I sent an e-mail over to the /e/ Foundation asking about it; I'm excited to get my NP2 but I would like a Google-less ROM to run on it. My understanding from the NP1, however, is that the Glyph app isn't just an app, there's an API that is a part of the ROM and thus was never available on AOSP ROMs for the NP1...so that's a tradeoff.

I'd also like to see TWRP or Orangefox come over; I'm sure they'll get here in due time.

...but really, what I think would be a boon for NP2 development, is if there was a means of developing a ROM for both phones at the same time. I hail from the OnePlus 8T, which had some cross platform development for the 8 Pro, 9T, and other phones in the same family.

Personally, I'm happy to fund some ROM development...if anyone is interested in some (modest) funding for their ROM project, DM me and I'll be happy to discuss.

Apparently paranoid Android would be happy to make one but they were not sent a device..have asked nothing but don't they'll even respond.

It's a great open device so should get some love I'd have thought..

The stock firmware is superb though I agree...

Different SOC though, the OnePlus 8 variants all had the 865 iirc.

Wouldn't work between a 7 series soc and a Gen 1..

Really silly we push devices to our friends / family at least I do.
This get them more sales duh :/
If they had open box devices or returns why not send them to devs.

Can we start a general fund for development or something?

Couldn't agree more, Devs should get devices so unless someone gets one it's not happening... Either someone in the team night an NP 1 or they were sent one.. not sure.

It took around 2 months for the first custom rom on NP1. I guess the NP2 will be a bit faster. But its still a niche product. Dont expect that much develeopement. I guess the NP1 is a good reference. Just take into account the P7Pro has like 3 custom roms and 3 kernels.
Actually P7P has over 20 roms and 5 kernels, but they are not on XDA...

The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro have over 20 ROMs and four kernels.

( Edit: I just noticed someone already mentioned this )

So, a few updates to be had on this topic...

1.) Kernel source is available. XDA covered it (https://www.xda-developers.com/nothing-phone-2-kernel-source-code/), and there's a Github repo with the kernel source (https://github.com/NothingOSS/android_kernel_msm-5.10_nothing_sm8475). Hopefully, this is a first(ish) step.

2.) I reached out to OrangeFox to discuss sponsoring a port; I'll reach out to TWRP later today to see if one of them is interested in porting a recovery environment for the NP2.

3.) I got a response back from Gael over at /e/OS:

Regarding the Nothing Phone, it's always a matter of priorities in term of potential business since we have to pay developers each month: porting to a new phone from scratch generally induces an investment between 15-30K€ (and each time we need to port to a new version of Android we need to invest again). That could probably be handled through a crowdfunding campaign if there are enough people interested, but for now we got very few requests for this new phone.

Gael isn't being unreasonable here; the NP2 doesn't have a request for an /e/OS port on their forums yet (https://community.e.foundation/c/e-devices/request-a-device/76), while the NP1 had less than a dozen echo responses (https://community.e.foundation/t/nothing-phone-1/45472/3), though its more limited release may have something to do with that.

On the downside, I can't seem to find *any* phone with a Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 that has a LineageOS port. It's unclear whether there are technical barriers or "only so many devs to go around", but to whatever extent it would grease the wheels to leverage an existing phone's AOSP port, there don't seem to be many of them. The OnePlus 10 Pro, Razr+, Oppo Find x5 Pro, and ROG 6 Pro don't have any developed ROMs at all (though some at least have recovery environments), and the Galaxy S22 Ultra only has one ROM I saw and it's for the Exynos variant rather than the Snapdragon.

I might try to reach out to Nothing directly and see if there's some miracle-level possibility that they'd be willing to do a bit more work on this front, but if there is so little available for this CPU, i'm thinking there may be more to it than the NP2 being a niche phone - the S22 Ultra certainly isn't.

Theres a Dev channel on telegram, have a look for it... New updates will be shown in the nothing updates channel as and when new breakthroughs are made, the dev channel is private but the others are visible, just search nothing..

Tbh once it happens you'll know on XDA anyway, it's a great device and it'll happen, thankfully we have close to stock android anyway and it runs beautifully, there's very little I would change.

Man I hope there is some custom love for this phone.
I was really hoping someone / group would chime in.
I don't use telegram so I can't see what is happening there.
Appreciate people keeping us posted on this.
So the 8+ Gen1 does have custom ROMs:
Poco F5 Pro / Redmi K60 - Motorola Edge 30 Ultra / Motorola Moto X30 Pro

Don't be concerned. It's just a matter of time.
This kind of development is not cheap if a port is not an option.

Do we even need twrp/orange fox recovery for custom roms? Some roms of the NP1 (Paranoid Android) used fastboot update to flash while others (Pixel Experience) made their own

Honestly no, the most useful reason to have a custom recovery is to perform a nand backup.. beyond that I suppose an agile way to flash ROMs although anyone who flashes a ROM whilst out and about is pretty much asking for problems.

For me, no not really, although it's definitely nice to have

I really hope development takes off with this phone..

I've been on the lookout for an upgrade for a long time, but nothing peeked my curiosity, it seems nowadays most devices, have their development stalled or you need to wait one or two years to get a few rooms...

What a shame 😔

Miss the old days of oneplus or nexus line. Where people would unlock, root & flash a new rom within the first weeks of getting their devices.

Also as complete as some may say about stock rom/ pure aosp experience.

Once you've grown used to all the features of something like derpfest/ricedroid/risingos...

It's really hard to go back.

Anyway, time will tell for this device.

Sorry if this is considered off-topic...

    Do we have any developers here willing to work on custom ROM development for Phone 2? {Mod edit. Oswald Boelcke, Senior Moderator}

Hello mate, long time no see.

Would you be interested in making a ROM on the NP2?

Paranoid Android is already in the works.

What do you think? @arter97 is working with nothing as they held back certain parts of the kernel iirc.
Would probably be willing to do so if I had a device.

Recently switched from OnePlus to Pixel devices and couldn't be happier, although I'm always down to try something new (as long as it isn't a Xiaomeme 🤣).

Evo X on the OnePlus 8 pro by @AnierinB best ROM I've ever used, it had everything.

Doubt they're making one on the NP2 but It'd be unreal to see it here.
    2
He said they were thinking on it but had nothing yet.
I was trying to get enough people to say they would so we could get it going.
Was sure we would have a alpha build of something at this point.
Well they don't have everything they need just yet, kernel isn't complete... Arter has advised on this himself.

The way I see it is we have 100% more ROMs than we ever had on the OnePlus 10 pro... So I'm happy with that..

PA is on its way too and if we can get anyone else onboard which will happen eventually then it may snowball into a mass ROM fest...I'm hoping anyway.
    2
PA was a nice rom used it on my nexus's (nexi?)
Lienage would be awesome as well. build myself some way back, mb could make a virtual instance again if LOS has the buildtree for linux.

but i'd use any rom not by Nothing. that half assed way to distribute roms and no real OSS sharing... guess what finger i am holding up

I understand what your saying I go back as far as Moto Droid X2.
Still have it and flashed with Eclipse ROM.
It extra suck for me I was pissed at Oneplus locking down everything.
I go F you and get this phone now they have Custom ROMs on OP 11 :/
*I would like to again say this stock is one of the best for sure.*
However something about custom just makes me happy :)
Yes including the fun of messing around with new things.
Well, if we're officially in the 'waxing nostalgic' part of the thread...like my sig says, I've been here since *before* Android was the OS that got modded ROMs...I've been around since the Windows Mobile days, when we didn't 'unlock the bootloader', we "HardSPL'd".

In the early days of Android ROMs, it was always interesting to see the total conversions that happened, and it was so easy to move between stuff - flash ClockworkMod recovery (or the short-lived, but epic 4EXT), download a ROM image to your SD, card, reboot, select, flash, done. No CLI, no bootloader unlocking drama, and for a while there were the Aroma Installers, which were basically Installshield Wizards for your ROM - it'd wipe (or not), take a Nandroid backup (or not), give a laundry list of the different bundled apps you could optionally install...it was a glorious time, and the ROMs themselves were incredibly unique and varied, and there was so many of them.

...now, it's a very different environment. I haven't seen an Aroma installer in years. I never understood whether it was good to have a ROM 'Deodexed' or 'Odexed', and aside from LineageOS itself, ROMs either have the Google stuff, or they don't.

I think there's far less incentive to mod than there used to be. Tethering used to be a big draw, but carriers actively allow it now in ways they didn't used to. AT&T used to prevent sideloading, but that ended years ago, too. Android went from 'plucky underdog' who was competing with WinMo and Blackberry, to "the mainstream alternative to Apple for people who like to customize stuff". Us XDA folk like having ground-up modded software, while the majority of end users are satisfied with icon packs and replacement launchers.

Where will XDA be in the next ten years? I don't know...but I'm grateful for every developer and modder and even the users that incentivize the modders and developers to mod and develop.

Okay, I'm done waxing nostalgic. I probably have some work e-mails to reply to now.

I was huge custom ROM fanboy in the past, I started with Galaxy Spica, and modded the hell out of it, and any other device I got after it. I used Nameless ROM on my previous device (OnePlus 8 pro) and it was the best ROM I ever used, but I gotta say Nothing OS is great experience so far. Just root it, install AOSPmods module and there you go, no need for custom rom for me, at least for now. I've ran through the phone(2) kernel sources, they are one of clearer OEM kernel sources I've seen, very easy to work with, I believe in few weeks well see at least few custom roms made.

Reading about Aroma installers and Clockwork recovery got me all nostalgic! 😍😍

On a side note tried aospmods with lsposed but none of the mods worked, I guess it isn't supported yet, as for pixelify all worked as expected including call screening which is a nice bonus 😉
