Nothing Phone 1
@Phon3nX
Reading through this thread (and other threads in this forum), I see a lot of users facing issues updating their devices, especially with root. Even I have faced issues with updating and I try different methods to fix it, but there is still no single method that works 100% of the time. Sometimes local update method works, sometimes sideloading with ADB, etc.

It would be great if you could create a guide for updating their devices with root, possibly with all the different methods and troubleshooting methods. I do not mean unlocking or rooting, but updating NP1 by keeping root access. Sure, there are a lot of individual posts on this topic spread across this forum, as threads and as comments in threads like these, but I think it would be better to have it in one of the reserved sections in the original guide thread.

Thank you and kudos for the great job you do here. :)

Unfortunatelly there no 100% method working, restore boot file (from Magisk or fastboot) working only if Boot Timestamp / Signature is the same asking by OTA Update/Hotfix... If it's not the same = Error 20
It's for this reason it's better to :
- Always create yourself Magisk Patched Boot from the Stock Boot
Like that, signature come from original boot file and your Magisk will create a Patched file for your device/configuration and above all when you will apply/install this Patched file, Magisk will backup the original Boot.

If you flash directly a new Magisk Boot file from a user or this topic without boot/patch yourself this file with the "flash" command you can encounter bootloop but above all your Magisk doesn't create a backup from the original boot because Magisk has never patched this boot.

In some case the only solution is clean flash to the last Full Firmware available (so 1.1.7) and from this proper base update firmware and patch. I do that for the first Beta 1.5, i can't install this Beta from 1.1.7 even after restore boot. From now update work easily from OTA/Hotfix by restoring boot image.

PS : Topic updated with NOS 1.1.8 & NOS 1.5.1 Beta Hotfix links

Thanks for the reply!
As I said in my post, I am fine with flashing, so even if something bad happens I can get my device back to working condition. Even if I lose root while updating, I can easily root it again. But I only posted this since first time root users may encounter some issues and they'll have to go through all the trouble of flashing everything from a bootlooping device. Maybe all of this will be solved if a working custom recovery is available. Till then, I guess we'll have to try whichever method works for our device.

Thanks for the wonderful work you do here. Much appreciated. :)(y)

I can't update to 1.5.1 hotfix, it gives me error 20, I've tried flashing the 1.5.1 stock boot.img, the 1.5.1 hotfix and the 1.5.0 too.

I have the same issue, can't do anything to get over this error.

You're rooted ? If yes restore images (boot) from Magisk and retry

If it doesn't work for you, or doesn't have "restore images" available in Magisk, you have only two possibilities :
1/ Clean flash (not just a Factory reset, storage must me erased) to the last Stable NOS firmware (so 1.1.7) > Update 1.5 > And update OTA, it will work perfectly with a proper base
2/ Simply wait a Full Firmware 1.5.X Beta (but not available for now), you will update without problem, Full firmware do not have the same signature restrictions than OTA update.

No, I did not root. I was not able to downgrade to 1.1.7 Stock , I have a custom rom now. What's proper way to flash the 1.1.7 stock over custom rom ? I appreciate any tips

English please but thanks for the heads up

    1.5.3 HOTFIX just released
I COULD NOT update and keep root. I did magisk ota installation but at reboot i was bootlooping.

So i did the update as stock with unlocked bootloader and at reboot i held vol down to boot into bootloader, booted NOT FLASHED, BOOTED the old 153 (not hotfix) magisk patched boot and did direct installation

Everything seems to be working fine, i'll let you know if i encounter any freeze.

I don't have a Nothing phone but I have some suggestions:
Did anyone try using latest bleeding-edge build of Magisk from: https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/actions ?
If it still has issues I suggest opening an issue on the repo to notify topjohnwu.
Downloading artifacts and installing the apk should be the right way to go, right? Because after installing apks from actions magisk manager app crashes.

In the afternoon i'll also try to logcat the device

EDIT: Magisk implements a signature check to block malicious clones, to move from official to action you should first install the debug apk found on magisk's main page, do direct install and then install the actions apks...

    15:26, im trying
Force ramdisk format to lz4_legacy for v4 #2878
Action, i'll let you know if i get any crash or what

    UPDATE
15:42 the device crashed with the latest action build
    2
Thank you for trying out the latest build. Can you open an issue on the repo reporting this crash problem?

Edit: someone already did so https://github.com/topjohnwu/Magisk/issues/6780
No problem, i really just want a stable phone experience.

Let's wait for updates and hope for the best.

    EDIT:
I've updated the first and second posts, please feel free to let me know if i've made any spelling mistake.

    LATEST NEWS
Both 1.5.3 and 1.5.3.hotfix versions of NOTHING OS are currently unstable if the device is rooted and booting a magisk patched boot img.
An issue has been opened on magisk github.
For now if you want root and a stable device stick to 1.5.2, do not update until the cause of freezes is found.

HEADS UP WHILE UPDATING TO A13
    STABLE ROAD TO NOS 1.5.2
    Prerequisites:
Global & EEA device with NOS 1.1.8
The OTA Update file from 1.1.8 to 1.5.2, the link is down below: Global and EEA are not unified.

Global users will have no problem performing the update with the necessary precautions.
An EEA user on 1.1.7 no hotfix can update to 1.1.8 no problem.
EEA users which have 1.1.7.hotfix installed won't be able to update to 1.1.8 thus blocking the stable update procedure.
They will need to follow the beta firmware updates road.

    BETA ROAD TO NOS 1.5.2
    Prerequisites:
    Global device with NOS 1.1.7
    OR
    EEA device with NOS 1.1.7.hotfix
The OTA Update file from 1.1.7(/hotfix) to 1.5.0, the link is down below.

Then from 1.5.0 to 1.5.2 perform all the needed beta updates

What are the regional variants of Nothing OS ?

Nothing offers two distinct regional variants of Nothing OS.
    • Intended for European countries is the "EEA" version, as it meets the requirements of the European Privacy Directive and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
    • The other version, the so-called "Global Version" is intended for Asian and Australian devices.
You can easily control the regional setting of your Phone(1) by going to your Shell terminal or Android emulator (e.g. Fuss) and executing the following command if on Nothing OS >= 1.5:
    Code:
    getprop ro.product.name

    If Nothing OS <1.5
    Code:
    getprop ro.product.system.name
    • These commands will return "SpacewarEEA" if the device is delivered with the European firmware.
    • For International models, the result should be "Spacewar" only.

    - FILES FOR NOTHING OS - (stock-boot, etc. )

    /!\ IT'S HIGHLY RECOMMANDED /!\
to always using fastboot "boot" command installation
instead directly "flash" a patched boot.img file to avoid any risk of brick

    Code:
    .\fastboot boot Magisk_Patched_XXX.img

By the way if Magisk patched boot file is good, device will boot temporary with root and install Magisk, you must simply install/apply root on the boot definitively :
    - Open Magisk > Install > Install Directly (Recommanded) > Reboot... Voila !

If the Magisk patched boot file don't boot, just do a hard reboot/shutdown by pressing ON/OFF button +5 seconds, device reboot directly with your stock boot without problems.

    @Phon3nX

Thanks for the tip! This did the trick, and I'm now happily re-rooted on 1.1.3 :) I was not even aware of the local system update wizard...

    Yes :
    1/ Flash Full ROM Update
2/ Reboot normally (no risk, no EDL/Brick possibility)
3/ Boot normally System/OS, no root
4/ Run Magisk > Patch new boot 1.1.3 (you can know extract/found boot.img) on this thread
5/ Take the Patched Magisk Boot
6/ Boot on Bootloader mode (Fastboot) > Flash Magisk Boot
I advise to always flash magisk on "safe" mode, i mean with the "boot command (not flash boot command):

    Code:
    .\fastboot boot magisk_patched-2XXXX_XXXXX.img

7/ Device will boot on System/OS with Magisk/Root granted just this time, and if not boot, just restart, old boot is always installed, more safe.
If device boot normally with the patched Boot, just go on magisk > install > install directly (recommanded) > apply
    and reboot, voila !
