Hey guys. I recently bought a note 8 and fsctory reset it. I decided to test out the otg adatpor thay came with it as with my previous galaxy note edge. I was able to tranfer photos etc to and from my phone with a usb adaptor with pen drive nps.

Problem here is that how many times i connect the otg adaptor to my note 8 and try different memory card readers or flash drives. It does not detect anything at all.. even reset my phone with the adaptor still in and still nothing.. my phones charges fine with its cable and connects and reads fine on my laptop.

Heres the strange part. I try connect my portable dvd writer drive and it powers up with the otg adaptor. I then unplug the dvd writer and plug in my flash drives and memory card readers and everything works fine. But when i take out the otg adaptor and plug it back in again. It dosnt get detected again.. not unless i plug in the dvd writer.. its so weird its doing my head in. Is it my phone or what? I even bought another otg adaptor hoping maybe i just had a dogey adaptor, but no i have the same problem eith the new 1.

I want to be able to be on the go and be able to maybe use the benefits of charging another friends phone with mine or perhaps just transfer stuff. I dont want to carry this dvd drive with me lol.

I'm tempted to try another factory reset again but i have so much stuff on my phone i wanna leave this to last resort.
If anyone could shed some light on my situation i'd be well happy.

Yumi.

It does support it natively but the otg adapter that comes with it is finicky unless using samsung smart switch. Get a small little otg adapter like from anker. I use an anker one for my 2tb hdd. Now, some devices may say they are ntfs, but you may still have to format them using your android phone so that the file system is fully compatible.

Yeah i do know note 8 is native but but i dont own any type c devices to try it. i would assume the dongle out of the box would work with no problems.. Tbh at the time of buying another otg adaptor, i was actually tempted to buy another brand. I was in conflict of which to buy but i ended up buying the official samsung one. Now i wished i bought the other brand. Then again who knows if it would have worked or not anyway.
I did now upgrade smart switch because maybe it might have helped but sadly no. Even smart switch dosnt detect anything unless i pug in the dvd writer, then it will start showing any connected deviced..

Does no one have any tips if this is hardware or software problem?

Similar problem

Hi,

I also have a very similar problem. I used to connect my note 8 to the computer and otg adapter with usb stick and could transfer files without any issue, but suddenly I can't transfer files...only charge.
I tried a different cable, different adaptor (all original), usb debugging on, MTP selected.... and I even tried factory reset.

Could it be that my usb type c port is damaged?

Please advise.

Regards
Omar

I thought it wasn't detecting anything either but look at my screen shot on my previous post - it does sense that...

I finally got it working now. I factory restored my phone but it didn't help with anything so i felt i wasted my time as now i have to restore everything back onto my note 8.

But anyway how i got my note 8 to get otg working continuously even if i unplugged the otg adaptor unlike before it would stop working then i woupd have to plug in my portable dvd drive to keep waking the phone to work wben the otg adaptor was connected.
I basically activated the otg via the dvd drive then plugged in a sd card reader then restarted the phone while still attached. It still worked even if i took out the otg adaptor and plugged it back in.
I did 2 tests after this.
Reset phone with no otg adaptor connected. (WORKED)
powered off phone and back on no otg connected. (WORKED)

Honestly have no idea what was wrong with the phone and why the otg only ever activated when i plugged in my portable dvd drive and not my flash drives or connect to another phone to charge, but what i did seemed like it helped to reactivate the otg and get it working properly again.

Ok never mind. Its bsck to acting weird again. This time my dvd drive cant even wake up the otg.. it brings up the notification a device is connected but then says disconnected and keeps popping up this notification loop even when i unplug the otg adaptor. i give up.

Honestly dont know if its hardware or software.
Owell.. not the end of the world i guess.

Well seeing this thread seems like we are all on the same boat, it's funny that this was not happened before and just happen few months back, unfortunately I don't know which SW update that might caused this, hopefully someone find the fix for this issue

There is a problem with note 9 and OTG support.
If you have a micro-sd card inserted into the phone then OTG does not work.

Take out the micro-sd and OTG miraculously shows up in My files/ ES file explorer etc.

Although ES file explorer is able to detec both the micro sd and the OTG it will give out an error when trying to access the OTG.

This is clearly a software issue that Samsung should address.

Have you tried using the File Manager that comes preinstalled on your device?

Hi,
I'm surprised to read this because my note 8 SM N950FD supports both otg and reading from large drives. The apps I use are ES File Explorer, Xplore File Manager, Solid Explorer, and have used Mixed File Manager, Root Explorer and total commander too for this. Sometimes it will show incompatible file system for that plug the drive into a pc or laptop and repair the drive and after finihing use it on the phone I'm sure it will work.

Hop this helps. Ciao.

Same here. I have no issue using USB OTG or large external HDDs on my N950N either.

A 1 cent OTG fix!!!!

I know this thread is old but I've been dealing with this issue as well. Everything else works (charging, PC file transfer) except OTG. Tried everything listed in this thread and others (developer options, etc etc). I finally gave in and brought it to a repair center and the guy said he thought it might be debris packed into my USB port.

It's not that the pins were dirty (I've cleaned it with alcohol) but a little crud was actually deep inside the port, packed in every time I plug something in. He says he couldn't clean it himself because he risked damaging the pins but said I was free to try before paying 150 for replacement port.

Long story short, I just used a twisted paper clip and went HAM on that damn port (taking care not to touch the middle board where the thing is) but dragging the metal against the back of the "donut" area

Honestly there wasn't much in there but guess what. It worked. I'm guessing Samsung OTG is super sensitive to how deep the plug is depressed into the port (even if the pins otherwise connect)

So after hours of trying software stuff and almost paying $150 I fixed OTG with just 5 minutes and a paper clip.

Hope this helps anyone having similar issues!!!!!
