Thinking of upgrading to this from the ipad 2. Whats the average screen on time for this?

This is dependent on brightness level and network connection usage. For example, playing divx video via DLNA with full brightness and sound gives me about 4-5 hours, but reading book with lower brightness takes approximately 7% per hour.
Hmm how about general usage like surfing net using 3g? Apple says the iPad can keep up to ten hours of usage. Do they mean screen time? Wonder if the note 8 can keep.up to my iPad 2's standard..

I think I never tried to spend 8 hrs with browsing. 
But again, its depends on what you browsing. Pages with many animated adds and flash/html5 components will drain battery faster, while (for example) wiki gives you twice more time. And one more thing - remember Note 8 is new device and you may count with many improvements, so current battery life probably will increased in near future, by my experience with Samsung.

I don't think my Note 8 3G could ever achieve that.
With the screen set to average / bright and constantly browsing ordinary websites I believe 5 hours would be achievable, probably not much more.
Dimmed & on wifi is a different story...
