Go back

Why don't you want to go back to MJ5 first? I was in the exact position. I was at NB4 rooted and couldn't upgrade. I ended up flashing MJ5 to the note 3 which left it unstable with a different baseband then build number.I followed this document with these files. Google "Restore for MJ5 Doesn trip Knox" Click the first link. I installed the nb4 update off the extsd card. Then did the adb sideload to get to NC2. No custom status or Knox trip straight official 4.4.2.

Ok, I made a slight mistake...the upgrade didn't fail on a2fsck...rather it was e2fsck.

Restored the SafeStrap NB4 backup.

Unrooted.

Rebooted to recovery and tried to load the update from SD and ...same thing. It complains abut e2fsck.

Hey, that $100 is still on the table if someone wants to try to fix my issue.

Just PM me.

Android Still GPS is broken
I have the KitKat leaked in January, not the official update on my Note 3 AT&T, but the GPS seems to be fine. It was broken as for everyone else when I had Android 4.3 on it. Did a couple of trips, over 50 miles each and through multiple zones with and without LTE service, and it kept navigating fine. One thing that may be different is, that I have installed the "GPS Aids" program from Google Play, downloaded GPS Aiding Data and tested it to see which satellites are visible etc. I actually have a paid version of this program, but there is also a free one. See if that would help you, and if you care, let us know here. Good luck!

Yes. I use a small free little app called GPS Test from Cartcross limited.

I tried about 5 times to get the OTA to install. I have only rooted via Kingo and did the GPS fix manually.

I reverted the GPS fix, unrooted and removed SuperSU and it failed every time.

I was staring at the 5 rows of icons on my home screen thinking WHYYYYYYYYY?! Then I realized... 5 row launcher.. doh! Well, I'm not going back to 4 rows just for 4.4.2.

I'll wait for a root solution and then update.
One of the files that the 4.4.2 OTA is trying to patch is /system/etc/gps.conf. When you reverted GPS fix, did you restore this file to the original? if not, grab it from another device, or maybe someone with rooted NB4 ROM could post it here, and restore to what the OTA package expects. If after that it still fails, try to do the OTA update from the system recovery (by adb sideload or install from SD card) and note the exact error message it shows. It tells you which file has an "unexpected contents", and you could then try restoring all such files. Of course, to do such restoring you still need root.

I did. I made backup files of each file (renamed them all to .bak) and the only thing keeping it from working was the launcher I changed out.

Once I reverted that to stock and unrooted, the OTA installed fine. I'm digging PowerAMPs lockscreen controls.

Ongoing notifications are merged

Before kitkat, there were separate notification area for Ongoing Notifications and Actual Notifications. It was good when they were separated because Ongoing Notifications always appeared on top.

With this update, both of these types are merged and they are not sorted. So you will have Ongoing notification that you can't dismiss in the middle of actual notification. So the wifi connected ongoing notification appears in between text message and email. Very annoying to see when you have multiple ongoing notifications.

I always have wifi connected, tasker and data usage ongoing notifications and with the new sorting, it looks really ugly.

Is anyone else getting horrible battery life after update?
I'm getting ~11-12 hours on battery with about 6-7 hours of screen on time, power saving mode off, and lots of other battery killing things enabled. Try a factory reset and disabling almost everything you can in the settings menu (while still maintaining full functionality of the phone, contacts, Play Store, etc). There could also be a rouge app causing your poor battery life. This worked for me, so it's worth a shot.

I just experienced a pop up saying "android.process.acore has stopped." When I clicked on "ok" it popped right back up and wouldn't go away no matter what. I tried multiple reboots, battery pulls, etc, but nothing worked until I did a factory reset. This sucks. I had just gotten everything set up exactly the way I liked it

I wish I had never unrooted my phone and installed the evil OTA update :crying:

DITTO! I totally agree.

What's so funny, is I tried to warn people about updating to KK. How you'll loose root, and there presently is no root, and possibly none in the foreseeable future.

And honestly, with everything we lost because of this update, what have we seriously gained? I know, I know, the gps issue. Well, it really didn't effect me. Honestly, I lost a great deal more, because of this stupid update, than when I was on jellybean.

Save time, Spend 10 mins at B.B.

I visit BB yesterday to reflash my phone. The Samsung representative had issues logging on to smart tools. She actually showed me the screen on the laptop. She explained that she has to use her best buy login username and password that is assigned to her to login which was failing. No one in the store did know what the issue was. Since I told her I'm a IT professional she asked for my assistance. I verified SmartTool is the software that is required to flash all the current Samsung phones. The error message required that TLS is required to connect. She was using I.E. to login which was pretty simple access the I.E. settings and enabled it. Right afterwards she was successfully able to login to the Samsung Server. Even if you did have the tool its still useless. The tool is only used to access SAM server only. Plus the laptop she was using I'm sure is dmz or other words the MAC ID of the pc is registered on their firewall to even connected. So having this tool is irrelevant. A real Samsung guru knows Samsung has been using upgraded versions of this to flash it phones. BTW they currently have 4.4.2 available. It took only 7 minutes to flash my At&t Note 3 to Kitkat 4.4.2

I know we can't flash back to NB4 or even MJ5 since the update, because it changed/updated the locked bootloader. However, does anyone know if BB can flash the official 4.4.2 KitKat over an already updated OTA 4.4.2 phone? Logically, wouldn't it work? It's not reverting back to an older OS. The reason why is I didn't un-root my phone before I flashed the update. Now, I have that stupid SU app that I had to disable. Various apps (example: isis) thinks my phone is rooted, which it is not.

They can easily reflash it as long as knox has not been tripped. Check the status in download mode.

I assure you if that is not the case B.B. will do it with no problem.

Don't take the update

So I'll just explain my experience over the past 2 days of updating my phone with official 4.4.2 and how I now have a brand new phone that is back on 4.3.

First of all, I have had situations where the GPS randomly lost it's connection and the icon would disappear from the notification bar and I would have to cycle the GPS toggle to get it to come back. However, this didn't really occur often enough to cause me any major annoyance and I mostly overlooked it because when it was connected, it was by far the most accurate and fastest locking GPS I've ever had on a phone. So when I heard that 4.4.2 had GPS updates, I thought wow I'm not sure how it could get much better.

Well, it didn't get better, it got way way way worse. I updated my phone last night, and trying to drive to work today waze was literally unable to keep my icon on the highway I was driving on. It constantly kept thinking that I was driving on a side road that was parallel to the highway. I have driven this route almost everyday since I had got the phone and always used waze during the process and never until now had it shown this sort of behavior. At first I thought maybe it was a one-time anomaly but testing it with all my GPS apps showed the accuracy was gone.

Tried factory resetting the device multiple times and it didn't make one bit of difference. Finally got fed up and took it to an AT&T device center to have it replaced. They actually first tried to downgrade it back to 4.3 with their own software but ended up bricking it and giving me a brand new phone with 4.3 on it. Funniest thing was that the technician there said that the latest software they have at the device center is still 4.3 and that the 4.4.2 software is still buggy and not 100% ready. Which kinda doesn't make sense considering its available OTA, but at least I've got a 4.3 device with working GPS again.

TL;DR - "Upgraded" to 4.4.2 and it complete broke my GPS from an accuracy standpoint. AT&T technician tried to restore my phone to 4.3 but it bricked the phone so they gave me a new phone with 4.3 on it, now GPS is perfectly accurate again. Latest firmware they have for the Note 3 at the device center is still 4.3 and technician said that 4.4.2 is still buggy.

I don't know what the official kitkat has that the leaked kitkat does not have, but I have a rom I had to do to get my phone back where I could use it. But once you install it you also cannot go back and the official OTA kitkat is only good for nb4.
