Removing carrier software after root

Hey all, thanks for your hard work! I hope to make use of it soon.

I have an SC-02E (Docomo) that is no longer on a plan, so I'd like to remove as much unnecessary software as possible. I plan to use the device on wireless only, and hope to use the Play store.

Can anyone tell me if I should be looking to root and delete software one by one, or should I be looking for a ROM to overwrite the original?

thanks for any advice!

---------- Post added at 01:35 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:06 PM ----------

I realize now that my post was not entirely clear. I hope to remove all or most Docomo software. The ideal solution would be to install a non-branded ROM and have no Docomo from the getgo, but I have not found anything that seems to fit the bill yet. Am still searching.

TIA...

If everything works fine in your phone, don't mess with new ROM. I would simply uninstall the apps that I don't want.

It’s been a long time!
It was able to finally recognize the baseband in SC02E.

Hi ma34s

I'm trying your CM12 rom + with sc02e-KK-KBC-CWM-v6.0.4.7_r1-recovery

Everything works great but I get a ! for the signal symbol.. (Phone works, no data connection)
I've made sure my apn settings are correct...

Sounds fantastic! (and thanks for the list!) Can't wait to do it but...

The root is mostly done but I can't find any info on the missing SU binary. Been searching the list but no dice so far. Any info? Is there a file, and once I have it, what's the method of getting it onto my device?

TIA...:)

It's easy, just use Titantium Backup to freeze the apps.

Help! Recovery ROM OK but no root

SC02E, Android 4.3. Recently canceled Docomo plan.

Successfully ran SkipSoft toolkit with International LTE chosen. I can access TWRP menu, but Root Check tells me I'm not rooted. (I also successfully loaded PhilZ, but gained no ground.)

Installed both SuperSU and Superuser by flashing the zip from both TWRP and Philz, but both say that binary is missing or needs to be updated. SuperSU fails at installing via the application, and although it will update once via Play store, the problem is not solved.

SkipSoft installs TWRP via Odin, but I have not used Odin for anything else... maybe need to do that?

Any help very appreciated!

vipsaviour posted the process here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35727179&postcount=79

I guess to go over the process again in a little more detail. Currently this will result in a status modified:

For now do not connect your phone to the PC until your told to by the toolkit. Also just leave your phone turned on.
1. Download mskip's Galaxy Note2 Toolkit from HERE. This contains all the necessary tools needed to achieve root.

2. Download the boot.tar created by vip from HERE. Remember to choose the ODIN FLASHABLE download

3. Run the toolkit.exe and install it on your pc

4.Once installed run the toolkit, and follow the instructions.
You will need to update first if you have the donate version, otherwise enter no.

5. You will then be presented with the device model/build screen. Enter 11 which is highlighted red in the image below (press 'show content'). Next press enter

6. On the next screen you want to do two things. First, in the image below in red is to install the Samsung USB drivers. Enter option 1 and follow all the on screen instructions to install the drivers and get your device recognized. Once they are installed, you should connect your device and it should be recognised and you'll see the device number like in the image below.

7. On this screen again the second step, in blue, option 2 is to select to root your phone. See image above.

8.On the root option page you will want to select option 2 to flash insecure boot.img, and flash superuser and busybox. See image below

9. Choose you choice of superuser. I personally went with SuperSU by chainfire this time around (option 2)

10. On the next page enter yes, and then the process is automated by the toolkit. Follow the instructions except where it tell you to select the 'boot-insecure-alij-N7105.tar'. Instead you are going to select the boot.tar you downloaded in step 2. After that follow the on screen instructions.

Odin will flash the boot.tar and reboot your phone. Once fully booted and you close odin the toolkit will recognise your device and flash su and busybox on it and reboot again and then your Note 2 should be fully rooted, with su and busybox binary, and everythign else working flash, vibrate etc.

I hope this helps. If anything is a little unclear please tell me and I'll try to elaborate.
Enjoy your root people!

Hi.

I tried downloading the boot.tar file but it says not foind.. Please help me with a link to download it..

Thanks in advance

Download this system.img tar and flash via odin. Previous way is dated and boot.img was from previous Android version

Thanks so much for your reply..
I'm stuck on android 4.1.1 and I can't update because I tried using cf auto root earlier to root and now my phone tells me it has been modified and can't update.. Will this system.img work on my 4.1.1???

Robobob, thanks for the pointer. I found your img and I think I'm ready to go. Total noob here, though, so I just wanted to get a sanity check if anyone would be so kind as to give me a thumbs up or down...

I have run a backup of my apps, don't need any data backed up. I have the file DCM-SC02EOMUBNJ2-20141020080805.tar.md5, from http://samsung-updates.com/details/35335/Galaxy_Note_2_Docomo/SC-02E/DCM/SC02EOMUBNJ2.html, which purports to be the original Docomo ROM, so I assume I can use that if I want to get back to its original state.

1. Wipe machine with a factory reset
2. Boot into download mode with vol down/home/power
3. Open the .tar for the modded ROM I want in the AP tab of Odin (auto reboot, F reset time only checked)
4. Install Gapps manager, install 4.3 Gapps
5. Install titanium backup etc.

By the way, what would be the difference between the rooted system image that Robobob posted, and the cm12 ROM?

THanks again! Almost done... I hope

I don't think you need to install gapps manager with the image I did, as that is stock rooted 4.3 for the docomo rom. So skip that if you use my rooted system.img. CM12 yes you'll need to as that won't have gapps installed

Got er done!! Thanks so much for the help.

I noticed that root permissions disappear sometimes but reappear after a reboot. Is this normal? (By the way, I installed the Docomo ROM but did not wipe the phone before loading the rooted ROM)

By the way, been using ma34s 's Cm12 rom and kernel for a few weeks now and I thoroughly recommend it! (He posted the link a few posts back)

Way faster than stock and cm UI and features go without saying.

Brought new life to my note II and means I won't need something new just yet.

Easily the best rom for this phone.

Flash latest cm12 rom, flashing his latest kernel, install gapps then enable root from cm developer menu.

The state of stock roms have me thinking the carried put out crappy slow updates that you can't reverse in order to ruin your devices so you pay for an upgrade!

Have fun!

Yeah, that sometimes happens to me. I'm not sure why, and if it's something to do with the manner of the root and how docomo can detect root access

I tend to get itchy fingers when I start playing with something new, so I'll probably give it a go at some point! I'm quite content with the improvements that came from my current setup while I study up, though. ;)

You've been busy, you and Rob. I'll do my small contribution and add them to my community links page, after work, along with any videos you care to post.
I offered 2 Galaxy Note 2 cases, for anyone who got the SC-02E rooted, so please decide among yourselves who wants them or should have them, give me a delivery address and I'll post them out. They've been opened and tried (for like 3 minutes) but both cases are in new condition, although one box is roughened up.

Props for your work and community support. :good:
