I'm on a Tiamat ROM and have been wondering the same thing. Do I need to use ADB whenever I need to get into CWM?
In order to manually boot into recovery, hold volume up and power, once you see the Motorola logo, count to 3, and then press volume down. If done right you'll see android recovery in the top corner, if not you may see 'starting fastboot protocol,' if so, press volume down again till you see android recovery then press volume up to load CWM recovery. You can also get Quickboot from the market, which makes it so easy to boot into recovery.

So I just picked up a 3/4g xoom yesterday(very weird deal went down), and I am having the same problem I had with my Atrix 2 as far as getting my computer to recognize the Motorola. I have installed the latest drivers, according to your links and I get the found MPT device, mz600. Then the not installed correctly error and doesn't show up in My Computer? Any suggestion?
Thanks Asa

Okantomi,

Thank you for this most useful guide.

Subject: Green Bot of !

I recently received a US WiFi only Xoom and am anxious to root it. I have reviewed many guides and will be ready if I can resolve the dilemma of "The "Green Bot of !". I have been unable to locate a clear procedure for resolving that issue.

Your Guide's "UPDATE (12/28/11)" suggests a procedure for unrooted devices for dealing with the Green Bot of ! which involves flashing various
image (.img) files. It is difficult/impossible to otain stock moto files for one's device if current OTA updates have been applied. Backlevel stock files are available and if used may produce unpredictible results.

It is unclear exactly what the, "UPDATE (12/28/11)" procedure is intended to accomplish in the case of an unrooted device. I do not understand the utility of flashing backlevel images or how this relates to getting Clockworkmod Recovery accessible.

Are you aware of a clear procedure for dealing with the Green Bot of !? At the moment that appears to be a major impediment to accessing
Clockworkmod Recovery once flashed.

Thank you in advance.

First of all a big thanks to okantomi and all the contributors to this guide. I got my UK Xoom unlocked and rooted.

The Xoom was on version 3.2. I followed the guide step by step, I used Mandelbrot Benoit's alternate adb setup as described in the guide with no issues whatsoever.

The recovery file I used was recovery-Tiamat-R4c-100611-1150-cwm.img which I renamed to recovery-solarnz-100611-1150.img before flashing. I'm not sure if this helped but I had seen issues that others were having so I followed this potential fix.

The only potential heart attack moment that is worth mentioning was when I first tried to reboot into Clockwork Recovery. The screen went blank for about 45 secs. I thought I had a brick. It has not done that since so it must just happen on the first try.

Thanks again all for a great guide.

I'd like to say thank you to okantomi for this guide.
If anyone ever asks how to root their device, I always point them to this thread, as I know they will be able to root their device.

-- solarnz.
(Yes, I'm trying to get the post count up on this account as well, but this is an honest post)

I am honored, sir! This has been and continues to be a group project, in support of the fine development work you and Team Eos/Tiamat and the other devs are doing for the Xoom.
It's still the best tab around, and you're keeping it fresh.

I think you can go ahead. try the alternate adb set up linked by Mandelbrot benoit (about halfway down the guide) to see if fastboot.exe is in there. Otherwise, do check the android sdk...in tools...you've got to have fastboot!

If you find an updated link, can you post it here? I am dedicated to keeping this guide as updated as possible.
Thanks, and good luck with rooting!

Quick question. I have the Xoom LTE. By going back to stock do you mean the original HRI39 or the post LTE upgrade HLK75D?

Thanks!
To keep your LTE don't you have to use the newer post-LTE image? I remember that a lot of people were breaking their 4G by flashing the older non-compatible images.

I'm just rolling back so I can unlock and flash CWM so I can install EOS ICS.

I'm not worried about LTE for the time being. I'm just wondering if HRI39 will boot so I can enable debugging.

Basically I'm trying to avoid the recovery being overwritten.

Why would you need to roll back in order to unlock/root? You can do that following this guide and using the Universal Xoom Root tool, for any (original) Xoom model and any update, which means, right where you are now.

Did I misunderstand you?

Read section 4 of this guide thoroughly, to avoid overwriting the newly flashed recovery.

Ok, I guess I misunderstood the tutorial. I was under the impression since I'm running 3.2.4 I would have problems with CWM sticking.

I'll just give it a shot now. Thanks for your help.

EDIT: Installed EOS without a problem. Thanks again.

I get all the way to the point of installing the Universal Xoom Root.zip file on the SD card, but when I go to choose zip from sdcard it says:

"E:Can't mount /sdcard"
Also, I see some other stuff above that:

E:Can't open /dev/block/mmcblk1p3
(No such file or directory)
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/command
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
What am I doing wrong here?

I was supposed to put the whole zip (still zipped) on the SD card correct?

You have got an external card fitted with these files on ?

5. Rooting the Xoom

The Universal Xoom Root zip file from solarnz is located here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1242241

5.1 You need to transfer the Universal Xoom Root zip file to a working external micro SD card. You can do this on a computer or cell phone, but the Universal Xoom Root zip file must be located in the root directory of the micro SD card.
