"Complete(Write) operation failed" commonly occurs when you're trying to downgrade. That's weird, since you're flashing MJ7.

What does the phone say when the write fails? That's the detail that's needed to understand why the flash was rejected.

Why are you trying to re-flash? Why re-partition (the PIT file)?
Write fail is usually due to a partition being corrupt and/or the cache partition being newer than the build currently trying to flash (csc is extracted from cache) whatever the reason, reflashing with the pit file will fix this or using Heimdall. lol you were in one of the threads where we solved this very exact problem for someone http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2547728

Download Mode

As much as this thread is helpful, I could not get passed the "SetupConnection" part of the odin process. None of the instructions in this thread mention putting your phone in "download mode" (turn off the phone, then reboot it by holding power + volume down button) Once i figured it out, the process went smoothly however, I don't think it removed the unlock custom boot image in the boot process. Oh well.

Hope this small disclaimer helps someone.

EDIT: actually after the whole process completed, I noticed after a reboot, the custom open lock image while booting was in fact gone. I used the Vroot method to root, and some people said that the method makes it impossible to remove that image, but it is actually gone using the full wipe tar file. Not sure if any counter or fuse is still switched that says this phone was tampered with, but hey at least Verizon won't be able to tell from a reboot.

This is an ODIN factory image similar to the one posted here but this is an emergency recovery image that will help you recover and restore your device from nearly ANY possible soft-brick by entirely wiping, refreshing, and repartitioning your device to out-of-box OEM firmware.

WARNING: Please use this with caution as this will wipe your ENTIRE device with no chance of restoring back old data afterwords!

How to Use

So.......can this take me from 4.3 to OEM? :D

I can confirm this worked on HyperDrive S4 with Safestrap root. Needed to sell this S4 so downloaded the MJ7 file, I was on MJ7, unchecked auto reboot and all is good. Thanks!

90% likelyhood: You are trying to flash MK2 on a phone that was upgraded to NC5.
You apparently missed the frequent statements that you can't downgrade. The only downgrade possible is from MK2 to MJ7.

Please try it again, and look at your phone when the flash fails. What does it say? Reporting the error on the phone will tell why the write failed.

---------- Post added at 09:42 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:38 AM ----------

stuck... didn't work. :(
I don't know if you're expecting any help with "didn't work", but it's kind of hard to suggest anything with just that.

What didn't work? What build are you on, and what were you trying to flash? What errors did you see (both in ODIN and on your phone)?
Is ODIN seeing your phone?

There's too many possible reasons that this could fail for anyone to be able to help you unless you provide some details.

I have a rooted S4 that I want to trade in, and it has the unlocked symbol when it boots. I want to get rid of that. I used Odin to flash the file in the OP but I still have the unlocked symbol. Unfortunately, I don't remember what OS version was on the phone when I rooted it. Is there something different I need to do or flash to get rid of the unlock symbol? Thanks!

To clear the custom flag, you must boot a completely stock ROM, then wait a while for it to determine that it's stock.
It can take quite a while for the scanner to complete the update. Settings/More/About phone./Status/Device status
Once that no longer says "Custom", you're done.

Thanks! I rebooted after removing the battery and eventually it cleared. Just needed patience I guess :)
