I have installed it together with actual opengapps over the 2016/12/24 CM version without wipe.
Until now, I did not recognize a problem with that. A Nandroid backup, to be able to return to your old system, is surely advisable.

Full wipe or over lastest cm?

Gesendet von meinem MI 4LTE mit Tapatalk
I've also installed the unofficial LineageOS build as mentioned by Jaymee. Dirty flash over the official build is sufficient. For your information Shivam (the unofficial build creator) has a thread in XDA too at https://forum.xda-developers.com/xiaomi-mi-3/development/rom-cm-14-t3488024). Do check out the information there. I've asked in that thread if we can actually dirty flash the official build (some time in future) over his build. The answer is positive :)

I've installed yesterday LineageOS experimental. I opted for factory reset then lineage, opengapps and supersu.zip.
Then I updated to last nightly.
I'm just using Mi3 for testing and only with wifi, so I cannot say anything about quality of phone calls, bluetooth or similar.
But I'm impressed with LineageOS, first of all because "old" Mi3 is so supported and also because it seems to me my Mi3 has a new life. In other words, good work guys !

If you opt for factory reset / full wipe, do not need to install experimental build. You can directly install nightly. Experimental build for your data migration from CM to LineageOS.

I did flash twrp using fastboot. But when booting to recovery, it just boots up in cyanogens own recovery...??
Try installing latest miui via fastboot... And then try again... It's weird that you still have cyanogen recovery...

Btw, make sure your partitions are in ext4 format, not f2fs

Yes, but you must install and boot the experimental build, then reboot to recovery and manually install latest nightly (without having to do a factory reset).

I could not flash anything, every attempt failed. I tried them all cm13, cm14, miui7 and miui8 :crying:

:victory: I ended up erasing EVERYTHING on my Mi3, including pulling out the last hair on my head

But solved it, in the end by :

1. Downloaded the cancro_merge_partition+(2).zip
2. Unzipped package
3. Go to "image" directory, and open terminal window
4. Enter fastboot on the phone and connect to PC
5. Flashed all files in "image" dir to the phone, via terminal (it also updated the modem)
The phone then finally booted into TWRP :good:

I could now flash a new rom via TWRP, without trouble :good:

If you flash TWRP through fastboot, after the flashing is done, use VolDown+Power to enter the Recovery.
If you just use fastboot reboot, TWRP will get overwritten with the previous recovery.
