well, I took the plunge and decided to try and add an external mic to mine. at first I was shocked at the shoddy build quality. But the more I started looking at it, it's not bad, just that I've never seen so much glue on normally removable connections in my life. Epoxy on the ribbon cables. Some rubber type glue on most of the boards. Took me a little off guard. Because of that I couldn't really remove the small board that the mic is tucked behind, so I had to go the route of guessing. Well, my first guess was wrong. I guessed that it was the red and white wire (normal right and left colors). I cut the wire at a place I knew I could patch it back up with a little solder and some heatshrink tubing. Well, the unit wouldn't boot after. So I patched it back up, and tried the black/white wire soldered directly to the board. That was it.
I chopped the end off a headphone extension to act as my new port. Ran it through the back, since it was a stereo cable and the mic was wired mono I soldered right and left together. Gave it a dab of hot glue to keep it in place. The kicker is, I thought I had a nice mic I was planning on using laying around, but I can't find it to save my life. So I ordered one off amazon. So no testing yet. I'll keep you posted once my mic shows up, or if I find mine.
