After a few hours of use of v1/v2.0 here are my impressions:
1. The phone signal meter triangle is gone from the notification bar!! Yea!!
2. Arctablet already has his rom, kasty-onda available, which is basically a modded stock with chinese apps removed, superuser, and a few build.prop tweaks and Arctools for installing CWM
3. This is subjective, but the OS feels more solid and less buggy. Although, there are already some who say it is full of bugs, I have yet to experience that.
4. Menus and screens do load faster and scroll better. Not 100% lag free, but almost
5. Stock launcher and browser much improved.
6. Boot time definitely faster.
7. Battery / power consumption seems to be better also
8. It definitely feels like the OS / graphics processor manage the retina screen more efficiently, which would account for a smoother, lag free feel
9. I've had no problems with the play store.
10. I did modify the build.prop and change the screen lcd to 264, and some other safe mods to my liking
11. When Steve Mars and others get this version incorporated into SuperNova, Lost World, Canary, etc, the custom roms should be ever better than they are now.
12. It's been a rough start with the A31, but this new SDK is a definite step in the right direction. This tablet (and other Chinese A31 Quad Cores) were introduced before the firmware was really ready. If the next version of an SDK makes the improvements and bug fixes that this 2.0 version has done, then this quad core / retina platform will be around awhile. At least now, I don't feel like selling this thing. It's definitely a keeper now. I've had it about 5 weeks, and there have been 3 firmware upgrades and a new SDK version. That's why my research showed I needed to purchase an Onda. I might be wrong, but I don't think any of the other chinese companies are quite as progressive in supporting their product. At least, when I tried to go find upgrade history for the other brands I was considering (Ainol, Chuwi, Pipo, etc), I could not find this level of support and the community to support our product. Thanks everyone at XDA, Slatedroid, and HTCMania for making this a great experience.
So what does this 2.0 v1 ROM mean ? Is it a reall improvement on the V1.35.1 ?
Sorry for asking but i just wanted to know .

Night and day difference.

I will tell you this. If i wanted to do a little web browsing before and I had my tablet sitting next to me, i would get up and go get my laptop.

Now I would grab my tablet in a heartbeat to browse the web. This is the biggest improvement. Using the stock web browser.

I did not start noticing the lag free experience until after I used setcpu to put it at 1200. It has been completely stable. before when I tried setting it anywhere above 1118 it would lock up after about a min. I have set it to 1200 and I have not tried any higher. I am happy with it.

I am about to set up the girlfriends with this firmware now.

Tried but like all the other firmware and custom roms EXCEPT supernova, I can't install PayPal and ING be (mobile banking).

Error: missing shared library.

So I'll stick with supernova.

HTC Mania site says YouTube does not work

Was reading the HTC Mania forum. You Tube does not work.. Only sound. No video.

Initial thoughts on the 2.0 firmware.

This is Freaking AWESOME!... Zero lag on stock web browser, able to overclock to 1200. (could only do 1118 on v1.35)
Going from screen to screen it flys. from app to app not slowdown. This is like a totally different tablet. Wifi downloads are off the hook. SO fast.

I did not have to uninstall the stock launcher, i did remoce the chinese apps though

Firmware has root

MAKE SURE YOU DO A FORMAT INSTALL In Phoenix Suite. I can not say this loud enough.

Con Things noted
ANtutu will not run just says checking update and quits.
I had a weird touchscreen issue where the touch would pop all over the screen. I rebooted and it went away. I hope it does not come back.

I will update after I had more time on this firmware.

The actual Onda manufacturer will not respond to tech support requests from consumers they deal only with retailers.

did you try my suggestions?

I hadn't tried it yet. work 6 days a wk n sick sun. But read the reviews on new version people are trying out. I'm assuming v1 and v2 are hardware differences. I may just give this a try. Not familiar with android as just gotten 1st 2 androids. Yea behind the times shhh. Galaxy 3 changed my mind! I guess you could say with the retina display etc. Would have expected more.

anyway the reviews look good and downloading new version now. being a nobb with android, is phoenix all that is needed? Or do I still need to get the cwd file

Sorry for asking but i just wanted to know .

This is the next update in the firmware progression. The "old" firmware version is now v1.35 based on version 1 of the SDK. The new firmware is now V1 / SDK 2.0.

You ask a subjective question. On paper it is a "real" improvement. You won't know for yourself until you upgrade your v972. Yes, as I wrote in my post, it was a "real improvement" for my v972.

Yes!
The main bug for me now is black screen on YouTube.

Yep,

Mine does this as well.

Youtube works through the browser though. I don't really use it that much so it is not a big deal for me. But it definitely is an issue.

I have not had the weird touch screen issue since that initial reboot. Looks good.

Will there eventually be AOSP etc roms out for this rom, or are there any significant roadblocks such as closed source drivers?
Also, is there an air gap between the glass and the display, or is it like nook / kindle fire hd?

Hi there!
Many of us is wondering, what's the difference between the V1 and V2.
So, once the new 2.0 firmware for both versions becаme available, I've done some small investigation.
I've downloaded the V972Core4-V1_v2.0.rar & V972Core4-V2_v2.0.rar, unpacked the archives, unpacked the images, and diff-ed the sys_config.fex from both firmwares:

This is from V1's:
Code:

As we can see, the only difference is in the camera sensor configuration section.
V1 uses two sensors - ov5640 (5MP) & gc2035 (2MP). Apart from it, V2 uses only one - gc2035.
So, in my opinion, the V2 version - it just a well-known ONDA V971 with single front camera.

Also, the gc2035 sensor in V2 is connected to different ports and power lines from AXP22 PMU.
This fact prevents from using the same config and same firmware for both devices, that's why they provide the 2 different firmware versions.

Hi what does this v1/v2.0 mean? I am using 1.35 now kast rooted.

doesn that mean i need to upgrade 1.5 and v1/v2.0 together? I upgrade from 1.34 to 1.35 using phoneix

The key to understanding these designations is this. The first "V" number is the serial number hardware designation. The second "V" designation is the firmware upgrade version. So, the V1 / V2.0 means the tablet is a V1 serial number and the firmware upgrade is V2.0. The "V1" designation is determined by the serial number on the back of your v972. It is some kind of production number as in "version". Your serial number will either have a "V1 or V2 or Vx" designation. The firmware upgrades are now determined by this hardware version. So, the new SDK 2.0 which is designated "V2.0" is the new firmware version. You would NOT install a firmware upgrade designated as a "V2" if your serial number was a "V1". Look on the back of your tablet at the bottom. It's very plain to see. So, to upgrade your v972, you first need to know what serial number version you have, as in "V1", then you chose the firware upgrade based on that, i.e., v1 / v2.0 ("V1" hardware and V2.0 firmware). Confusing but clear?

As far as I know, you can flash the V1 / SDK2.0 upgrade with the Phoenix tool from any earlier version. Once you flash it, download and install one of the SuperUser apps so that you can take advantage of root as the rom is already rooted. The Kasty-Onda version already has this done as does the other roms. Hope this helps.

the v972 is sold under different brands, some of them have the same 2MP front and back camera and no 5MP back camera (like the CMX Clanga)

Okay guys a quick update. Not sure, if I should be posting it here but I will still go ahead as we dont have a dedicated development thread yet.

So last night I studied the partitions, extracted the stock recovery img and tried to build cwm recovery from the cwm online builder. I pushed it on to the recovery partition, and rebooted into recovery. Finally I did manage to get the cwm recovery interface but too bad it did not recognize my partitions. Worse, I ended up bricking my device as it went in cwm loop and on every restart I just got cwm with no keys working. :crying:

Luckily I knew that Allwinner A31 is almost brick free because the Installation suite doesn't rely on recovery and use flash mode to install firmware. So I am up and running again. I just repartioned to be sure. :good::good:

I'll keep going. I realize now that the A10 also has similar paritions structure, maybe I could get help from there. For anyone interested I am attaching the recovery.fstab which u can refer to extarct images using dd command.

PM me or write here if anyone needs the recovery or boot images. I already have then extracted. Sorry for the long post.
There is just one thing thats been bothering me. How we supposed to use CWM even if we get it working with just two keys on the tablet? Maybe I should directly try cwm touch.

Thanks. I'll keep you guys posted.

onda has not enabled any power managment features of the tablet yet. There is a power managment chip, and the A31 has power managment as well not being used. The A31 is being ran at 1ghz even when idle. If you factor that in with battery life right now at 4-4.5 hours , just think what it should get once those features are enabled.

I have 2 of these and one of mine I was messing with for over 4 hours (installing apps rooting upgrading/downgrading firmware, ect) and it was at 69% I have not had any of the browser lag, however every so often when going into google play I get no connection retry. This has happened to me with all of my tablets so not sure if this is wifi power managment or not.

I have read about some quality control issues with some units, but both of mine seem to be working and looking great so far. I also did the firmware upgrade on a factory fresh device. I think this helps with stability.

PS, Every new battery operated device i have owned I have always let it charged for 24 hours before messing with it. Even if they state they are fully charged when they come out of the box. I have always had pretty consistent battery life trough the life of the device. Just my personal experience.

Note Take Battery MAH on Chinese batteries with a grain of salt. I have seen the same model make of battery advertised and many different MAH. They never are tested at what they say. I would not be surprised if ainol novo9 and onda v972 use the same exact battery. The thing about numbers anyone good in math can make numbers say anything you want. And guess who is really good with numbers. :)
