I was stuck trying to root, until I found this thread. Really easy to follow, and it took only 10mins. Hoping it gets an update for 7.2, since it fixes the Netflix HDCP error in 7.1

I really don't care about Netflix the subscription for iptv solves the Netflix problem and the VOD on some providers is on massive scale compared to Netflix
i'm on 7.2 but there is no root available atm and tinkering with it again with a chance to brick it is not worth it, already spent on it 5-6 hours

While I tried to root using TWRP and all the suggested ways i continued to get errors, bootloops, corrupted boot, etc. I downloaded the rooted developers OS Image, then used magisk to patch the boot image. If anyone has any interest in the Boot.img or the developers OS image, let me know i can post links and instructions if needed. This will require the bootloader unlocked (i have read you can unlock with a keyboard, but i never had any luck and used a controller). Please reply with requests if needed.
If I may I would like to help clarify a few things to see if I understand the end results of this post.

I have a Nvidia Shield TV 2017 (16gb, remote only) running Nvidia 7.2.1 developer OS, rooted and unlocked bootloader.

I have already downloaded several versions of the Nvidia Shield TV OS Images (Developer and Recovery). I'm interested in reverting back to Nvidia 6.3.0 however I run into the problem where after flashing the OS to an earlier version, it automatically forces the 7.2.1 update back again.

Question: When you use Magisk to patch the original data/img files what is it patching exactly? I would hope it either removes the forced update or the requirement to first connect to the internet and login to Google Play in order to access the main GUI.

Can you please elaborate on what is the results of patching the Nvidia developer OS with Magisk and what happens when you first boot up to the normal way of using Nvidia Shield TV?

Edit: I've reviewed the information on Magisk web site and it seems the patch is to root the boot.img file. It doesn't really comment too much more about what else it may patch. It seems to add the ability to root, root and hide certain information, and unroot the device. This offers more flexibility than Nvidia offering a rooted and unrooted OS image. As far as the OTA updates it seems to allow them but doesn't say much more about it.

I am downloading 7.2 dev-rooted and will update in the next few days with the Majisk boot.img.
Your last 7.1 patched image worked great. I tried many different guides until I found this thread. Definitely going to install your 7.2 release once it's available. Thanks again, and Happy Holidays.

There has been multiple people working on these things and i am posting link to a thread that i posed a full flash upgrade bat file i used to go from 7.1 to 7.2.1 (post #40). I used the information from this thread to create it, thanks. I am more than willing to try and help if anyone is having issues, but keep in mind, I'm new to this and learning myself.

So I've been reading this thread and the other one linked. Looks like they were some issues with lack of full root with 7.2 and installing TWRP. More recently people have stated successfully upgrading to 7.2.1 with full root. Some have also stated that there are bugs in 7.2 and 7.2.1 and it may be better to stay on 7.1 until the issues get ironed out.

I'm a novice when it comes to patching boot images with Magisk, so I'm still on 7.1 and waiting on instructions that will let me upgrade without possibly bricking my shield. I mainly want to upgrade because I want to fix the Netflix HDCP errors in 7.1
