Anyone here coming from the OP 9 Pro?
  • I'd like to know which screen is easier to read under direct extra-bright sunlight.

I just got the Pixel 7 Pro and am comparing it to my OnePlus 9 Pro.
I bought a LUX meter and opened a 50% white pattern.
Looks like this:
1669671086342.png

I configured both phones for manual brightness.
I choose "natural" for the color setting since the Pixel didn't have the "vivid" I usually use on the 9 Pro.

The Pixel 7 Pro registered 800 LUX while the 9 Pro absolutely demolished it with 1800 LUX.

There's no comparison. My 9 Pro running an AOSP ROM absolutely destroys the 7 Pro for maximum manual brightness.

I'll test auto-brightness later today.

Edit: See post #44 for updates

I assume you got such results on OnePlus 9 Pro due to HBM mode being enabled by default in a few custom ROMs (when you slide the bar to the maximum), which obviously isn't a fair comparison. Disable HBM on OP9 Prom and do the measurements again.

IMO, it's clearly a rebranded exynos chip... This 64bit only thing is also annoying... There are browsers and apps like discord that run choppy and looks to be worse than 60 fps like they're not optimized....

Sure, I hope fixes come but buying a phone waiting for fixes is not something I support...

The OnePlus 9 pro absolutely is better... But the 7pro is the "hot" item at the moment... Google probably paid a lot for marketing tbh

Okay, this will make the 7 Pro fans happier.

I figured the AOSP ROM on the OnePlus 9 Pro might have had some kernel tweaks for the display even though the developer never advertised this as a feature.
So, I restored the 9 Pro back to stock ROM and updated to the latest version of 13.
Then, I re-ran the LUX tests.

The stock 9 Pro "natural" is very flat, not very bright.
So, I changed it to "vivid/default".
Then on the 7 Pro I noticed that the "adaptive" works like the "vivid" on the 9 Pro does.
Basically, I adjusted both phones for the highest-LUX possible color temperatures.

I tested stock 7 PRO "adaptive" vs stock 9 Pro "vivid" using Google Photos as the app on both.
  • The 7 Pro hit a maximum of 1048 LUX on manual-brightness mode
  • The 9 Pro hit a maximum of 1139 LUX on manual-brightness mod
This is much more comparable. But the 7 Pro is not brighter than the 9 Pro in standard-brightness mode.

I then moved on to testing auto-brightness modes.
Using the same 50% white picture on both phones and using the same Google Photos app.
  • The 7 Pro hit a maximum of 2362 LUX on auto-brightness mode
  • The 9 Pro hit a maximum of 1934 LUX on auto-brightness mode
So, the 7 Pro will have a little more brightness to work with when AOSP or Kernel mods come around.

Bonus info....
The OnePlus 9 Pro has a slider for its "Vivid" color temperature option.
You can adjust from Cool to Default to Warm (and anywhere in between).
I took max manual-brightness measurements of each.
I would have assumed "Cool white" would be the brightest. I was wrong!
  • Cool = 1056
  • Default = 1139
  • Warm = 1069

One downside I've noticed is the Pixel 7 Pro is heavy enough that it pulls my gym shorts down a little on the side where it's in my pocket.
My OP 9 Pro is lighter in weight by just enough that it doesn't have that problem.

Did some more testing.

The Pixel has about a -5dbi WiFi signal difference when I walk next door. It holds onto my WiFi signal a little better than the OnePlus.

Both phones are about the same, just as easy to read under direct sunlight when looking at black text with a white background.
Inside, the OnePlus has easier to read text.
When looking at a black background, both are about the same but the Pixel is easier to read a little more often. Or maybe, a little sooner.

The Pixel has a wider screen, so you get more text information onscreen for each line. But the OnePlus has easier to read text. Might just be a color temp & font tweak that can be adjusted.
The pixel has a better lit display - A little brighter more often than the OnePlus. Good for older eyes needing to read in a less bright environment.
I need to put the OnePlus font and display color temperature on the pixel.

Put both phones to max manual-brightness and set them on top of my trashcan out in the 75 degree F* sun.
After about 30 minutes (?) the Pixel had changed to a dark theme for the map.
And the OnePlus was still very bright but while I was looking at it, it killed the Map and killed the WiFi and gave me a message that it had overheated and would reduce functionality.
The OnePlus recovered quickly and still had a nice bright screen.
The Pixel said "FU" to the manual-brightness and non-dark mode. It decreased the screen brightness and turned on dark mode all by itself. But it kept functioning!

I then changed both to auto-brightness and the Pixel was noticeably brighter than the OnePlus with that configuration. I came back out 10 minutes later and they were both the same brightness.

The OnePlus got 38 satellites compared to just 24 for the Pixel (per GPU Status app):

At this point I got a message that the OnePlus battery was down to only 16%.
The Pixel is at 68%. Both phones started out at 100%, though the OnePlus did have three major software upgrades it had to perform before I started testing.

Put both phones on the charger.
The OnePlus is already at 100%. The pixel is charging a lot slower.

Cellular strength at my desk inside my house

  • OnePlus 9 Pro was -108 average
  • Pixel 7 Pro was -114 average (not as good)

Neither number is good but my desk has always been a cellular black hole.

Honestly I picked up my OnePlus 9 today while my Pixel 7 Pro has been on the charger and it's both running hotter and lagging more in OOS13 than my 7 Pro does doing the same things.

Also what the heck was OnePlus thinking with this new way to dismiss notifications!? You have to swipe twice or swipe and hit the trash can to remove each notification unless you hit the X and clear everything at once. Very poor choice.

Definitely can't go back to this thing.

last year i have tested many flagships from every brand and i can only say, for me is P7P best what is in market right now, but its every subject opinion as mine, comparing to famous S22U or OP10Pro is P7P destroyer. Most wanted for me is battery life(8-9h SOT on P7P) and cameras. and also customization without any complications.

I had a OnePlus 9t i believe and it's the worse phone I've ever came across, it feels extremely cheap in my hands and camera quality isn't good at all

Tested 9 Pro vs 7 Pro screen usability while wet.

With water from my sink running over the 9 Pro, I can kind of, almost control a few things. You know. If I tried hard enough for three minutes, I could probably send a text message.

The 7 Pro was useless under water. When the water wasn't controlling the screen, the display was ignoring my finger presses. An hour wouldn't be enough time to do anything on the phone. It just pretended my fingers didn't exist.

------AND IN THE END--------

I've decided to stick with the 7 Pro.
But that's more out of boredom from the 9 Pro and another reason that I'd rather not bring up for discussion in an open forum.
The 9 Pro is a really, really good piece of hardware if you don't care about all-out vibration strength or sound quality from the built-in speakers. Practically speaking, I should have stayed with it.

The 7 Pro is a very good phone. I'll seriously miss the notification slider. That was an amazing feature. But it's only an annoyance once in the morning and once in the late night.
The lack of charging speed might bite me in the ass once or twice a year. The added weight is going to be a consistent reminder that I should have stayed with the 9 Pro.

I'm just an end user who did a few non-pro scientific tests.

I am surprised to hear of someone who doesn't have complaints about gaming performance on OOS12. Every game I tried performed like crap after C.48. OOS13 is better but it still isn't as good as a custom ROM since that eliminates OnePlus' across the board disabling of the X1 core on the SoC. Unfortunately all the custom ROMs I tried had other issues and it was just too easy to brick the 9 switching between ROMs so when I got the offer to trade my 12 Pro Max in and walk out the door with a Pixel 7 Pro with them paying me $84 after the gift cards, I jumped on it, and I won't go back. Haven't noticed any major issues to speak of and the performance is much smoother and consistent across the board for me and the things I do with my phone.
Sorry for necroing this thread but I'm currently deciding between getting a oneplus 9 pro and use custom ROM on it, like evolution x or nameless rom, VS getting a pixel 7 pro with evolution x rom (or maybe use stock rom). Which roms did you try on the oneplus and what issues did you have? Also how is it easy to brick the oneplus when switching roms?

Overall, would u recommend the oneplus or pixel? Thanks!

Ive owned, and still do, the OP9P and have used Pixel Experience, Stag, Nameless, and Evolution X. The only one that was tolerable was PE. Stock Oxygen 13 is the best ROM for the device

Overall the Pixel 7P is a better phone, without all the bull**** OP does behind the scenes to FC apps to save battery. Sound, display, nearly everything is much better over the last few updates. I doubt I would ever go back to OP

Been on the Google Pixel 7 Pro for a few months now.
I really, really, REALLY miss the notification slider.
Battery is better.
P7P is heavier and will drag my gym shorts down a little.
P7P has slightly better modem.
P7P has almost no custom ROM development.
All else is close enough to equal that it's not worth talking about.

I'm not a power user though.
As in, I don't do any gaming or processor intensive actions.

I see, so what issues did you have on the other oneplus 9 pro roms aside from PE?

Also did you try any custom roms for the pixel? Like evolution x or maybe the kirisakura kernel?

They all provide ****ty install instructions, its like they were hobbled together by devs that barely knew what they were doing, and expect the end user to figure it out. The best by far for support was PE.

I havnt tried any on the Pixel yet, I really didnt want half baked features that were native to Pixel

I don't recommend either honestly as I've switched the S23 Ultra and can't remember the last time I was so happy with a device (I don't even miss root) but if you're dead set on those two, the OnePlus 9 Pro is the way to go. The Qualcomm X60 modem runs circles around the Pixel 7 Pro's Shannon 5300 in the efficiency and stability department and the Snapdragon 888 is marginally faster but runs cooler than the Pixel 7 Pro's Tensor G2. Also, you can unbrick the OnePlus 9 Pro (make sure you back up all the partitions before you start tinkering just in case but if you have the partitions backed up, as long as you don't lock the bootloader, you can generally recover pretty easily) while you can't unbrick a Pixel if you manage to brick it. I chose not to flash custom ROMs on my Pixel since the stock software was good enough and there were a few scattered reports of bricks here and there.

Also, if you check the OnePlus 11 forum, it was discovered that the Battery app is what is in charge of the gaming throttling. There is a thread there about modifying the functionality so it doesn't throttle so soon.

I used it on my OnePlus 9 and can confirm it didn't throttle but the battery temp was quite hot. I was running 3DMark on stress test mode though.
P7P has almost no custom ROM development.
There are 19 ROMs that I know of, they're just not really talked about here since the devs moved elsewhere.

I have both and frequently switch between the two.... Gaming is better on the 9pro obviously... The fit in hand is better on the 9pro and this is a big deal to me... I also like the build better as the screen doesn't feel so hollow... Speakers edge out to the 9pro... Standby drain edge out to the 9pro as well... I shoot RAW when I can, so the camera isnt that big of a factor for me but the 7pro is great for dim, quick shots...

There are some differences with smoothness including this website on Firefox... The 9pro is consistently smoother... It gets choppy more often with the 7pro...

The 9pro also stays cooler ... Dunno what this really means though, maybe it's just better at "hiding" the heat whereas the 7pro let's the heat expand out...

These differences are very close... The 9pro just got OS13 and seems much better than 12...

If I were to pick between the 2, I'd stick with my 9pro because of fit in hand AND the super fast charging... Too convenient...

    • And which has louder, fuller sounding speakers?
    • Anything else you think is interesting to note as a difference.

The screen on the Pixel is comparable to the 9 Pro. It's got a peak of 1500 nits when on auto. I have zero issues seeing it in the sun.

I didn't have a 9 Pro, I had a 9, but the speakers on the 7 Pro are way better. The 9 had basically no bass to speak of and the 7 Pro has a moderate bass response. It travels through the back of the phone and makes it vibrate in your hands a bit which was unnerving for me at first but the quality is definitely excellent as that was a chief complaint I had about my 9.

I'm loving the fact that apps don't just randomly refresh for no reason. I can swipe away from Chrome and do something without worrying about the page refreshing when I come back. RAM management was always really annoying on OOS12 and would often result in me being unable to log into my accounts because I would swipe away to get my 2FA code and the page would reload. Happy to say that I can actually play games on this thing and come back to what I was doing hours later and it's still there.

The camera is way better on the Pixel side if you like the point and shoot idea. The OnePlus is better if you like to tweak things although I think eventually we will get a nice GCam port that adds all that functionality back to the Pixel as well. I have not been disappointed with a single picture I have just randomly snapped with the Pixel whereas the OnePlus I never trusted it to get it right on the first so I took 3 or 4 and checked them out later.

Battery life for me has been better than my 9 but this seems to really vary for people and comes down to how you use the phone. I thought I would miss the rapid charging of the 9 but in reality I only have to charge once every 19-26 hours so it's a moot point and I can get 50% in 30 minutes which will get me through whatever I need to do where I won't have access to a charger easily.

EDIT: Actually, from looking up display tests, the Pixel should be much better than the 9 Pro. Without auto brightness the 9 Pro maxed at 500 nits. The Pixel achieves 1000 nits full scene brightness without auto.

FYI, fully functional GCAM is already there since the phone came out. Check the Gcam from BSG, there is even a "dedicated" group for the Pixel 7 series and Gcam including a few people who made config and lib. Of course, Gcam already performs FAR better than the stock Google camera.

Also, I got the 9 Pro too, and the camera doesn't even come close to Pixel 7 Pro's.
