Same thing here. I'm contacting Google regarding the issue. I've noticed a similar symptom since I've been using an android watch:

my watch gets notifications on time but my phone doesn't react. When i clear the notifications from my watch, my phone sets off multiple notifications in a row. Example: text, text, email, email, email, email, email, text, calendar. It's very annoying.

Now my phone makes no notifications. I've changed all notification sounds to full volume, I turn off bluetooth completely and my phone only vibrates for calls and doesn't make notification sounds or turn on the display as they come in.

While connected to a bluetooth device, the notifications come through that device but nothing or vibrate only on my phone.

Unfortunately the problem has surfaced again. 27 hours after a reboot no more notification sounds. Any thoughts? I dread having to do a factory reset unless I know for sure it will fix the problem.

The situation for me has gone from bad to worse. Now the notification sounds stop working within hours of a reboot. Used to be after a few days now it's a matter of hours. Somebody please help.

This was happening to me through the first week of this month, I rebooted once since then and then got the January update and it has not reoccurred for me.

Same issue here with a first gen Pixel non-XL. I disabled bluetooth and uninstalled any apps I put on recently before rebooting, but same thing happened - worked fine for two days, then suddenly ringtones and text tones are silent. Other app notification noises (like email) are fine, though.

Is it carrier dependent? I'm on Google Fi

Have you tried running in safe mode? In safe mode it doesnt seem to trigger for me. Perhaps it is a specific app that we have in common.
I would have to run it in safe mode for days just to see if the problem happened and that is not practical. But, let's assume it is an app. I have over 100 apps.......how would you identify which app it is?

I posted this on another XDA thread but wanted to share it here also since I was just dealing with the same issue.

I have a Nexus 6P and my wife has a Pixel XL and we were both having the same issue with 8.1, no notification sound with text messages and call ring tone. I did most of the suggestions that I have found online (factory reset, clear cache/data in messaging app, change sound) but none of them worked. I was about to downgrade to 8.0 but I saw that both of the apps (messages and phone) were being "optimized". I disabled battery optimization on messages and phone, rebooted and so far it seems to have fixed it. My only guess is that they optimized those apps a little too much. Good luck.

I think my problem is different. When the notification sounds stop working they stop for all apps, not just text messages. My phone ringer, though, is not affected.

hopefully one of these will help:

1) go and wipe the app cache, and reset. also try wiping system cache and dalvik cache.

2) if your phone is rooted, try using the app pnf root.

best of luck.

Having the same issue. I think it is after I cast something to Google home but I have not confirmed that. It is incredibly annoying.
I think the problem may be related to making phone calls. I believe the sounds stop working after I get off of a long phone call. Any thoughts? See if that happens to yours.

Definitely related to making a phone call. I was just on the phone for 25 minutes I got off and notification sounds were no longer working
