It's funny that you mention this. I use a magnetic vent clip. I swear my phone has fallen off that thing onto my shifter or the center console a good 8 to 10 times(before I put the full plate back on the case, and have resided to not charging wireless) And I don't have an Otterbox on mine (I don't use them anymore, as in my experience, just like your wife, they are expensive and do nothing. Only drop and break I have ever had, has been with an otter on it), only a simple spiegen thin case.
I just knew a couple of the times that it was toast, as it really hit hard(going over a hole in the road, that's created, but not marked by crews is always fun). But it was fine. And it actually fell once off my counter into the floor. So I'm guessing that it depends on how it hits, and anything can shatter.. Sorry to hear about your wife's though, that sucks...
But mine is still doing great on the original one I put on..
