topic, but there isn't a lot of traffic here anymore and most of the og pixel XL users here are probably in this discussion.... Do you guys have issues with your autorotation and auto brightness on the pixel XL?

I love the pixel XL I bought except for these 2 issues. It can't figure out the screen brightness or the autorotation. Stock room, not rooted. I went back to the OnePlus 5 for dual Sims and the second OnePlus 5 I got was just like the first one I killed in saltwater. Perfect Auto rotate and auto brightness. The pixel has slightly better camera, smoothness and was better about updates (OnePlus 5 is still on pie until spring of 2020). But overall I like the OnePlus better (for a few reasons but the biggest is the auto rotate and auto brightness or only semi functional on my pixel XL. Maybe it's just my unit?
I never use auto brightness and when I want my Pixel XL to rotate which is rare, it does it.. However I neeeevvveerrrr use stock and always have root aaaand if I had a OnePlus 5 I would most definitely be using an updated AOSP rom. The support on AOSP roms for the Op5 blows away the Og Pixel nowadays. While the cam is better I regret buying my XL and wish I would have either a) waited and got a Pixel 2 XL like I had been searching for a good deal on or b) Bought a OnePlus 5t. You can't beat the choices of custom roms and kernels for OnePlus. There are about as many choices as a Xiaomi device has nowadays. I always kind of looked at Pixel as Nexus was but that's not even close. Back in the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus S days we had forums that were alive 24/7 with tons of kernels, themes and roms and every mod you can imagine. Google messed up and should have made a Nexus type device along with their Pixel models from the start. They should have done their 3a type models with a more expensive Google Pixel. They lost many people making Pixel and discontinuing their Nexus line like they did. That's the way I see it anyway.
If you're not a fan of root, I'd have that cheeseburger/Op5 on a custom rom and a modded Google camera and a kernel. ;) Wish I would have went with the Op5t or 2XL. However I am still liking my Marlin even though much of the development has slowed due to people moving to newer devices....

I get what you're saying, I had almost all the Nexus phones back in the day. But the OnePlus 5 made it so I could use the phone out of the box as it is.

So I got out of rooting because I did it to make my phone work good, which the OnePlus did out of the box.

Now I'd rather buy a phone that works as intended if it's new enough. Once it gets old i would like to be able to root and install a custom rom which is why I stick to near stock Android phones. My old HTC one m8 was good for that back in the day but now the support is gone because I need an RUU for the Canadian Telus version of he phone. All the download links are deadv so it's basically a paperweight.

I hear you. I too had all Nexus devices except the 4 because I was on Sprint at the time and they didn't have it. I first got into rooting back when the epic 4g touch aka: Galaxy S2 came out (Sprints S2) and it was so I could achieve better battery life which back then was an issue. Now Android is great on battery but along the way I fell head over heals in love with roms that have LOTS of customization and themes... (substratum) Now when I use anything that doesn't have settings and options like Evolution X, RR, HAVOC or something as customizable as those it's just not enough for me. [emoji848] Lately I've been using Evolution X and it's been a awesome! I think we killed it here with the off topic chat. I better chill. LMAO.

Edit added:
But the only solution to the no more updates deal is to either use a custom rom (with or without root) or upgrade.

Does being on Custom Rom still offer unlimited original quality Google Photo Storage for this phone. I'm keeping this phone due to this reason only, having unlimited original quality upload. Thinking of buying a new phone but somehow having it so photos get uploaded from my Pixel XL. Bit of a task I guess but well worth it imo.
Yes that is linked to your google account and being a "Pixel XL" You are covered.

Anyway Yes no more security updates but this device is still plenty powerful. I switched to Lineage Os 16 using trebuchet launcher and it runs fantastic but the cool part is the trebuchet launcher runs the google search as smooth & fast as Pixel launcher. Most launchers run googles app flat out awful. Not trebuchet, its android bliss. Kirisakura 8.20 kernal and Lineage OS 16 is too good.

I wonder if Original Quality backups will still work if our Pixel XL gets a custom ROM with the next version of Android.

Apart from slightly faster battery drain, my phone is still working fine (rooted with Magisk).

One thing I do want is dual sim, hopefully Google does this moving forward. e-sim adoption rate is too slow at the moment.

Dual SIM is why I went back to the OnePlus 5 from my pixel XL. If it wasn't for that feature I could take either phone. The OnePlus 5 gets the slight edge for me but both have their strong points.

From now on I am going to always have a dual SIM phone since my promotion and needing to have a separate work phone with me all day.

I carry two phones. My Mi A1 is doing me great. On Evolution X Android 10 Rom.

Looks like one last update in December that will include Nov and Dec security patches. Probably do the same as you and replace or maybe flash a custom ROM not sure. Pixel 3a XL looks tempting.
Anyone seen the December update yet? It's apparently been issued but I haven't seen it as of 12/9. This is the last one for us.

December update was released on the scheduled date. Not sure whether you mean OTA update or not, of which I don't care about. Flashed manually.

The update doesn't include any December patch by the way, in fact even November patch is missing from it. It remains on the October patch, just said to fixed some minor bugs or whatever.

Ok. I thought the December update was going to include the November and December security patches. Oh well.
