OTA and Non-OTA Firmware for N986U and N986U1

Search This thread
I am on DUC8 on U1. I tried to go back to DUC1 and DUC5 for U. Both are bootloader 2. They were also dirty flashes since I am too lazy to reinstall all my crap. Both took me to android recovery, so I am thinking it will only work if I do a clean install. Had no problem with dirty flashes until now.

I think the dirty flashing to/from U and U1 can not go so well sometimes

Can someone explain to this noob the difference between dirty flashing and a clean install?

A clean install is when you Odin flash with the CSC (NOT the HOME_CSC) or USERDATA files, those cause your device to wipe, or you do a Factory Reset before flashing. A dirty flash is flashing a firmware without allowing the device to factory reset (Wipe).

IMO......
I typically recommend if you're going from the "last" firmware to the most current, and dirty flash is ok. It's an incremental update.
If you're going from a firmware that's "older" or to/from a U/U1 firmware that you allow the device to wipe, there can be some significant differences that could eventually cause instabilities

Any time I have ever went U to U1 or U1 back to U I have always had to factory reset. Usually the 1st install would always fail...not immediately recovery and boot would flash then at about 90% it would fail. So for me, and this is just me a clean install has always been best..but to each their own. I'm kinda OCD..lol after a install I use the hell out of the device until about 20% left on battery..boot to stock recovery do a cache wipe then start my first charging cycle..lol I have issues I know.

Flashed my t-mobile phone to DUBB firmware. This, along with my att sim didn't change the carrier software. It is still TMB/TMB/TMB

I tried the Google dialer thing but that no longer works. It didn't pop up the csc change menu.

Same. You ever get this figured out?

Something wrong with tmobile unlocked devices. It's like it's not really unlocked.

Not sure if someone already answered this and sorry to all my amazing friends here that i am not able to be online as often. Hope you all are doing well.

So your ATT/ATT/ATT lets represent it as 1/2/3 - Now /3 is something you can not change - so if you bought from ATT it will be 1/2/ATT if from T-mob it will be 1/2/TMB - So that always remains same.
for 1/2 it depends on the sim card you insert, it seems you are using ATT sim. I have unlocked version so my /3=/XAA , as stated above it remains same regardless of sim i insert, and i am using TMB so my 1/2 = TMB/TMB if i was using ATT it would look like ATT/ATT/XAA. Hope this answers your question.
Unfortunately the sim card is not changing anything and i think it's messing with my incoming text. I've have had phones that will change all the software upon inserting new sims this is not the case. A friend of mine was able to change her to verizon using the Google dialer trick but this no longer works

I am clueless. The only thing I can think of is flashing back to the out of the box firmware and trying the Google dialer trick. I don't think I can test my theory because I'm on bootloader 2 now. All I know is the Google dialer way worked right out of the box but it no longer works (on the Google dialer enter: *#*#27262826#*#*)

Yeah you won't be able to flash back and get the dialer to work. I tried.

I sent my phone in to Samsung over it, because it was."permanently unlocked" by T-Mobile (I could verify this in the settings and screenshots I took during the unlock code process etc).

I'll let you know what happens when I receive jt back on Monday. I doubt much.

See Post #2 and #3 for the Links to the Firmware
ALL of the firmware posted here can be flashed on any N986U/N986U1 Device. The firmware is NOT carrier dependent and is only listed next to some of them in order to have an idea if you might get OTA when you flash it

    Understanding Firmware naming:

    N986USQU1ATGM
    N=Note
986U or F etc, the model of device
SQ, FX etc = CPU and model specific
U,S,E = Update, Security, Engineering, respectively
1,2,3,4,5 etc = bootloader revision (This is important! You cannot go to a previous revision)
    A,B,C,D = Android version
    T, U = Year (T=2020, U=2021 etc)
    A,B,C etc = month (January A - December L)
1 - 9 and then A - Z =build compilation. This basically means how many builds there are in a month. They start at 1 and go to Z
    So N986USQU1ATGM would be
    N968-U-SQ-U-1-A-T-G-M
    N968U (Note 20 Ultra Carrier version), SQ (Snapdragon), U (Update), 1 (Bootloader version), A (Build 10), T (2020), G (July), M (22nd build)

    How to enter Download Mode:
    Turn off the device.
Connect USB cable to your PC (Leave it disconnected from the phone)
Press and hold down the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons. While they are still pressed, plug in the USB cable into your phone.
The phone will go into download mode press volume up. In Odin you will see that phone is added.

    Dirty Flash:
I would only do this if you are having to manually update to the newer firmware and would not do it if you are coming/going to U/U1 or from beta firmware or if you are on an old firmware. I'd also highly recommend doing a back up prior to the doing this
    Load these into Odin
    BL
    AP
    CP
    HOME_CSC
Do NOT flash CSC or USERDATA, either of these WILL wipe your device
This is a "dirty flash" and these can sometimes cause issues. Keep in mind if things start going sideways and stuff starts not working right, your first step to a solution will be to wipe the device.

    Tips on flashing U1 Firmware:
You will have to wipe, can NOT dirty Flash going between U and U1 firmware
Use the patched ODIN linked in post #2 or #3, Odin3_v3.13.3b (They are exactly the same)
Have an active US Carrier SIM installed to get carrier features

If you get your CSC Stuck on XAA/XAA/(Insert your carrier here), and can not get Carrier options back.

Just a little heads up to everyone. When Android 12 drops for U1, I'll be removing the Beta stuff since we wont need it any longer. I try to keep things a little clean and tidy 😁
