I have to wonder about any beta testing and quality control. while the screen is nice looking, touch is pretty bad too. At least on mine. battery only lasts while idle about 2.5 hours. WTH. I have been trying to get an RMA from them and they don't respond. Guess my option will be to call paypal tomorrow and file a formal complaint to get my money back. I did the smart thing of bcc myself all responses to their emails!

So sorry to hear your tail of woe, but your experience is not the norm.

had my v972 for around two months, 32gb version. Had some teething problems to begin with, especially with CWM which we worked out was not compatible at the time, though I had bricked the unbrickable tablet!!!!! Phoenix suite and stock 1.21 got me back again thankfully.

However have found each successive stock ROM an improvement over the previous one. I have tried kasty ROMs etc. But currently running stock 1.35, I have made many changes to it using the help and guides posted across this forum and others currently, such as molding the build.prop. getting about 4.5 hours out of the battery , screens good and responsive, no issues to moan overly about. It does crash occasionally but hey.. it only cost £170 so not too stressed.

Looking forward to what stock 1.36 has to offer, and also excited now a CWM is released for the 32gb version to see what Steve Mars can do with supernova ROM based on stock 1.36.

Don't give up on the v972 just yet, the better firmware is on its way....it will come good.

I m on Kasty Onda v972 V1.35 rooted on my V972 -32 Gb with TWRP by Ankar84.
I want to install Iberica v2e ROM on the same.
I would like to know if I do need to wipe internal storage & android.secure along with the factory reset, dalvik cache & system to install new ROM.
Thanks!!

Yes. In CWM, /advanced/format 4 things: data, cache, sdcard....then wipe/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe Dalvik

Onda does not sell direct to customers. I can only guess you bought from o n d a t a b l e t s . c o m. they are not the factory. they are just a re seller using ondas name. From what I understand the only way to get a tablet is to buy from a reseller in china. Onda will not ship direct to any reseller outside of China.

The actual Onda manufacturer will not respond to tech support requests from consumers they deal only with retailers.

Yep, this is correct.

Advice and question

advice: To the people having issues, the tablet stock firmware is crap with too many Chinese bloatware type apps. Steps to fixing it.
1. Download phoenix flasher and the 1.35 stock firmware
2. flash 1.35 if you don't already have it
3. download a custom rom of your choice- Kasty and supernova 3.1 are both good choices (others that I haven't tried include canary 1.0, lost world 1.2, and iberica) FIND THEM HERE
4. flash it
5. download and install super user from google play
6. go to arctablet.com and look on the right hand side.
7. download/install the arctablet.apk
8. open arctablet and press download cwm for a31 based tablet
9.when thats done press install downloaded apps (you now have cwm recovery- to use press reboot in the app and then choose recovery)
10. go to google play and download a new launcher + delete the old one (apex, nova, go launcher, etc)
11. download set cpu or antutu cpu whatever- set it to min 360 mh max 1152 (the one right before 1200)
12. download tint browser BUT NOT THE FLASH ADD ON- set this as your main browser (seems to be the fastest)

Your v972 should now have root access and manager, cwm, a faster-custom rom (minus the bloatware), a launcher that doesn't crash, a browser that doesn't lag, and improved cpu speed. Trust me it will feel like a completely different tablet. I sorta put together all the information I found when I got my tablet a few days ago (the stock firmware was god awful). Battery life is going to crap for now, but hey it's cheap, looks good, and feels fast enough.

Question: Anyone know when the 1.36 firmware is coming out?

Great post!! Quite honestly, I thought v2.0 / v1.36 would come out on this past Friday. That's when Onda has released their firmware updates before after the leaks about them have occurred. However, it obviously didn't happen. Maybe by this Friday.

Here is another Chinese blog post on the SDK 2.0 improvements that will be included. All these blogs can't be wrong.... It's being called "Unprecedented"!! That's impressive.

I'm not a reseller and bought it from ondsa-sale.com. shipped from china. whether it's onda or not. still crappy customer service and a crappy tablet.. Maybe I got a dud. but it leaves a rather poor taste in ones mouth

@clueless25
I think the point is that Onda didnt give you crappy customer service , but one of the sellers
on internet did.
And maybe you got a lot response cause this forum is ment for contribution and sharing.

I like to flash and tinker with my tablet. Could be the reason that im not so disappointed.
And its the main reason i didnt by an I Pad.
Thanks

Just got a 32mb 972.

ABSOLULTY NO HELP from Onda. I bought directly from them. !

Once again, Onda-tablet.com and onda-sale.com have nothing to do with the company onda. Onda doesn't sell their products directly to consumers except on their taobao-store.
When did you order? If you ordered after january, the issues were already mentioned in numerous forums.

EDIT: I saw that it was already answered by msav :D

Hello,

I just wanted to add to the rumor that there is a new 1.36 firmware that comes together with a new 2.0 SDK. This should be realised tomorrow at 10:00, (guessing Chinese time). :p

I found it out after playing around with google translate at this site:
h t t p://huati.weibo.com/k/%E6%98%82%E8%BE%BE%E5%9B%9B%E6%A0%B8%E9%A6%96%E5%8F%91SDK+2.0?from=510&order=time

27/3)
Onda microblogging: quad-core tablet firmware upgrade # # # # Onda [upgrade notice] tell you a good news, Original V1.36 version of firmware has been incorporated directly into a brand new SDK 2.0. Onda starting Chi in A31 SDK2.0 in performance, speed will optimize and integrate into the new technology, but also more energy efficient! SDK 2.0 A31 of the most important upgrade, and a key support OTA upgrade oh! SDK 2.0 will be released in the near future and look forward to it!

Today, 1/4)
The Onda Twitter: # lies Onda quad-core starting SDK 2.0 # This is not April Fool's Day!! The strongest SDK2.0 firmware, and tomorrow morning at 10:00, we the microblogging see, you understand! @ ONDABBS-Onda the Forum @ onda players firmware team

Only additional thing on onda's web site is the addition of 1.35 for V2 hardware.

I imagine it will be a while till we start seeing the V2 being shipped. Figure current stock of V1 will have to be sold out first.

Still waiting for the new sdk. Not sure I trust the above post as I do not see it on onda's site.

I understand you guys pain. I got great service from M c b u b (emails exchanged nightly) until I took delivery (email every 3 days and no help)
don't expect much help from the Chinese retailers. There final solution will be RMA and you are expected to ship back with traceable shipping At About $50.

BTW. FYI o n d a s a l e .com and o n d a t a b l e t .com are the same retailer. Paypal payments are sent to the same email address for both

I trust the Spanish site HTCMania and the v972 forum. They have a link to the SDK 2.0 for v1 here. Downloading now. Posters are downloading and installing and making comments. OP says that this will officially be released tomorrow on Onda's site for the v1. Believe it or not, here's the download link for V972Core4-V1_v2.0.rar . Be advised, the download is very slow and slow to initialize as it is slammed with users anxious to get this release. I'll review this when I have had a chance to look at it and verify. I do believe this is for real as it has been verified on HTCMania. Again, use Chrome to get the English translation. The translation is very readable.

Edit: Developer of Canary rom says the improvement is "noticeable compared to v1.35". He says v2.0 of Canary rom coming with new changes incorporated.

Update: Hello everyone,

Sorry that I have been away, but I have been watching the progress. Love the fact TWRP is now available, awesome. Mcbub has agreed to take my tablet back and fix it, I will be mailing it off soon. Ill still be without a tablet for awhile, but I am at least happy they will take it back and fix it. Noticed all the ROMs that are available, I hope more devs will get involved. Always more eyes the better. Anyway, Ill keep ya all informed and can't wait to try out all the new roms with you guys. Anyway take care for now.

Initial thoughts on the 2.0 firmware.

This is Freaking AWESOME!... Zero lag on stock web browser, able to overclock to 1200. (could only do 1118 on v1.35)
Going from screen to screen it flys. from app to app not slowdown. This is like a totally different tablet. Wifi downloads are off the hook. SO fast.

I did not have to uninstall the stock launcher, i did remoce the chinese apps though

Firmware has root

MAKE SURE YOU DO A FORMAT INSTALL In Phoenix Suite. I can not say this loud enough.

Con Things noted
ANtutu will not run just says checking update and quits.
I had a weird touchscreen issue where the touch would pop all over the screen. I rebooted and it went away. I hope it does not come back.

I will update after I had more time on this firmware.

After a few hours of use of v1/v2.0 here are my impressions:
1. The phone signal meter triangle is gone from the notification bar!! Yea!!
2. Arctablet already has his rom, kasty-onda available, which is basically a modded stock with chinese apps removed, superuser, and a few build.prop tweaks and Arctools for installing CWM
3. This is subjective, but the OS feels more solid and less buggy. Although, there are already some who say it is full of bugs, I have yet to experience that.
4. Menus and screens do load faster and scroll better. Not 100% lag free, but almost
5. Stock launcher and browser much improved.
6. Boot time definitely faster.
7. Battery / power consumption seems to be better also
8. It definitely feels like the OS / graphics processor manage the retina screen more efficiently, which would account for a smoother, lag free feel
9. I've had no problems with the play store.
10. I did modify the build.prop and change the screen lcd to 264, and some other safe mods to my liking
11. When Steve Mars and others get this version incorporated into SuperNova, Lost World, Canary, etc, the custom roms should be ever better than they are now.
12. It's been a rough start with the A31, but this new SDK is a definite step in the right direction. This tablet (and other Chinese A31 Quad Cores) were introduced before the firmware was really ready. If the next version of an SDK makes the improvements and bug fixes that this 2.0 version has done, then this quad core / retina platform will be around awhile. At least now, I don't feel like selling this thing. It's definitely a keeper now. I've had it about 5 weeks, and there have been 3 firmware upgrades and a new SDK version. That's why my research showed I needed to purchase an Onda. I might be wrong, but I don't think any of the other chinese companies are quite as progressive in supporting their product. At least, when I tried to go find upgrade history for the other brands I was considering (Ainol, Chuwi, Pipo, etc), I could not find this level of support and the community to support our product. Thanks everyone at XDA, Slatedroid, and HTCMania for making this a great experience.

Okay guys a quick update. Not sure, if I should be posting it here but I will still go ahead as we dont have a dedicated development thread yet.

So last night I studied the partitions, extracted the stock recovery img and tried to build cwm recovery from the cwm online builder. I pushed it on to the recovery partition, and rebooted into recovery. Finally I did manage to get the cwm recovery interface but too bad it did not recognize my partitions. Worse, I ended up bricking my device as it went in cwm loop and on every restart I just got cwm with no keys working. :crying:

Luckily I knew that Allwinner A31 is almost brick free because the Installation suite doesn't rely on recovery and use flash mode to install firmware. So I am up and running again. I just repartioned to be sure. :good::good:

I'll keep going. I realize now that the A10 also has similar paritions structure, maybe I could get help from there. For anyone interested I am attaching the recovery.fstab which u can refer to extarct images using dd command.

PM me or write here if anyone needs the recovery or boot images. I already have then extracted. Sorry for the long post.
There is just one thing thats been bothering me. How we supposed to use CWM even if we get it working with just two keys on the tablet? Maybe I should directly try cwm touch.

Thanks. I'll keep you guys posted.

onda has not enabled any power managment features of the tablet yet. There is a power managment chip, and the A31 has power managment as well not being used. The A31 is being ran at 1ghz even when idle. If you factor that in with battery life right now at 4-4.5 hours , just think what it should get once those features are enabled.

I have 2 of these and one of mine I was messing with for over 4 hours (installing apps rooting upgrading/downgrading firmware, ect) and it was at 69% I have not had any of the browser lag, however every so often when going into google play I get no connection retry. This has happened to me with all of my tablets so not sure if this is wifi power managment or not.

I have read about some quality control issues with some units, but both of mine seem to be working and looking great so far. I also did the firmware upgrade on a factory fresh device. I think this helps with stability.

PS, Every new battery operated device i have owned I have always let it charged for 24 hours before messing with it. Even if they state they are fully charged when they come out of the box. I have always had pretty consistent battery life trough the life of the device. Just my personal experience.

Note Take Battery MAH on Chinese batteries with a grain of salt. I have seen the same model make of battery advertised and many different MAH. They never are tested at what they say. I would not be surprised if ainol novo9 and onda v972 use the same exact battery. The thing about numbers anyone good in math can make numbers say anything you want. And guess who is really good with numbers. :)
