As I understood it you are not technically able to use a Note 4 or any other VOLTE compatible phone on an MVNO and have access to VOLTE/Advanced Calling features, but somehow my Note 4 is able to stay in 4G mode when making or receiving a phone call and I can still use the internet while on a call. I have another device (Note 5) on the same plan, but when making/receiving calls it goes into 1xRTT mode and I can't use data until the call is disconnected.

Does my Note 4 being rooted have anything to do with it? When I go into settings on each for Advanced Calling both have the options grayed out, but my Note 4 says upgrading in process, while the Note 5 says click to activate and it brings me to the Verizon activation page, but obviously I can't do anything there.

Side note, I notice on my Note 4 after a fresh reboot when I try to make a call, the call drops immediately, but always connects on the second try, the Note 5 always connects on the first try, so I'm guessing that has something to do with it. I like the dropped first call with the ability to talk and use data though, nice little tradeoff, but curious to know how I was able to pull that off, and if it's possible to get my Note 5 to do the same thing.

Thanks

EDIT: Just tried my Note 4 and the dropped call issue seems to be rectified, I now properly go into 1x mode when making a phone call...But my data still works while on the call, it is also 4G speed verified by a SpeedTest while on a call with Wifi disconnected. Tried on the Note 5 and no data whatsoever while on a call still.
