Maps relies on Google Services I'm pretty sure. Wouldn't expect that to work.
npjohnson, first: many thanks for maintain pixel 2, hope for many mor LOS versions to come.

Indeed, without GAPPs installed nobody should expect a working Google Maps Apk.

But what I can assure you: on LOS18 (on a Fairphone 2) Google Maps worked perfectly - also without any other Gapps installed.

Only now in LOS19&20 on my Pixel 2 this doesn't work anymore - only sometimes after another App manages the first GPS-fix which Google maps then can use. After this I also used it for 2h for routing. Therefore I hoped it should also work for the first fix - but how and why not?

Are there any non-Google-Apps/services which should bring the missing functionality to LOS?

Google Maps requires either GAPPS, or potentially you had MicroG installed. One of the ways to verify is to download an app like "Here We Go" another Map program that does not require Google Services. I have it installed on my Pixel 2, no GAPPS or MicroG and works fine. LOS does not disable GPS on our Pixel 2 phones, and works flawlessly for me. I don't believe your issue is with the OS, but the app you're trying to use.

I also use GPS in OSMAnd without any problems on my LOS20/Pixel2. I had never used GAPPS or MicroG, always just plain LineageOS since 17.1 or so. Google Maps APK works perfectly fine in principle - just it doesn't get the GPS fix. But it worked on 18.1 for sure (but cant say if changes in Google Maps APK or LOS is the cause), so it's a pitty.

npjohnson, thanks for your effort with the Pixel 2. I had a trouble free install and everything that I have tried, but Android Auto works well. AA gets stuck on the new vehicle startup process and looks for a location. Then it shuts itself down after that. As I use AA a lot on a Toyota screen in my car, it's key to me. Hopefully this can be fixed moving forward.

I don't want to speak for the OP, but my experience has been similar to the post above. Android Auto requires Google Play services to work correctly as a requirement. The official LOS images are GApps free and see the original post Notes section for the only 'supported GApps package'

Notes:
  • The only supported GApps package at the moment is MindTheGapps, linked on our Wiki page about gapps.
  • Firmware is shipped in the ROM package for this device, so no need to worry about updating it on your own!

If you're asking about the Non-Official version, I'll leave that one to the OP since I don't use Google services or that build.

When I installed LineageOS 20 on Pixel 2, I did not put the SIM card inside the phone. I used wireless network to connect to internet and update the applications. After I install the SIM card, even though LTE is on and wireless is off, under Settings->About phone ->SIM status, it shows Wireless. Wireless also shows on the upper left corner of the lockscreen. How can I make the LineageOS display the cellphone carrier? Thanks.

Upgrading successfully from 230131 to 230207 (pure LOS, no GApps/Magisk/...) yesterday til today, I noticed two things:
  • Same as noticed before on LOS 19.1 (but only once as a newcomer to walleye), the progress bar in the updater app shows a constant value while the one in the notifications is progressing. This is at least the case during the period "Preparing first start" (translation from German UI). Was this time 78 % - I recall 80 % for the one update on LOS 19.1 that I executed.
  • This specific update took ages - I started it last night around 10 PM and it was not yet ready for a restart by 7 AM this morning. Is this "normal" for LOS 20.0 as it was much less for LOS 19.1?
Otherwise, thank you to everyone involved on this and previous builds!

Thanks for your response b00ster23. I guess I was confused by his statement, "My unofficial with Google Apps/Pixel goodies included". My mistake. I went to the WIKI page and there's a note in there about using Open Gapps, or Mind The Gapps. Will Android Auto work with either Gapps package?

I don't use Google services anymore. But I did have LOS 18.1 and a flavor of GAPPS installed (might have been MicroG) on a OG Pixel and it worked for me. But again, I'm not selling my phone soul to Google/ABC anymore so you may have to do a bit of digging. Might be better to drop over to the Android Auto forum for verification and research. Good Luck!

Thanks @npjohnson for the new build w/pixel goodies included! No issues so far.

I started having issues with google pay in the last week, specifically contactless payment. I was getting a notification that my phone did not meet the security standards. I tried a clean flash of the Jan 18th build and the Feb 9th build but it didn't fix the issue.

I've done a little bit of digging and I found this issue on github and I think it may be related.

Is this something that anybody else is experiencing?

I resurrected this Pixel 2 for my wife, who's Pixel 3 XL seems to be dying. So it was important to her to have gapps and working Android Auto. So I searched around for a gapps version to use and decided in NikGApps for Android 13. A number of users had already done so and it seemed like the right choice. The install went well and the phone booted up, her google apps updated and the phone runs well and its pretty snappy. A question, I'm pretty sure that I can update to the February 9th version, without impacting gapps. Would there be any issue that could impact the phone?

I am having the same issue. Though I think it was working for me on Jan 18 build. The issue might be unrelated to the build.

I found something in this topic: I now tried many different old releases of Google Maps APK (via APK-Mirror), and found that the "newest" version of the app which can handle the GPS fix (tested on LOS 18 and LOS 20) is Google Maps APK v11.7.4 from Nov21. All six newer versions I tested did not work in this regard (the latest version at the moment is 11.66).
Don't see this as recommendation to run a more than a year old piece of google software - but this is the only option I found for using occasionally GMaps navigation with traffic information which I found for LOS20 without installing GApps/microG.
If anybody can tell me what most likely the relevant change in the APK is, I would be happy to understand it.
But for the moment it seems no part of LineageOS causes the problem, what is fine.

LineageOS 20 is draining my battery in standby with wifi on quite heavily.

I have used Skype the day before, so thats normal to use a lot of battery.
Please pay attention to the last to periods of use (so after the 2 last partly charge): During the first longer period, I had flight mode on. Consumption of accu is only slight. In the last period, the battery is draining heavily. I have not used the phone, its just lying there. I think that some apps as Signal are not terminated or put to standby correctly. They are all on "optimised" battery use.

I've noticed this as well. I decided to switch to xDroidOSS for improved battery life.

No such issue with plain LOS 20 (latest build, no GApps/Magisk/MicroG) here. So, I would dare to say it is not an issue of the ROM (battery lasting easily 4 to 5 days using it on WiFi but with active SIM for WhatsApp and few other applications) but maybe caused by the app, GApps or at least the combination of those with the ROM. Maybe the ROM is simply not as over-aggressive on power saving as some of the modern stock ROMs (compensating for poorly programmed apps - my guess).

Thanks for the feedback. Interesting to hear. I indeed use microG, that might be the issue.

Can I easily to a sideload with LOS 19? Or does that mean I have to wipe all the data?

Hi everyone,

Thanks for keeping this phone alive :)

I updated mine from 19.1 to 20.0. As it was not booting, after a factory reset, it booted fine.

The only issue I have so far is the SafetyNet, I could not add a credit card to google's wallet...

In 19.1 it was possible, but I could not revert back to 19.1 - the website only has 20 builds.

Does anyone know if there is a workaround to fix it? Thanks a lot!

    Should be fixed already
Unfortunately, not on unofficial LOS from 9th Feb 2023. Here's a logcat, different format (what's the best format?) including a few freezes. The last freeze was within 5 seconds of the end of the file.

I see the same issue on the latest unofficial build. I haven't tried the official one. Usually freezes for a few seconds when first unlocking or sometimes when opening an app.

If you'd like to send it to me, I have a backlog of about five phones I need to send out to developers soon, I can find someone.
Hi Np, How to get your details? Does XDA have PM? I'll send you my old Pixel 2

Any info as to whether or not the google wallet stuff will be fixed? It's been broken for about a month now and I'm just wondering if I should clean install a different rom or wait a bit longer. I really like the unofficial build and would love if it was fixed!

Hi @npjohnson , I've just downloaded your latest build for lineageos 20.
I'm getting the same Error BootLinux error.
When i follow the guide, it won't allow me to boot into the latest '....20' recovery.

    Thankyou for all your work.

I even tried installing your latest 19.1 and following the upgrade guide. ADB reboot sideload, adb sideload package ....20.

I had the error about downgrading, but after installation, same error at bootloader
Working on it, should be an easy fix.

    taimen works fine

Thankyou @npjohnson , just installed the Latest unofficial LOS 20 13th.
    It ran faultless.

    You are a magician.

Edit: only thing I've found so far is it's not passing safety net. Play store is not certified and wallet won't allow bank card.

Will this, or can this be fixed in future updates? Or do you suggest the Magisk route?
Aware, this build as "Get it out there for feedback" the next several will tune all that stuff.
    2
@npjohnson Hi Mate, just installed the latest version of Walleye Unofficial 19th.

So, the playstore is showing not cert but Google Wallet seems to be working. Is that normal?
I thought it at least would show its certified......anyway

Have noticed some screen flicker when scrolling socials. Other than that, it's very snappy and is working well.

ALso, is this medium ok for us to notify you of issues or is there something else?

    Thanks again 😍
    Certified doesn't equal safetynet.

    We pass safetynet.

Yup fine to report issues here.
