@garylawwd is right, what stock firmware did/do you have?
Btw, @garylawwd, idk this answer, but the bootloader, if needed, would he be able to use a j5lte one if needed or would that cause issues for him? I'm asking b/c i've seen a list of compatible roms and i'm noticing some j5lte based roms being compatible with his j5007. I'm trying to get an idea of what i need to do to help him out if i need to run another twrp build
It is lollipop. And I've seen someone share his recovery end with j5lte also.
Thats what i thought, so it would have to be a new build pointing at LPBL. Problem is most of the newer roms require MMBL.
Do you remember if that j5lte recovery end was LP based or MM based? Or where that was?
I have to ask it, are you trying to just update your recovery or are you trying to eventually flash a newer rom, like pie?
Since I can not confirm which rom my model fits, for now I just want to update twrp.
And if there's a rom stable to flash, I surely want to flash it .

I have installed TWRP 3.3.1 on my J500FN, and it is only a black screen when I boot to recovery. I have reflashed using Heimdall with the same problem. I used Heimdall to flash 3.1.1 and that works fine (i.e. TWRP shows). Any ideas on how I can get it to work?

What bootloader do you have? It sounds like you are on a LP bootloader and not a MM bootloader
Thanks for your reply, I believe it was an LP one since it was running stock LP before I switched. I found a link to 6.0.1 boot and modem firmware which should theoretically work. Waiting for it to flash now.
Yeah, this was specifically made for MMBL, i could even point out the commit and give you an example of what it would look like if made for a LPBL. But its all good. Let me know what happens.

What was the last tw based rom you had? Have you flashed any rom higher than 7.1.1/7.1.2? If you know that, i can tell you
Does 'reboot/recovery' and then 'reboot/system' work properly in your j5 (2015) recovery?
