@npjohnson

First of all don't see that as an complaint - the LineageOS team is doing really good work - but I also have the problems with various camera apps since upgrading to LineageOS 20.0. Not only the motocam but also with every gcam mod i tried (incuding the one that I used before without problems). Which information would be helpful to find the problem? In the logs there is a lot going on - errors from various libraries regarding the camera. And what would be the best way to give you this information? I think uploading files is not possible here?

Let me know if I could provide any helpful information

I've recently switched to a Pixel 7 and am now missing the notification LED that I've grown accustomed to over the last decade.

Would it be possible to use the light below the front display fingerprint sensor for notifications?

Thx for LineageOS!)

Camera problems are persistent and worse than before now. Sometimes it works but photos take forever to save. Sometimes the screen is incredibly stuttered. You can count an entire second between frame update (i.e. 1fps). And when that happens, it won't take any pictures. This problem occurs in the stock camera app, opencamera, and the 2nd camera app now included in the build (aperture I think). It's my wife's phone, and she's super annoyed and wants a whole new phone because of this. That's pretty annoying because the hardware is fine. This needs a solution.

When the camera apps get into this bad state, which is quickly and often, I can force stop & clear the cache. Then it works again for a short time (albeit with still very slow picture saving).

Dude, wives rarely like custom roms, specially when there's still fixes do do like on LOS20 on its current state.

In your place I'd restore her phone to the stock Motorola ROM, or maybe LOS19.1 if it was working fine.

Keep the experimental stuff to people who enjoy it.

@npjohnson in your unofficial builds, which GAPPS are included?
Just basic stuff or things like phone, gboard, etc?

It's called OFFICIAL not UNOFFICIAL for a reason. Been running LOS roms on phones for 5+ years. Never had bugginess like this before with something as core as camera function. Your excuse making is not conducive to a stable ROM and 19.1 is no longer being patched for security, nor is the stock ROM.

And I've been using custom ROMs for about 10 years, double that time of yours, LOS was still CyanogenMod, so I have no issues using and older ROM to avoid troubles. Damn, I'm using the stock Q ROM with a 2 year old security patch.

You know, every new Android version brings numerous changes and those can be a real pain to the devs.

If your problem is security patches, you can always build a 19.1 LOS ROM for yourself with the latest patch.

Yeah so what about 10 years? That is no kind of point. This is not endless beta software and Official releases are supposed to have a certain standard. Now if I were adding a bunch of weird mods and customizations beyond just a core gapps package, I would understand that I may have put the device into a peculiar, outlier state which I'd have to take a certain amount of responsibility for. But all I've done is install the ROM and core Gapps, which is the most minimal alteration you can make.

Your point about new Android versions would be valid if cameras were failing across numerous devices. But that doesn't seem to be the case. For example my OnePlus 6T is totally fine.

As for patching my own 19.1 ROM, it's not my area of expertise. This is like MS telling me to go compile my own version of Windows, because I have issues with a binary build rather than acknowledge the bug.

If I were the only person reporting these problems, then I'd suck it up to a defective device and not even bother anybody. But I'm one of quite a few who report this issue. It's an issue. It needs to be acknowledged. I'm happy to provide as much help as I can, but I'm not a systems engineer/OS developer.

The bug was reported: https://gitlab.com/LineageOS/issues/android/-/issues/5705 and implies that the other G7 variants have camera issues as well.

And the ticket was closed but without a fix. That's the issue at hand. Aperture camera did not fix it. Anyway, don't be like those guys who sit around in the liberachat IRC help channels that do nothing to help and just berate people for asking.

Here's a question - why the hell would one put Lineage on their wife's phone - Lineage should not be on the phone of a single person who isn't fully aware how to recover said device if things went sideways.

So is the case with all custom ROMs, root, etc. Just a bad idea.

As for your camera issues - As I've repeatedly stated - things work fine for me and the logs have nothing helpful in them.

I'd love to fix it if I had a single clue where to start looking, but nothing adds up, it works for many, and fails for many. I have no idea what that is. Even amongst the people who say it fails for them, with me changing nothing, 3 builds later they say it works.

Just doesn't add up - but the short version: If you're that pissed and in a tizzy about it - use 19.1, or - just don't use it - or, fix it yourself.

I can recover the device if things went sideways. LOS is normally fine and stable -- has never had a problem this severe on any other device I ran it on. What should not be on normies phones (wives or otherwise) is outdated, EOL stock ROMs from vendors who just want you to buy a new phone every 2 years. The only thing more mission crit than the camera is the phone functionality itself. Enough people are reporting the issue that it's not nothing. Maybe it's time to consider the hardware version:
  • XT1965-2
  • XT1965-3
  • XT1965-6
  • XT1965-T
Which ones do you test on? I have the Tmobile model but flashed Revelry onto it a while back (converted to international).

My phone is a Motorola G7 Plus, currently at LineageOS v18.

    Two questions:
    • Can I update from LineageOS v18 to v20 straight away, or would I have to go through v19?
    • Will the update retain things like contacts, apps installed and their state? I am aware that I should make a backup of all relevant data anyway, but I would like to know if these are retained if all works as planned.
(hoping I am not asking things that are obvious to other users!)
    Yes and yes

Great job ! Just done a dirty install including flamegapps and everything is working a treat.
    Thanks.
I'd like to try a build but I cant find an up-to-date proprietary vendor on github.n Is it available?
