I'll start by saying that I tried to use SuperSU OTA Survival mode, and did not have success. I was rooted on 98.30.1.

got official update but wont install downloads then restarts and gets part of the way and stops and reboots and says update failed anyone else get this problem

Mine failed the same way as yours samari.

Unroot before updating

Then I tried the unroot route, using the built in "permanent unroot" option in SuperSU, which according to Root Checker worked. Unfortunately, the update still won't apply. I'm still getting the error. I've wiped the phone via both the OS and from recovery, and still no dice.

On a side note, I was going to RSD Lite back to factory freshness, and my M doesn't even show up, though the phone itself (in Fasboot mode) indicates that the USB is connected. I was unable to get the computer to install a proper ADB driver for the phone previously, and resorted to using PDA-Net. Anyone know of a better option? Anyone have a similar experience?

Could we possibly find a way to root KK using a similar method to how root is preserved when updating a Droid Ultra/Maxx/Mini from JB to KK?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2577029

I've done the procedure on my Droid Mini, but don't understand it thoroughly.
It involves using a rooted JB to prep the phone for preserving root by running a JAR file. I assume the JAR file does some important background stuff.
Then take the KK update.
Then run a few scripts, which I guess triggers or uses whatever important stuff that JAR file set up earlier.

Maybe some smart unix/java person can take a look at the JAR file and scripts and see if it can be adapted to work for us?

Make sure busybox is uninstalled. If not see if there is an unroot method what came with the rooting method program? Im just taking a guess here. I dont see what else would cause it to fail if there isnt nothing root related in the system

Thanks for the reply AKShogun. I ended up pulling out an old Windoze XP machine, and RSD Lite worked perfectly from there. For me, KitKat was more important than root. I've run the update, and I'm settling in. Hopefully someone will find a root solution soon. I'll definitely be missing CM11, as I'm coming from a rooted CM11 Droid RAZR Maxx.

I first installed PdaNet for Windows. Download here
I then installed the Motorola Device Manager (to get official Motorola drivers) Download here
I also used RSD Lite 6.1.5 Download here
And flashed the most recent firmware from the sbf.droid-developers.org Droid RAZR M SBF files here

After everything shows up in device manager, you should be good to go in RSD Lite. Just make sure you know what you're doing.

Maybe someone who is rooted on 4.1.2 and plans to update could try SlapMyMoto on the M just to see if it has a chance of preserving root?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2577029
I don't know what kind of magic it does, but maybe it's not device-specific.

Shouldn't hurt to try it, since you could always RSDLite back to stock if anything bad happens.

Speaking of going back... Any chance we're able to revert from 4.4.2 using RSD? Seems unlikely, but I was just wondering if anyone knew for sure.

Unroot before updating

Sent from my XT907 using XDA Free mobile app

I've had the same issue. The worst part for me is that it's not my phone! I'm remote desktopping to my friend's PC to use RSD Lite... THis has been a mess for me. I'm hoping we can Re-Root later, maybe by trying various 4.4.2 Roots from other Motorola devices. I don't use a Moto device, but my dad and friend have the M. I'm stuck with my Nexus. At least you can use Tap and Pay. Anyone willing to upload screenshots of 4.4.2? I'm dying to see what Motorola has done!

If your phone have unlocked bootloader after OTA you can flash recovery for xt926 to 4.4.2 and install UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.94.zip.
I can't post links because I don't have 10 posts.

Not much visually changed. The stock icons have been smoothed out a bit and the status information on top is now white. Honestly doesn't look much different than before. Just smoother transitions between screens, different sounds are available and a few more built in functions.

Performance is fine, but my phone is definitely running hotter than before, and it is eating the battery up fast. I used to get 2 days or better between charges, but I may not make it through the day now.

I too have noticed my phone being slightly warm and the battery life is way worse for me today. I am down to 20% after 9 hours, only used it to take a few pics at work, made 2 phone calls, and showed a friend what was new in KitKat. I could usually go 2 days of work and be around 10% - 15% of battery left. This is the first day after the OTA so we will see how it goes from here out.

    can you post detailed step? please.:angel:
    I'm on locked bootloader too.

    Sure:
    downloaded the SBF you're RSDing to
    Saved it to a folder on desktop
    Extract it into that folder.
    (then the trick is to edit the XML file that extracts)
    open the xml in notepad and it should look like:

    <?xml version="1.0"?>
    <flashing>
    <header>
    <phone_model model="SM_JB_VZW_CFC" />
    <software_version version="smq_vzw-user 4.1.2 9.8.1Q-94-1 77 release-keysSM_BP_101032.021.32.80P" />
    <interfaces>

    </interfaces>
    </header>

    <step operation="erase" partition="userdata" />
    <step operation="oem" var="fb_mode_clear" />
    </steps>
    </flashing>

    the line I've made bold simply needs to be deleted
    then resave the XML (make sure it saves as .xml and not as .text)
    lastly go to RSDlite and point it to the .xml you just edited and use it as normal
    (this involves making sure you have the latest moto drivers, that you have ADB setup, and that you put your phone into fastboot and your computer recognizes it. If you haven't done this before it's kind of another whole process)

    not sure if this will help but i hope so!

    Posting updates on how to use this thru the stock recovery.
    This is how it is supposed to be used:
    1 - Flash LATEST stock SBF of JB thru RSD. (Android 4.1.2
    Blur_Version.98.30.1.XT907.Verizon.en.US)
    2 - After flash reboot phone on stock recovery and proceed to install update from SD card, here select the file that is provided at the begginig of the thread.
    3 - After this first flash completes, phone is going to reboot in recovery again, for you to open the menu of this specific recovery, the combo of the buttons is power + vol up.
    4 - proceed to install from sd card again and select the same file that you selected on the second step.
    5 - Wait for it to finish
    6 - Wipe data/factory reset
    7 - Select restart system, Phone will restart in KK, enjoy guys.

    Keep in mind that you have to follow the explanation at the beggining of the thread or this one, if you dont follow this steps like this, you wont be able to install this update or you wont be able to finish installing the update.

    Got tired of waiting for the OTA so I just followed this on a locked bootloader device and it worked like a charm. Had to delete one line of the xml in step one for RSD to work, but other than that, this summary includes everything. Been using phone for about an hour with no noticeable problems (wifi, bluetooth work, etc.) Thanks everyone!
