Jyam I only have the files to the custom recovery, not sure how to get back to stock other than reflashing 1.33....BUT this means our custom recovery can be updated with touch now. YESSSS!!!!!

Just wondering if you could use Root Explorer and do a search for "recovery.img" and find it? Not sure that's how the stock firmware does it, but if you could check??

Ok, I just found ArcTools that does it. Locate a download link here. Just use this app to install a custom CWM or to install stock. Works great!!

So, the stock recovery doesn't have a nandroid backup option so I am back to custom CWM LOL.:victory: THANK YOU ArcTools!!!

After a couple days - finally stable

This to you all for the tips you have posted here, try have been really great.

Got my tablet a couple days ago. It came with the 1.32 fw and out the box it was kind of abysmal. I expected a few hiccups but just after booting I tried to access apps drawer which would freeze the tablet 60 pct of the time. I have two good WiFi routers, it would connect to one with the described problems - slow, etc and not to the other at all. Many apps not available at all - several games I like, Yelp, etc.

So - I am no expert but here is how I got my tab from zero to hero:

1) there is a new 1.33 fw available that is packed with some customizations - got it here: w w w .arctablet.com/blog/forum/onda-v812/onda-v812-root-custom-firmware-v1-33-2013-02-28/ and downloaded to my pc

2) downloaded the Phoenix updater from the same forum as above

3) followed directions and flashed it. Much better - all Chinese apps gone. Seemed much more stable - no complete freezes since

4) Followed advice and am using Nova launcher from app store - better than stock launcher in general and has been completely stable

5) Installed Astro file manager from app store so I couple backup, transfer, and side load apps.

For the WiFi, I have netgear routers and updated the firmware from the vendor sites. My tablet now not only connects, but does so at speeds rivaling my desktop. I live in an area with insanely fast internet (fastest in US) so the speeds you see are accurate - this is screenshot from my tablet downstairs with router up. So - even if your router is fairly new check for firmware update.

So now I am pretty happy, with a few things I still need I resolution. Hopefully they will come in a new fw update:

1) even though I have the tablet set to keep WiFi alive in sleep it doesn't. When I turn on the screen the WiFi reconnects and then looks for my email etc. - anyone have tips here?

2) I side loaded some apps, but am still getting unable to install messages on a couple. There is a dumb game I play - rage of bahamut - if anyone can get it working then I be appreciative.

3) Have screen flashes occasionally which is a little annoying but not critical.

4) Power management is bad - hopefully fw update in future will solve this. I am guessing that they underclocked the CPU to 1,000 until this is resolved. I will look forward to slight speed improvement once power management is working, but just a guess.

Good luck!

Same here, apps like Grindr, Romeo, GakeGPS, PayPal report "app not installed" even if sideloaded.
Does someone here knows the trick to place the apk in the system folder and change the permissions to install it?

Thanks for posting this. Especially about the part of the wifi. As a tech, Ive notice this many times, when the firmware update on the router, it would cause many wifi adapters that use to have issues, work perfect.

Yeah u need root explorer. Take the installed apk from data/app and put it into system app.

I did this -- changed system/app to r/w and put the couple apk's in there and executed install but I get the same message. There must be some other compatibility issue.

If anyone can get

Yelp
Rage of Bahamut
elecont weather

to work and post instructions I would be very grateful.

yes

I suspect some of your problem is because you are using Windows 8, do you have access to a Windows 7 or XP PC?

Houuouuuu, you are my God, i love you man.
My tablet is safe, i have update the last firmware with an old PC with XP

Thank you very much

Just remember Dho, if you want to use your tablet on your windows 8 computer, just disable the verify unsiged drivers and you will be good to go.

Wifi performance & ROM install guide

I decided to reflash this tablet using the 1.33 rom released by Onda (whereas previously I'd used the Kasty rom). While the Kasty rom was more convenient (in English, cleaned up, etc) think that the performance seemed a little sluggish compared to the Onda 1.33.

WiFi seems to be running great this time around. I am downloading Bard's Tale which for IPS screen requires a massive 3.5 GB download. I am executing that right now, and it is downloading over wifi at roughly 4 MB / sec. I am downstairs from the router, so not really close to it. Here is a vid while downloading: h t t p : / / sdrv.ms/VwoaC1. This is about 400MB into the process.

I have to admit this is kind of fun because I am learning a lot and while technical never messed around with a tablet in this way, but out of the box it was incredibly unstable and I had no choice. I have bumbled through various forums and found good advice. Hope this helps you all:

1) Download, to your PC: Phoenix Suite 1.0.6. This is the software that will let you update the rom on your tablet. Here si the tutorial and download link: w w w .arctablet.com/blog/featured/phoenixsuit-flashing-tutorial-onda-v972-v812-allwinner-a31-tablets/

2) Download, to your PC, The 1.33 rom. You will need to install a rar extractor if you don't already have one. Download Link: h t t p : / / file2.mydrivers.com/ondata/download/driver/oamp3/V972Core4/V972Core4_v1.33.rar

3) Download, to your PC, the rooting software (zip file). The link: w w w .arctablet.com/blog/featured/root-onda-v812-onda-v972-and-allwinner-a31-based-tablets/ will have a tutorial and software.

4) Basically extract everything into folders on your desktop. You will need to install the Phoenix software, it will create a normal program / add to start menu etc.

5) Follow the tutorial in #1. The file you will point to is what was extracted in step 2, should be called V972Core4_v1.33.img. You will now have to turn off your tablet, connect it, etc etc. - follow the tutorial.

6) Ok now that you flashed the rom you will turn on the tablet and wait for it to boot. This first time seems to take a little bit. When it comes on, everything will be in Chinese. Don't despair. Open the settings link and find the pink cloud. Click that. The first menu option is Language, click it. English (US) is the 16th menu option. Once you've done that I might recommend turning off spell checker in language, for all android devices it causes long text fields to hang while typing.

7) You might set your wifi at this point. As I'd noted before, it might be best to ensure your firmware is updated.

8) Install the rooting software you downloaded in step 3. Follow the tutorial to do it. Basically move it to the tablet and use the update software in apps section of the tablet. This puts a version of SuperSU on the tablet. There seems to be some situation where it wants you to update the binary if you actually open it, but this isn't necessary.

9) Now you are all set to get started with your tablet . . . I installed the Nova Launcher and FX file Manager w/ root add-on from the play store before anything else.

Hope this helps, and saves you 5 hours of forum hunting.

@Jyam,

When u installed the toolbox , did u use the update app in the app drawer?

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2

Sorry Dvalin21, I've been away for the day. No, I booted into CWM Recovery and did it there. My only issue was that the touch selection would not work, so I could never select the English option. I about poked a hole through the glass trying to select English, but it would never select.

Okay guys a quick update. Not sure, if I should be posting it here but I will still go ahead as we dont have a dedicated development thread yet.

So last night I studied the partitions, extracted the stock recovery img and tried to build cwm recovery from the cwm online builder. I pushed it on to the recovery partition, and rebooted into recovery. Finally I did manage to get the cwm recovery interface but too bad it did not recognize my partitions. Worse, I ended up bricking my device as it went in cwm loop and on every restart I just got cwm with no keys working. :crying:

Luckily I knew that Allwinner A31 is almost brick free because the Installation suite doesn't rely on recovery and use flash mode to install firmware. So I am up and running again. I just repartioned to be sure. :good::good:

I'll keep going. I realize now that the A10 also has similar paritions structure, maybe I could get help from there. For anyone interested I am attaching the recovery.fstab which u can refer to extarct images using dd command.

PM me or write here if anyone needs the recovery or boot images. I already have then extracted. Sorry for the long post.
There is just one thing thats been bothering me. How we supposed to use CWM even if we get it working with just two keys on the tablet? Maybe I should directly try cwm touch.

Thanks. I'll keep you guys posted.

onda has not enabled any power managment features of the tablet yet. There is a power managment chip, and the A31 has power managment as well not being used. The A31 is being ran at 1ghz even when idle. If you factor that in with battery life right now at 4-4.5 hours , just think what it should get once those features are enabled.

I have 2 of these and one of mine I was messing with for over 4 hours (installing apps rooting upgrading/downgrading firmware, ect) and it was at 69% I have not had any of the browser lag, however every so often when going into google play I get no connection retry. This has happened to me with all of my tablets so not sure if this is wifi power managment or not.

I have read about some quality control issues with some units, but both of mine seem to be working and looking great so far. I also did the firmware upgrade on a factory fresh device. I think this helps with stability.

PS, Every new battery operated device i have owned I have always let it charged for 24 hours before messing with it. Even if they state they are fully charged when they come out of the box. I have always had pretty consistent battery life trough the life of the device. Just my personal experience.

Note Take Battery MAH on Chinese batteries with a grain of salt. I have seen the same model make of battery advertised and many different MAH. They never are tested at what they say. I would not be surprised if ainol novo9 and onda v972 use the same exact battery. The thing about numbers anyone good in math can make numbers say anything you want. And guess who is really good with numbers. :)
