Curious if anyone is able to install Dropbox. When I try to search on the Nook it doesn't show up and using a laptop to try and install remotely I'm told it's not compatible with my device. I'm having the same problem with Aldiko. Is this expected and if so what is the workaround?

The nook runs a very old o.s. so, yes, this expected. You need to search the internet, this forum see the above post, and your old backups for working versions of many apps. Check the apps thread for a bunch of working apps with version numbers.

I rooted my Nook SimpleTouch Glowlight with this method over a year ago and it worked like a charme. :good:

But I have always experienced and issue where the Nook wouldn't awake from Standby (Screensaver image is shown).
Pushing neither the home button, nor the power button has any effect.

The only thing that works is hooking up to any form of power supply, wether it's a computer, wall charger or portable battery.
Upon connection the device restarts immediately.

Is there any update that I could apply to resolve this issue?
I don't want to make any mistake, as the device is already rooted and I surely want to avoid bricking it.

Thanks in advance. :fingers-crossed:

I installed glownooter-1-5-26 because glownooter-1-12-25 didnt boot after the first time.

glownooter-1-5-26 is Android Eclair 2.1, is it the same for 1-12-25? Is it possible to install newer versions?
or even cyanogenmod?

No one has broken the 2.1 barrier. There was a project to work up CM11 from SD boot, but it seems to have been abandoned.

thats a pretty harsh barrier,

is there a good place where I can find apps for SDK 7? this is like ancient

I guess if you're used to Jellybean and above it can seem impossible :) The NST was my first Android experience so I see its limitations a little differently (I now also have a CM 12 Nook Tablet, so I see both sides). I honestly don't get the whole CM 11 thing for the NST. I keep asking myself exactly what it is I would like to do with my NST that I can't do now with the apps I have. Maybe my horizon is too low, but once I had the audio up and working I had far surpassed anything I thought would ever be possible, so I'm content.

There are apps in the PlayStore which still run on the NSTG, but maybe you didn't install GApps and the Market. I've found some of my apps by Googling and adding "android 2.1" or "eclair" to the search string. You do have to be a little careful to make sure you're not getting trash (or worse).

Most of the apps worth having are text/reading based since the display is really not designed for animations or quick touches. There have been a number of threads in the forum where people have posted packages of apps that they have found reliable. I did that myself in one thread awhile back and I keep my post updated. That's another possibility.

Or, you can just ask in the App subsection of the forum (as I have done before) if anyone has found "x" and see if you get a response.

Wow thank you for this post, it helped me a lot.

I still have some questions if that is ok.

I cant setup the NoRefresh and ButtonSavior correctly.

The Refresh/Scroll effect looks really wierd and faded and how to I assign the hardware buttons with custom functions
like home/back/menu button

Also there were some Audio Apps in your folder? how is it possible to listen to audio on the NST?

And basiclly have all the apps I need except to important ones for me. Pocket and Wunderlist.
Ist there any possibility to get them running on the NST

thank you so much

I never got NoRefresh to work right--certainly not like all the YouTube videos that show it in use. There is a contrast (+/-) adjustment that displays initially when you fire it up (if you have the settings that way) but it always gave poor results for me. If you need that kind of thing you might look at FastMode (search in the NST forum here). It worked better for me but the display is sort of speckled and there is some ghosting. AFAIK both of these require special kernals (certainly FastMode does). You might check to see that you have the right kernal for your firmware version with NoRefresh. It does not work, for example, with the current kernal I am using that enables USB Audio, but FastMode does.

I'm not familiar with Button Savior except from a brief encounter in one of my first rooting efforts. If you just want to assign back/menu/home to hardware buttons then I think you want Nook Touch Mod Manager.

Also there were some Audio Apps in your folder? how is it possible to listen to audio on the NST?

This is done via USB Host mode. There is a very long thread here on the subject, but I ended up just doing it the simple way by using this plus a few simple additions for full mic recording options. Again, be sure your firmware version is correct, and that whatever you use works for the glowlight as well as plain NST. You also need an OTG cable and a external USB sound card gizmo. Examples are in the thread.

Before you do anything like the USB Host I would urge you to make a complete backup of your device. You can do this in a number of ways, probably the easiest is through NookManager. That way if everything goes wrong, you can go back to your last good configuration. You don't need to have used NookManager to root in order to use the backup/restore backup function.

And basiclly have all the apps I need except to important ones for me. Pocket and Wunderlist.

I had no luck with Wunderlist. It seems like you would have to go back to as early as v. 1.3.1 and I couldn't find a copy anywhere. Even if you could, it might not be able to login. As for Pocket (aka ReadItLater), there is a discussion here with some older versions that were working at the time of the postings.

Damn thing won't root

I do hope someone will see this :)
Right so, what i have is originally a NSTG (broke screen, got one without glowlight, and i miss it a lot but such is life). I have rooted it once or at least i think as i got an apk installed, then i had to reset it. Now, about 1 year after that, i want to try again.
I tried with NookManager and the issue is that it never patched the uRamdisk but managed to get everything else to work. So there is no pdf reader in the nookmanager apks, so i wanted to use ADB to push the apk to /system/app but with no luck as it does not allow to rewrite it to rw (why, is beyond me). Then i tried Droid explorer, which does lot let me to copy or drag-drop apk into the /system or /system/app folder.
Then i tried glawnooter, with CWM, but same thing!
So, given that i have the 1.2.1 version, does anyone know what the reason for not patching the uRamdisk is, and how i can fix it or how on earth can i install one bloody apk so i can read pdfs normally?

It would be quite an interesting issue but i am limited with time, hence my frustration

This Nooter is officially supported by The Nooter Project for Nook Simple Touch

I'm not adding certain things because I don't believe they should be available as part of a rooting kit designed to give users more control of their devices. Things such as additional readers or CPU Clocks are up to the user to install themselves and needlessly putting them in Nooter creates app bloat that a user may or may not want. You can always drop Apps you want into \nooter\data\app and they will install automatically when you root the device. This Nooter is designed with the sole purpose of opening up the possibilities of the device by giving users Root, Google Apps, and other Apps which make the device more usable as an android device than just an e-reader.

    • What it does:
      • Enables ADB via uRamdisk
      • Installs adbWireless
      • Installs Button Savior
      • Installs Amazon Marketplace
      • Installs su and Superuser.apk
      • Installs ADW + E-ink Friendly Theme
      • Installs Busybox & Busybox Installer/Uninstaller
      • Installs Gapps (Gmail, Market, Youtube, Others)
      • Installs NookColor Tools (To Enable Non-Market Installs)
    • System Files that get Modified:
      • /system/build.prop - Enabling Google Check In
      • packages.xml - Allows Gapps to install properly.
      • framework.jar - Should allow a proper Android ID to generate.
    • Changes:
      • May 26, 2012 - Initial Release
    • Before you begin:
      1. You must already have a registered Nook Simple Touch Glow
      2. You must have a Gmail/Youtube linked Account. IF you used a Gmail account for B&N Registration you should use that one for this process.
      3. You must either have dd (Linux) or WinImage (Windows) software.
      4. You must have an external microSDCard reader or this will not work. Using the Nook Simple Touch can result in it becoming unusable (bricked).
      5. You must have enough intelligence to follow instructions.

    • Let's get started:
      1. Download CWM from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=806435&d=1323121399

      4. Unzip CWM and you'll find an image file you will then need to write this to an SD Card.
      5. Linux: Unzip and use dd if=cwmimagename.img of=/dev/sdcard
      6. Windows: Unzip and use WinImage to "Restore Virtual Hard Disk Image" to your SDcard.
      7. Windows Alternative: https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer/+download

Download Searchmarket app from a browser. The market search is broken on rooted NST.

I'm able to get the market working... but I can't search for any apps. When I search, it just sits there and does nothing.

I can browse apps just fine.

Uploading an untested version of a patch that should work for 1.2.x to the nooter download site. I'll link it here and check in on whether it works or not if anyone wants to give it a try.

    https://nooter.googlecode.com/files/glownooter-1-12-25.zip

Note: This is untested, it is just a patched framework.jar from the latest 1.2.x update. This may also work on Touch without Glow. This makes no changes to uRamdisk so any "improvements" by B&N to the uRamdisk may be lost. I will further check out the uRamdisk when I have more time on my hands.

Maybe I should take this opportunity to ask an additional question: what will this root let me do that tinynoot didn't, other than run the Market? What additional apps would it allow me to run that would actually run well?

One app I have partially working on tinynoot is Jabiru, a jabber chat client. The basic chat connection works, but the Conference function crashes the session. I doubt this other root would make a difference in something like that?

    Thanks.
The difference between this and tinynoot IS the fact it has Market on it, you can actually go to google.com/play now and install apps to the device. Other than that there is no major difference.

I'll try it. Really, all I want to get is the amazon kindle app, the rest of it Ii don't really care about. but when I bring up the amazon app-store, it won't show me the kindle app. For some reason it will show me most everything else.

I tried downloading an amazon kindle apk, but the sites that had it looked kinda scary.

And after messing around a bit more, I realized that my BN account info isn't in settings either. I'm going to try the whole mess again. Can I take a kindle apk from my phone and just copy it to the sdcard and install it?

The newer versions of Kindle won't work on the Glow. The version included below seems to be the latest version that works.
