Updated to 4.4.2 successfully with rooted NB4.

I was on NB4 rooted with Kingo 1.18. No custom recovery, just a simple root. Had SuperSU, ES File Explorer and Titanium Backup installed (that required root). Had bunch bloatware (AT&T and Sumsung apps) frozen using Titanium. I unfroze At&T Software Update, FW Upgrade, and Local FOTA. Enabled SuperSU survival mode, then proceeded with the upgrade with no issues.

Things to note, I did loose root after 4.4.2 update. I never flashed any custom rom or leaked rom on this phone. On rooted NB4, the boot screen said Custom, now it simply show Samsung Galaxy Note 3 logo. I did NOT have to uninstall root before applying 4.4.2 update.

So you DO NOT need to uninstall kingo 1.18 NB4 root before the update, those of you with custom recovery, safestrap etc maybe running into other issues unrelated to root causing the update to fail.
i tried this method and did not work i also had never done revocery or custom roms

Where the update is failing, did any of you do the gps fix and replaced the stock files? May want to put the original gps files back and set the permissions and try the update again.

Wow -- this has been such a mess. I was on rooted NB4 when official KitKat update failed. Downloaded the FOTA update that someone here provided and tried to do the update manually through recovery, but would get various failures related to files in the /system folder not being kosher. I was able to get past these errors with /system/app by copying the offending files from an extracted MI9 image. I tried to do the same thing when I started getting errors with files in /system/lib but that resulted in boot loops and I became scared and exasperated -- a bad combination. I finally decided to go to an AT&T stored with a service center and a nice young gentleman was able to help me by restoring my phone to MJ5. Once this was done everything on my phone became kosher -- padlock was gone and status was official. I was happy. FOTA for NB4 came and installed without issues. FOTA for NC2 is currently downloading. Lesson learned: I'm too old for these shenanigans.

Is there a way to reinstall a fresh bone stock MJ5 firmware through ODIN (similar to what the best buy/AT&T support guys are doing) ??

This might eliminate any trace of the former rooting that is causing the conflict with 4.4
This question has been plaguing me, also. There are custom ROMs in the dev section that are based on MJ5 so why isn't the stock MJ5 available anywhere?

I just got back from the Samsung Experience store at my local BB. The employee had no idea what I needed done so I talked him through flashing the NB4 through SMART to it. Downloading the OTA now at a snails pace. I will post results.

Success! I just used the 2400258.zip and updated via recovery.

What exactly did you say to them when you approached them?

FRUSTRATED to the hilt!! Just gonna wait it out. This community always comes thru with solutions. Perhaps Sammobile will release the entire firmware that will wipe and install via KIES.

Will stay lurking here.....its a-coming. I know it. LOL.:good:

I went up to the Samsung kiosk at my local best buy last night, they didnt have the update yet and I didn't think about just having them re-flash NB4.

In all of my messing around today I did manage to get the Device Status under Settings > General > Status > Device Status to say Official again instead of Custom.

When trying to manually install the update via recovery I get the error ""/system/bin/app_process has unexpected contents" I'm not rooted anymore and don't want to re root just to look at whats in that. I'll probably go back to BestBuy this afternoon and have them re-flash NB4

I told him that the new kitkat update is failing at 27% and I went through the entire update process several times and it fails at the same point. He kept saying after hooking up to the laptop that he didn't have kitkat for my device and I told him I knew he didn't have it and I was only asking to have my current firmware reflashed. I told him that this is an issue with the incremental nb4 update and for some reason if you use SMART to reflash nb4 it would work.

I'll give it a shot then myself, thanks :good:

This will get everyone back to the MJ5 - don't root. Let it update to NB4. Use Kingo to root. Then go through the lists here in the forum (someone should compile, consolidate and reorganize the checklists). Do each step even if "nothing is missing" - don't forget to delete first, then paste the replacements and manually set permissions. Then run the cfg (as zip in recovery).

That was my roundabout process... i'm missing root, but the improved speed is nice and gps is quick now.

Thanks Jakman85!! You got me past the 27% mark! These are Jakman85's instructions that I modified for my sucess

1) Boot into SafeStrap
2) Go to the Rom slots and delete all Roms and Partitions EXCEPT the stock slot (AGAIN, LEAVE THE STOCK SLOT ALONE!)
3) Reboot into the Stock Rom
4) Open the SafeStrap App and uninstall the bootloader

If Wanam Xposed is installed on your phone continue, else skip 5 & 6
5) Open Xposed app and Uninstall the Xposed Framework
6) Uninstall Wanam Xposed and Xposed apps

If you froze/Deleted any System apps continue, else skip 7 & 8
7) Open the app you used to freeze the system apps (e.g. Titanium Backup) and unfreeze them
8) If manually removed the system apps, go into your backup folder and restore them along with changing their permissions (search the forums for better explanations)

9) Open Root Explorer (or any file manager with root access) and go to /system/csc/
10) Look for feature.xml.bak. If this exists, delete feature.xml and rename feature.xml.bak to feature.xml
11) See if dexdump is in /system/xbin/ if not down Download dexdump from Jakman85 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51440984&postcount=313
12) Copy dexdump to /system/xbin and set correct permissions
13) Check for Update and let it do it's thing!!

Note : on first startup after upgrade I did not have touch screen access but the S-PEN did work a treat. One reboot and it was back to normal
Renaming the file worked for me. Wow, thanks. What a weird little thing.

Got it... Finally!

OK, was finally able to get KK installed. I am one who took the original KK leak, downgraded to MJ5 --> NB4 and Rooted.

After repeated attempts following the instructions of replacing files, etc I got tired of each time it wiping the phone and having to start over... so, out of desperation I decided to try sideloading the KK update just to see what error I would get next....

This same file which had failed each and every time actually WORKED. If you're getting the failure, you may want to give this a shot.

I AM NOW RUNNING KK... thanks to all those who responded with suggestions.

can you describe in detail how you sideloaded the file please?
