Could this be why it won't let me update with that error 20?
If you try updating with magisk patched boot flashed you will get error 20

If you directly installed magisk, the procedure to do is open magisk, press uninstall and then restore stock images, DO NOT REBOOT, perform the ota update or the dialer update.

If you are doing the ota update from the settings notification wait until it ask to reboot, still do not reboot, open magisk, install it by selecting the ota option, after it finishes return to the settings update menu and restart from there.
When it boots up you are on new fw with patched boot.
Redo all the steps until you are at the version you want.

If you do the dialer update, BEWARE because the phone reboots on its own
Start the dialer update and keep an eye on the phone. When it powers off hold vol down to boot into bootloader and BOOT the magisk patched boot img of the new fw

So the phone has stock boot flashed but patched boot booted, you can perform a new update as soon as you boot it, because the phone has stock partitions on it.
With the dialer always remember vol down at boot and boot the new patched img.

Let us know how it goes.

I see. If I were to flash back the stock 1.1.7 boot image removing root, update from settings and not from offline OTA, boot in the new rom and THEN flash the magisk patched boot, would there be any problem? Is that an option?

You can do that but booting a stock rom on a device with unlocked bootaloder will trigger DRMs which are annoying to fix back.

And to some user, banking apps and netflix are pretty important on their phones.
If you flash stock then boot patched.

If at the time of installing magisk you DID NOT boot patched and directly installed magisk BUT you flashed patched, magisk will return an error when you try to restore to stock.

Boot into bootloader, flash the boot of the fw you have and boot patched, perform the update etc.

Is everything specified in the guide you linked? And by the way, yesterday I tried flashing the stock boot yesterday and phone was fine. Netflix and Wallet have never worked since day one, but I have all the modules needed that work perfectly on my Pixel 6A, but just in case, how could I restore DRMs?

No, that guide is for the fastboot rom, mine is for the zips

Oh right, that's easy. So, to wrap up, can you confirm that if I flash stock boot, update either from 1.1.8 onwards from settings or offline update 1.5 Beta 1 onwards, and THEN I flash the magisk boot like for 1.1.7, I should be fine risking no wipe? I'm not holding you accountable, don't worry. I just want to be 100% sure cause I'm at work tomorrow and I need a functioning phone. If it was weekend, I wouldn't care.

Boot into bootloader

Fastboot flash boot stock_boot_1.1.7hotfix.img (or how it's called)

Fastboot boot patched_1.1.7.hotfix.img

Now with the dialer method update to 1.5 beta 1, hol vol down

Fastboot boot patched_1.5.beta1.img

And you keep going with dialer and otas.

I'm dumb ; when i receive my brand new Nothing Phone i updated to the lastest version (1.5.3) i didn't see this topic before. Now root is not working.

There is a way to downgrade to 1.5.2 without any issue ? Or best option is to wait a fix ?

You can downgrade with the link i've previously sent in this conversation but you'll lose all your data

There is no global or EEA.

From the second Beta [1.5.1] EEA & Global firmwares are now unified!

That does not seem to be the case. I am on 1.5.2 EEA (Spacewar-T1.5-230213-2131-EEA).
Screenshot_20230329-055051~2.png

I think it only unified when flashing beta firmware.

@AnotherM1m maybe OP needs an update regarding this, but please double check first.

Can't confirm. I always reboot from the magisk interface after using OTA installation method. It doesn't make much sense, but I've had cases where using the settings update menu's reboot option somehow lead to magisk not being installed.

unified means, that both variants are in 1 Update/FW Package... so the Update is the same and installs the files according your device variant. Thats why you (as me) see EEA in the build number.

I've always restarted from magisk but from .3 to .3.hotfix i've encountered a bootloop so that's the reason im talking about restarting with the settings app.
But i can update the guide to alert people about this possibility.

That does not seem to be the case. I am on 1.5.2 EEA (Spacewar-T1.5-230213-2131-EEA).

Unified means the same zip can be used for both version of the phone to update the software.
For beta users the second beta was unified, for stable user 1.5.3 was the first unified update.

Two things: Download server is really slow on eu west, ota_diff_20230428_222944_20230428_201717.zip the rollback file could be 154 full, i'll look into it tomorrow

Update: it's a rollback zip to 154 from UpsideDownCake, i don't know which nos version is this beta.

Upsate2: This beta has no Nothing OS version set. The easter egg's still A13's. Android's version set to UpsideDownCake.

    Hello!

For everyone having problems updating with offline ota updater because of error 20, I've made a script that easily copies logs from the phone into the sdcard.

You need root to run this script.

The logs can be then copied here to find out why things are not working.

    Old News
Both 1.5.3 and 1.5.3.hotfix versions of NOTHING OS are currently unstable if the device is rooted and booting a magisk patched boot img.
An issue has been opened on magisk github.
For now if you want root and a stable device stick to 1.5.2, do not update until the cause of freezes is found.

HEADS UP WHILE UPDATING TO A13
    [STABLE] UPDATING TO NOS 1.5.2
    Prerequisites:
Global & EEA device with NOS 1.1.8
The OTA Update file from 1.1.8 to 1.5.2. The link is down below: Global and EEA are not unified.

Global users will have no problem performing the update with the necessary precautions.
An EEA user on 1.1.7 no hotfix should update to 1.1.8.
Updating to 1.1.7.hotfix will prevent you from updating to 1.1.8.
They will need to perform beta updates.

    [BETA] UPDATING TO NOS 1.5.2
    Prerequisites:
    Global device with NOS 1.1.7
    OR
    EEA device with NOS 1.1.7.hotfix
The OTA Update file from 1.1.7(/hotfix) to 1.5.0. The link is down below.

Then from 1.5.0 to 1.5.2 perform all the needed beta updates

    Yeas, I can patch boot.img.
Ok firstly boot the patched boot img

open a terminal emulator, and send the "su" command to gain root priviledges.

    now
    Code:
    cd /mnt/product/nt_log/ota_log/

You are now in the log folder for ota updates.
    Do
    Code:
    ls

To have a list of files in the folder.
The files are multiple tar.gz files for older ota attempt but there should be one folder (one value not ending with tar.gz) with a modern date

    Do
    Code:
    cd *name of the folder*
to open the folder, ls command should show you the structure of the folder and that there should be an ota.txt file

Now to copy that txt file to the root of the sdcard
    Code:
    cp ota.txt /sdcard/

Now on the root of the sdcard of the phone you should have the ota.txt log, send it to me privately through xda messages.

LATEST NEWS (dd/mm notation is used)

Nothing just published this blog post:

    nothing.tech/blogs/news/android-14-beta

It's really early in development, read carefully the post if you want to try Android 14 on Nothing Phone (1)
    Code:
error code -2: pre-build-incremental is different from ro.build.date.utc
This is what many people are reporting while trying to update to 1.5.3.HOTFIX or 1.5.4

Go to Settings, System, Date and Time, remove automatic time zone and set it manually to China, Shangai was the only option working for me.
Now reopen the offline updater and try starting the update once again

Don't forget to set automatic time zone again after you are done!
The cause of the instability of rooted system with 1.5.3(/hotfix) is the implementation of MGLRU, a new way to handle processes and memory while the phone is under pressure.
This module should fix the issue:

If you encounter freezes or crashes user @gwolfu made this module which script runs every 30s to force MGLRU to stay disabled:

NOTHING OS ZIP - DOWNLOAD OTA/FULL ZIP UPDATE FILES

Special thanks to HofaTheRipper,AVB Delenda Est & neilphetamine for shared their firmwares & boot files links !!

From BETA.2 onwards the update zips are unified meaning that the same zip can be used for both Global and EEA versions!

NOTHING OS IMG - DOWNLOAD BOOT IMAGES

    /!\ IT'S HIGHLY RECOMMANDED /!\
to always using fastboot "boot" command installation
instead directly "flash" a patched boot.img file to avoid any risk of brick

    Code:
    .\fastboot boot Magisk_Patched_XXX.img

By the way if Magisk patched boot file is good, device will boot temporary with root and install Magisk, you must simply install/apply root on the boot definitively :
    - Open Magisk > Install > Install Directly (Recommanded) > Reboot... Voila !

If the Magisk patched boot file don't boot, just do a hard reboot/shutdown by pressing ON/OFF button +5 seconds, device reboot directly with your stock boot without problems.

From 1.5.2 onwards Boot Images are unified meaning that the same img can be used for both Global and EEA versions!

What are the regional variants of Nothing OS ?

Nothing offers two distinct regional variants of Nothing OS.
    • Intended for European countries is the "EEA" version, as it meets the requirements of the European Privacy Directive and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
    • The other version, the so-called "Global Version" is intended for Asian and Australian devices.
You can easily control the regional setting of your Phone(1) by going to your Shell terminal or Android emulator (e.g. Fuss, Termux) and executing the following command if on Nothing OS >= 1.5:
    Code:
    getprop ro.product.name

    If Nothing OS <1.5
    Code:
    getprop ro.product.system.name
    • These commands will return "SpacewarEEA" if the device is delivered with the European firmware.
    • For International models, the result should be "Spacewar" only.

UPDATE: set the time zone to China, Shangai to use the offline updater
    7
    @Phon3nX
Reading through this thread (and other threads in this forum), I see a lot of users facing issues updating their devices, especially with root. Even I have faced issues with updating and I try different methods to fix it, but there is still no single method that works 100% of the time. Sometimes local update method works, sometimes sideloading with ADB, etc.

It would be great if you could create a guide for updating their devices with root, possibly with all the different methods and troubleshooting methods. I do not mean unlocking or rooting, but updating NP1 by keeping root access. Sure, there are a lot of individual posts on this topic spread across this forum, as threads and as comments in threads like these, but I think it would be better to have it in one of the reserved sections in the original guide thread.

Thank you and kudos for the great job you do here. :)
