Here's my story:

Rooted, running CM11 no problems. Read some comics, decided to download and try out Dragon Age from the play store. I had ~35% battery remaining (hard to tell exactly, circular battery mod). After the game downloaded from the store, I opened the app and it began to download the larger files the game requires. I sat the Nook down while it was downloading and eventually the screen turned off/timed out. I tapped the power button to see where the download was and it would not turn on.

So, as of now, pushing the buttons in any combination for any amount of time does nothing. Plugging the tablet into the wall gives me a green light only (never orange). Holding the power button (and any button in combo) for ~10 seconds kills the green light. Pressing the button again lights the green light. I've left the tablet on the charger for over eight hours, two different times now, no change.

Plugging the tablet into the PC acts the same as above, however the PC also repeatedly gives USB device connect/disconnect warnings (sounds) for a bit.

WTF, any advice?
Light will only be on when screen is on.

Light will initially be green at power off with power applied then turn to orange if needing charge.

The repeated usb connects/disconnects though makes it sound like a bad cable as that is one thing bad usb cables do or a loose cable at one or both sides. Suppose it could be rebooting as well. That still doesn't say why its not showing anything on the device.

Maybe these things get confused when coupled with bad power paths. Maybe its barely charging but since it was plugged in long enough to be fully charged it shows green fully charged when actually it doesn't even have enough charge to do anything. There could be variation based on how bad the path is.

Just a theory based on the posts as well as my experience with a bad/loose kindle cable which somewhat mirrors these posts. It had green light but not fully charged and repeated usb disconnects/connects.

Fixed it! So, somehow internal emmc was corrupted while installing Dragon Age. One of my initial troubleshooting steps was to boot cwm from sdcard. Well, tonight something about that was nagging me so I revisited my steps. Turns out that I failed to set the card's partition as active.

Reformatted the card tonight, set partition active, copied files and voilà! Orange charging light and charging icon on the screen!

How I solved the charging problem

I had similar symptoms with my Nook HD+ : when plugged into charger the indicator light turned green, then orange, but only for a second, then went dark. When left on charger for many hours, the indicator would start blinking red. Nothing worked, until I read technical details in this thread.

The bottom line: if the battery voltage drops below 1.8 V, the stupid control chip assumes the battery is "bad" and refuses to pass the charging current; consistent with the observed symptoms. This gave me an idea on how to fix this:

Step 1: Open the Nook by prying the front panel to get access to mounting screws, then unscrew the back panel.
Step 2: Locate the battery cable composed of three red, three black, one blue, and one yellow wires.
Step 3: Locate the gold test points on circuit board _under_ the wires: "VBAT" under the red wires, "BAT-" under the black wires.
Step 4: You have to trick the control chip into "thinking" that the battery is still "good". For this, you'll need an external voltage source. I used my homemade adjustable DC power supply setting it to 2.5 V. I guess, any voltage between 1.8 - 3.7 should work.
Step 5: Connect the _positive_ lead from the external power source to the "VBAT" test point, connect _negative_ (or ground) lead to the "BAT-" test point.
Step 6: Plug your Nook into charger and wait a few seconds: the indicator light will now stay solid orange meaning the charging current is passing through. Yay! You should disconnect the external DC source; it's no longer needed.

I HAVE THE FIX!!
Ok here is what i did and replicated it more then once. Step one. Get a fast charge charger. Plug in nook cable. As you plug it into the nook now keep pressing the power button repeatedly never stop pressing until light stays orange. While pressing power keep unplugging and plugging in the power cord from the nook itself. It's worked every time. Let me know if this helps anyone.

My nook hd is completely dead ,I plug it in life turns free, then to orange then shuts off ,need help
Plug the nook into a laptop or computer. keep pressing the power button in pulses until it gets enough of a charge to begin slow charging. Once the charging lamp turns amber and stays on, let it charge there overnight. Don't try plugging it into the wall as you'll likely get the green lamp instead.

I recommend this article: https://nookhdplusandroid7.wordpress.com/

Details how to upgrade a Nook HD or HD+ to Android 7.1. After it is upgraded you'll notice an app called USB Host. All it does is switch the host on or off. So all i ever have to do is plug my Nook in. I get a green light, not charging. I open the app, toggle the switch to on, then off, and boom. Amber charge lamp.

The nook isn't a powerful tablet, but the HD+ as a beautiful screen. Use a lighter launcher like Nova instead of a process heavy one like Google Now launcher or one of the 3D launchers and you'll love this tablet. streams nice only seems to have an issue with Yahoo Fantasy Baseball for me. It's a daily use tablet for me now.

Nook HD+ not charging / Worked ok with battery backup

I have the same problem, but with my Nook HD (not HD+). I used a different adapter at one point because I lost my Nook adapter. This may have caused the problem for me.
I had the same problem as well , after plugging in a charger - green light on for a few seconds, amber light on for a few seconds, then amber light off ( so not charging at this point). I tried several plug in chargers and none of them worked ( I lost the original charger ) . Then I tried my Intenso S10000 backup powerbank and it worked fine.
So, if none of your plug in chargers work its a good idea to try with a battery powerbank.

I had the same problem, I found the original power block that came with my nook HD and it worked. Weird.
Interesting I seem to have a similar issue, i've been using the same charger for years and i thought the charging cable had pulled loose and switched to an ipad charger last week today i found it flat and got the green orange pattern as reported. I eventually found plugged into my mac it stayed charging after about an hour and after having read this thread unplugged and it booted up.
To be fair this tablet is now around 9 years old but its fine as an alarm clock :)

So it seems to be reluctant to take a fast charge, aha when i switched to the USB charger the light stayed green and wasn't charging it is charging via my mac. so something weird maybe after 9 years the battery can't handle the fast charge.
it actually went from 5 to 4 % with a 10 watt charger attached. I guess i need a low power one.
