I installed this last night as a dirty over my 7.0. After booting up and applying magisk, it works 100%. It was so simple and easy, I talked my dad into doing it on his identically configured phone. I walked him through the process (he's 700 miles away) and all appeared to work just fine, except his wifi.

His phone is connecting to his AP w/o issue, and I can see his phone on his router. The phone indicates strong signal, but no app is able to access the web (everything is off line). it works if he turns off wifi and switches to LTE (Tmobile).

Can anyone think of something I'm missing that would explain why the wifi connects but data isn't flowing?
Anyone? My next step is to wipe the phone and have him rebuild from scratch - but he's in his mid-80's and I'm sure if he'd known this was part of the upgrade requirements, he would have passed on it. Really looking for a solution!

Just try some basic things like deleting the AP and adding again, couple of reboots to be sure. Try disabling Bluetooth and or GPS leaving just WiFi enabled.

Not sure if this is similar or related to reports other people have made of the WiFi disconnecting.

I got this update yesterday morning (November 20) It said October security patches and it came through the official motorola updater.
What's the build number?..September patch was 85-17..
Thanks

Hey,I was wondering if installing the 85-13-3 update OTA over 85-17 would work?(cause I imstalled the 85-17 update to my RETIN chanel device a day before moto rolled out the 13-3 patch for October security)
Thanks?

Well, I'm a bit embarrassed to admit clearing the dalvik cache/cache fixed the problem. We absolutely ran that routine immediately after applying the update, but apparently it did not do what it was supposed to do. I guessing that's because we wiped before booting for the first time? Either way, I had him do a nandroid full backup, and then using the advanced/wipe/(dalvik & cache), it worked. He is thrilled - an me, even more so as it means I don't have to hold his hand to get his phone set up from scratch.

Nope, that won't work. You can however downgrade to 85-13 safely, then capture the OTA (refer to first post) and share it :)

OPS28.85-17 is the build number.

The phone is an unlocked Moto G5 Plus in the US. Retus channel.
No, the new build number is OPS28.85-17-2.

I'll need to unlock bootloader to downgrade to 85-13 right? Currently my phone is vanilla with locked bootloader (never rooted or unlocked)...
Or just installing the OTA for 85-13 by placing in internal storage will work?(I'm thinking it might not work..better to take your opinion on this).
Also I had downloaded the 13-3 OTA on another G5+(stock,locked,unrooted) tried finding the OTA in stock recovery.. It didn't show any option for browsing the internal storage..as listed in the first post..Shall I share the screenshot for stock recovery(if that's possible.. Never tried taking SS of stock recovery lol)
Thanks!

Ah, sorry mind blank, didn't realise that you are locked etc... To be honest, you can just manually flash the OTA (EDIT: I mean an OTA from 85-17 to 85-17-2, may as well stay on the same upgrade path) (there's another thread that deals with how to do that). If you want to go through all of the trouble of unlocking (which involves completely wiping your device), then you can really just flash any build over the top of another.

I plan on unlocking soon..busy right now...
so it won't matter what build I have before I unlock right? Post unlocking anything can be flashed isn't it?
Thanks:laugh:

Yes, pretty much just flash anything that is flashed through TWRP.

Just note that if you ever wanted to lock your bootloader and receive OTAs, you need to know which build you are on now (which you have stated of course). That may be an issue as you're on the 85-17 series, and to get OTAs you'd want to be on the 85-13 series. Time will tell how to get back on track in future...

I'm trying to flash this file through TWRP on my moto g5 plus which has no OS installed ( is that what a clean flash is?), Whenever I start the flashing process the installation is fine until it gets to writing the system, it gets stuck here, sometimes it get stuck early on (6%-12%) and other times later on (70% - 100%). I'm not sure if I'm being impatient or if it is crashing. I wait around 20 to 30 minutes before restarting the phone. Any help at all would be appreciated as it is my first time doing something like this. Thank you.

Hey,
I tried out the Lenovo Moto smart Assistant(last ditch desperate attempt)..turns out it says unsupported device since the OS version not matching with the device version I guess...was wondering if unlocking will have any such problems?..i'd hate to be stuck on the wrong software version that won't let me unlock bootloader or hard brick it in the process
Thanks!:)

PS: Just to clarify, did you mention a way to downgrade to the correct version without unlocking?? ??
