Okay, so I've finished Someone0's directions, but when I try to log in to the play store, I get "Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server". However, I'm able to go out to the Internet using the browser.

Here's an interesting turn of events: when I open the browser, it goes to the UK version of google, though I'm in the U.S. Could Someone0's play store download or google framework or something be for the U.K., and not work for us in the U.S.?

Thanks!
It does work fine in the US. Which method did you use? The first one in his OP, or the second one? If the first one, try updating with skyhawk21's updated framework and login apks a few posts back.

I used the instructions for Google Play in the original post, usually the OP updates the original post to ensure they're up to date.

I ran leapinar's updated ICS files, and now it's working!

Someone0, you might want to update your original post to include 2 things that stumped me:

1) you might want to add that you need to do "adb shell" and "su" between step 6 and 7 in the first block of instructions
2) you might want to incorporate leapinar's fixed google services and such in your first block of instructions. Or just add that you have to do his gapps fix.

Thanks everybody!

Thanks for pointing out the misstep. I already intend to incorporate leapinar version on the guide, but I am little busy right now with no PC. Little changes can be done on phone as I'm doing right now. I already asked leapinar for permission and there is also some otherthing I need to give as warning along with a tool for it too. Just stay tune.

when I tried to do "mv /data/su/Vending.apk /system/app/Vending.apk"
I got a cross-device link error msg.

anyone knows a solution?
I think I have seen that error message b4. And I believe you maybe using verygreen version of root. Well, the reason is that the mv command you are using is based on the nook included modified version of busybox, I believe it's at /system/bin/toolbox. My version of root does include a more completed version of busybox and put it at the path b4 the nook embeded one. If you get into nook shell and type "echo $PATH" then you can see that out PATH is set to "/sbin:/vendor/bin:/system/sbin:/system/bin:/system/xbin" Since, my version of root put all the busybox at /system/sbin which is b4 /system/bin, which is where Nook busybox took place, my version of busybox sub-command mv is not generating that error. Your solution is to use verygreen version of busybox, say "/data/su/busybox mv /data/su/Vending.apk /system/app/Vending.apk" then it should be fine. That if his busybox is at /data/su/

Skyhawk,

I tried your most recent method of adding Google PlayStore. On all the apps you listed to go into apps and stop them, etc. most of them I did not have installed. Since PlayStore didn't work from the start, I had deleted it, but re-installed after rebooting once completing your instructions. PlayStore installed, I was able to sign in and afterwards it just shutdown. When I opened it again several times the same thing happened. Can you give me some guidance on this? I did use Someone0's root method. Thanks.

Alright guys if you want to skip the installing gapps part via "someone0"'s more complex method to get google apps to sync correctly, I have a way to make it work via a more easier way to do this!

Ok, I understand. So. let me be honest, I don't understand your instructions for installing Google Store. What does all that mean from Step 7 thru 19. I have no idea what you are saying to do. I can't figure it out. :(

Additionally, when placing files in areas where the files are hidden how is that possible? I assume you are installing them from a PC to the HD. If so, for me those files are hidden and I was unable to find them when trying to copy the files to the location you indicated. The only way to get to them is if I browse the HD, but I can't see them if doing the same from a PC. Or possibly I am not understanding the term "push" regarding uploading the 3 files to /data/su/ using "adb push" command. Is that like sideloading them to that location?

I am aware now that I misread Skywalk's instruction because in order to use it, you first have to have Google Store installed. Is there an easier method than what's provided for those of us that don't understand themore involved steps?

Thanks for the help

I say try forcing a full factory reset and start over if you not sure. I made a little tool that help you do that, here.

ADB Shell is telling ADB to open a command prompt to the device connected via ADB, click for more info about ADB

steps 8 - 17 are all *nix commands, which are all easily googled if you want to know more about what each of them do

Please read the first post again, I keep up date them as more information come out. leapinlar said that the first set of instructions is not necessary if you are going for 2nd set. If you happen to be more comfortable w/ 2nd set of instructions then go for it.

I'm not sure what you means by hidden. All the file that need to be upload to Nook are provided in the first post. There are from various place to download. Once you get them, you basically save them to the location that you are going to perform those instruction. Say, save them to C:\NookHD. Then when you get to command prompt, you type in "cd \NookHD" to get there first and then start the instruction. I understand that the instruction isn't an exactly the type of hand holding instructions. But then again, this isn't a place for it if you looking to hack your tablet. I mean, If you truly looking for a real Android tablet instead of saving a few hundred bucks, then maybe you should go for Nexus 10. Anyone looking to hack their e-reader/tablet devices, whether that be Nook or Kindle should already know gonna have to get their hand dirty on this.

basically, everything that involve here after gaining root are few simple things.
1. moving files from PC to nook using "adb push" command.
2. move the file around inside the nook using "mv" command, and sometime we need to do it as root.
3. set proper permission using "chmod" or "chown" command.
4. linking file, think of it kinda like making shortcut, even though they are truely different.
Those are basically what all we do here to make it happen, nothing more. Seriously there are much more steps if you are looking to do it manually. We just happened to make a script for them already. Otherwise you would be looking at 50-100 lines of steps to do.

Ok, I will give it another try. I must have misunderstood. This helps. I appreciate the info. :)

Someone0's wisdom: "I understand that the instruction isn't an exactly the type of hand holding instructions. But then again, this isn't a place for it if you looking to hack your tablet. You know, Someone, us techies are divided into three groups: those that are true techies, non-techies and then there are the wannabes. I'm a wannabe that knows enough to be dangerous or maybe not to dangerous! :) However, as a wannabe, I sure appreciate you geeks. You guys are the greatest and you show much patience with us non-geek/gurus. :) So, I appreciate you, your thoughts ;) and most importantly your time and effort. :) Besides, I like my Nook, I don't think I could buy a different tablet other than a Nook.

Ok, talk to you soon. . . :) Again, thanks for the info. I appreciate it.

Someone,

I see where you've already updated the instructions! Oh, man. I think I love you! ;) This is good. Talk later.

I have no problem w/ wannabe as long as they are learning. If people just want free stuff I'm sure there are other place that give you free stuff regardless of legalities issue or stuff that just plain ripping other people off and not giving proper credit. I believe people are here and communicating truely want to learn. That's why when I put out the instruction for rooting and gapps I didn't just give you just that, but what I have discovered as well. This way people know what's going on and it would be both useful and insightful.

Someone,

I did it! Thank you soooo much! I appreciate the extra "hand holding" it did the trick. Those were some really good instructions. I guess the first batch were a bit overwhelming for this wannabe. ;) Unbelievable! I did it! :)

I'm curious if anyone has Google Voice and Talk working, and whether you're able to do VoIP. I'm seriously tempted to snag an HD+ at Target today. Voice isn't a dealbreaker, as long as I can get Perfect Viewer working for my CBR/Zs.

I want voice to work, but it crashes. It is the last piece of software I want to run. Maybe I just have to wait for verygreen and CM10. Talk works.

After actually following up on my thread search  it looks like Skyhawk had it working w/ Groove IP:

Also wanted to let everyone know the newest version of Groove IP Lite works great, logins to google, and the built in microphone at top of NOOK HD picks up voices and audio great, you can call people for free with a google voice number and have them call you and ring the NOOK HD of course if you set up the google voice a specific way! Also to listen to callers on speaker, u gotta in call enable speakerphone and or use a bluetooth headset!

Perfect Viewer should work, I installed it via Google Play.
And I don't very care about VoIP app on my Nook HD Plus, since it has no camera. That's what I have my Galaxy Note II for.
