So I have been wondering whether or not to keep my root and adw launcher out go back to stock. To recount my experience, following the OP instructions I flashed a spare SD card with CWM, and downloaded the beta folder files from the link in the OP.
Took a few tries for the SD card to recognize on boot, at first I thought I had messed something up... Finally booted into been cwm, followed the instructions without a hitch, save that YouTube wouldn't accept my login the first couple of times.
booted back into cwm, flashed second file and rebooted. Everything seemed to be working except that the market search was broken... Spent a couple of hours playing with the different settings checking out the options, when I started to notice a couple of bugs creeping in.
1. The system seemed to be getting a lot slower, just kind of lagging when going from one screen to another. Some apps really took a while to load. (even taking into account that the hardware really isn't super fast to begin with)
2. I had used the nook touch tools app to remap the settings button on the B&N quick launch bar to launch the nook color tools app for the more robust settings menus, and set the long press nook button as the Adw home. This worked just fine for about three hours, then suddenly, the icon for settings in the quick launch bar changed to the icon for nook color tools. At about the same time (although I don't know if it's connected) the shop button on the quick launch bar stopped working. When I would press the shop button, the screen would freeze for just a second and then
Flash and nothing would happen. The only way to get to the shop was to click the B&N hot 100 link, and then click the shop title to get to the main shop screen.
3. At this time I noticed that the search in the B&N store was unresponsive. Just like market search, it would sit there with a blank screen.
It was getting to be a little much so I restored back to stock with the stock recovery. (as much of a flashaholic as I am I didn't see the need yet to put cwm on the internal system)
Booted back into the stock B&N software, played around for a few minutes to make sure everything was working like it should... Then re did the root procedure from the OP, this time had no problems with YouTube or Gmail in between the zip file flashes... Booted back up into adw and started looking around. Shop button on the B&N quick launch bar still is not working, and the search in the shop only sometimes works.
At this point I am trying to decide if I just want to go back to stock and let it be. I have an OG EVO, An EPIC TOUCH 4g, and two nook colors, all of which are rooted, and have custom roms, so I can get my fill of Android cracking.
Reasons to keep root:
Apps... I don't have a lot that I would find useful, but there are a few. Box is great for transferring files I like to keep handy, having the kindle app would be fun and ironic... Perfect viewer is the app I use for pdf files, I like the extended settings and button remap abilities of nook touch and color tools apps... And software data cable is great for wireless file transfer... And last, Titanium Backup... Enabling me to upgrade button savior to pro as well as get my paid version of fancy widgets, etc.
Options... Let's face it... The extended settings of Nook Color Tools, and the button remap abilities of Nook Touch Tools are almost worth root by themselves.
Sideloading apps is a nice option to have even if you don't intend to use it. And the search market app did end up working for me btw.
However, I really plan on only using this to read books... I have plenty of other devices to hack. Other than a better pdf reader and the ability to read Amazon books, I don't know that I need the options root gives me on this device.
Anybody have any thoughts on the subject?
p.s. I noticed some posts talking about not being able to get back to the adw home without rebooting... When I re did my root process a second time I noticed that the Burton savior trigger was very small and hard to see. When I tried to click on it it didn't respond. I had to open button savior and choose a different theme before it would work. Maybe a glitch in the first run settings?
And big thanx to the whole XDA community... Between here and AndroidForums.com I haven't had a problem I couldn't get out of on any Android device yet!
Those who would trade Liberty for Security, will end up with neither.
