I have not rooted yet and im trying to push the OTA update now. once it goes through, you want me to try one of the rooting methods???
Crawj tested them all the normal ones so far with no luck. Best working solution is flash Shabby's kernel and then re-root.

BTW, informed Agat of the change. He'll be looking at it for his kernel as well.

You can test if you want to confirm. I have tried all rooting methods and they don't work with the updated kernel. You can install Shabby's kernel and test. I haven't done that yet.

so do we flash update.zip then Shabby's kernel then reboot? Can the update be installed by a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP)?

the update can be flashed by any recovery so long as you are stock enough. as in it doesnt care if you are rooted but more of if you removed maps.apk and it tries to update it with a patch the ota will fail.

my suggestion is flash ota, flash root, flash the kernel i compiled and youll be on latest ota with root :)

Normally I'll make one clicks of this right away but I'm going to wait a day or two and see if we see anything from Sextape's sources or Kies. Worst case we can make them via the dump method.

I'm also up for suggestions on boot.img for rooted one clicks. We'll obviously have to use a custom one and would prefer it to be unmodified from source drop except for flipping those switches off.

ota wouldn't run. It's looking for a setting ro.secure = 1

What would be the easiest way to update? I am rooted with CWM and maybe 2 or 3 apps that need root. Thanks
For the moment:

1) Un-root
2) Apply OTA
3) Flash Shabbypenguin's MDL source built kernel (but with root break off)
4) Re-root.

One click fans will have to wait a few days to get one. I'm holding out for tars if possible.

Ok so I rooted, installed the ota, flashed root, and that kernel. I got it booted up and got root checker it says I have root access. But I got a message warning me of a harmful app and need to reboot.

Sent from my SPH-L720 using xda app-developers app

EDIT. i just rebooted and the message is and it is still rooted.

Agat found this out in the source built kernel. I believe the solution was posted in his thread and I'm swamped at the moment to check and cross post that here (since it seems it's time to get that out everywhere at the moment).

Check the Org. Dev Section for Agat's thread or I'll do it when I get a free moment. Just wanted to get this response in here.

Not sure what purple glowing you are talking about?
like if your in settings the blue bars they use in the GUI to seperate sections (like in connections tab the one bar says "connect and share") when scrolling the bar shows a ghost image thats purplish.)
looks horrible when u know its there.

@garwynn - would the one click have the end same result as to the method present to root MDL now? Or should we just wait?

That would be the goal of a one click... otherwise it doesn't match as advertised, does it?

Is there anyway we could do this update process with just our s4 and a custom recovery? I don't have access to any computers for a couple days. Say we apply the update within cwm or twrp, when we go to reboot it usually says you last root would you like to fix, and disable flashing of stock recovery
