I used a USB Micro B (Micro-USB) to USB Type C adapter as well as a USB-OTB cable (With a Micro-USB end hence I needed the adapter)
When my phone was operationan, I often used this cable and adabpter to transfer files to and from my P20 Pro, so I knew with 100% certainty that this worked on my Phone.

I held down the vol up and down keys and then held down the power key. Once I saw the Huawei Logo, I let go of the power key but continued to hold down the vol up and down keys until the recovery screen loaded.

I hope this helps....

Thanks for your reply mate.
That's exactly what I did.
3 possibilities:
- My 3 USB keys are broken (can't do anything except buy a new one)
- My dload folder is not valid (already checked many many times)
- This recovery method is broken on my phone (then I'm screwed)

Huawei P20 Pro
dload method works with SD_update.tag firmware

My CLT-L09 was on 9.0.0.251(C432E5) and I wanted to hard reset because battery life had gotten a lot worse. I had root via Magisk with an unlocked bootloader. I flashed the latest TWRP from their app and did a factory reset. After that I couldn't boot anymore and I could only get into fastboot, eRecovery and dload. I think I had OEM unlock turned on, but I should have removed all passwords and fingerprints because fastboot was pretty much useless because FRP lock was on.

Previously when I had soft-bricked the phone, I could recover by flashing all those partitions from something like HWOTA but with an FRP lock that was no longer an option. I spent a whole evening trying all sorts of things with eRecovery like setting DNS on the wifi router and hacking HiSuite but I'm pretty sure none of those methods work anymore.

Thankfully I came across this thread and was able to fix the phone with the method described here. It took me a while to figure out that you need firmware that has the Software\dload\SD_update.tag in it. None of the firmware on Firmware Finder seems to have that and a lot of the new ones on Android Host also do not. It seems that correct firmwares are the ones with separate folders for L09 and L29 making them quite a bit larger at 5GB, compared to the incompatible 3GB ones.

Thanks so much for all your help!

Generally, since EMUI 8, TWRP does not read Data and Internal memory.
Since EMUI 9.1, due to EROFS, System is read only

Factory reset must be performed only from eRecovery:
Before that, Magisk must be uninstalled and TWRP reverted back to stock Recovery

It worked!

download firmware for your device firmware from https://www.getdroidtips.com/huawei-p20-pro-stock-firmware/ then the huawei update.app extractor tool from http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3262544 open the the firmware zip and extract the update.app file from the update_sd.zip and add it too the huawei extractor tool. move the images for cashe, cust, kernel and system and add them too fastboot folder. flash each using fastboot. eg fastboot flash cust cust.img same for each image. whaen finished fastboot flash erase userdata and boot system. this worked on my clt-l29 c432 emui 9.0 bootlooped with no access to either recovery.

Are you kidding me right now? How!?
I wasn in a state where I could ONLY access fastboot to recover the phone (yeah, maybe DC-Phoenix and stuff would have made an awesome job), the only thing that I had never tried was to "fastboot erase userdata". How does that even work?
I was thinking in buying a DC account for credits, maybe paying a service center... and in the end, what made a huge difference was the only thing I did that was different from every single previous attempt: erase userdata (which I only know its app or user data mounted in /data).
Holy molly! Thank you so much, you saved me like 30 euros.

Send it to a Huawei service centre, said to the staff that the phone got bricked updating itself, and normally they will change for free the motherboard, in case you have bootloader code it will not work more with the new imei in the new motherboard

I have a P20 Pro bricked with Bootloader Locked and FRP unlocked.
The phone was a CLT-L29 C652 (DEMO), but after some issue now it is Chipset-Boston 8.1.0.001 (PR00). I cannot use dload method, I got "System update failed". I cannot use DC Phoenix nor HCU Client. I cannot got Phone in TestPoint mode (I cannot do it in hardware method).

The story: I got phone in Manufacture Mode, then I start process to enable testpoint mode with success. My phone got with BlackScreen but it still works in fastboot. So Using HCU Client I unlock bootloader. After that I use DC Phoenix to flash the C432 version of CLT-L29 8.1.0, after all work I got phone that stucks on HUAWEI animation logo. I got with surprise my phone was now a Chipset-Boston 8.1.0!

Then I tried again to return in testpoint mode, but nothing happens. I can enter in Fastboot and eRecovery.

Someone can help me? Please???

quotation from post #4

"1) Download the correct firmware for your device according to your region from https://androidhost.ru/search.html and extract it. (Note :The downloaded firmware must be of the same build number installed or superior bcoz downgrading can hard brick your device) "

Unless You have speciall rollback firmware (like the one listed on funky that brings you back to 156) do no try to downgrade. Most likely it won't work or in worst case you'll brick your device.
Hi, I need help. My p20 pro's build number is 10 (it's not literally just 10, there are leading digits) but it's on Android 8.1, can I try to install 8.1 again in an attempt to fix the wrong build number?

Sorry mate, i sold my p20 pro more than 3 years ago.
Any advice from the past experience would be helpful. I'm stuck on Android 8.1 and not receiving any ota updates and i think that's related to wrong build number because I tried flashing Android 9.1 of same region but it said software installation failed.

I didn't find any guide. I was in fact guided by Mr. oslo83 in a telegram group https://t.me/flashing_huawei

The process is very simple. I will try to reproduce the steps I followed as under :-

1) Download the correct firmware for your device according to your region from https://androidhost.ru/search.html and extract it. (Note :The downloaded firmware must be of the same build number installed or superior bcoz downgrading can hard brick your device)

2) After extraction you will find a folder named "dload" (This is our concerned folder, pay attention!)

3) Inside the 'dload' you will find one zip file named 'update_sd', extract its content within the dload folder but keep the un-extracted zip also as it is.

4) Apart from 'update_sd.zip' you will also find two subfolders inside 'dload'.
In my case the two subfolders were '... 'update_sd_CLT-L29_hw_eu' & ''update_sd_CLT-L09_hw_eu'

5) Since my model was CLT-L29 therefore I deleted the subfolder named 'update_sd_CLT-L09_hw_eu'

6) Now rename the subfolder "update_sd_CLT-L29_hw_eu" to "CLT-L29_hw_eu" and on opening it you will find a same named zip inside. Like before extract its content within the subfolder and also keep the zip file intact'

7) That's it. Your 'dload' folder is now ready to be transferred to the USB drive for flashing.

8) Attach your OTG-USB to your device and restart your device. While restarting keep pressing Volume UP & DOWN key simultaneously. Your phone will now enter into dload mode and will start flashing after verifying firmware.

9) Bingo! you have now fully working stock rom. (Bootloader locked, FRP Unlocked, E-recovery functional again)

Note: Before doing this operation make sure your USB drive is perfectly working and exFAT formatted. You can check your drive by H2testW on windows. In my case my first USB drive was faulty and that's why dload was giving me errors.

Hi, Please help me, My P20 PRO CLT-L29 is bricked during re-branding. FRP is locked and boot-loader is re-locked. I am stucked at recovery. Factory reset from recovery finishes successfully but still the device doesn't boot up. E-recovery shows "gettting package info failed." Tried DNS e-recovery method through firmware finder but the DNS is not working!
Is there any way to unbrick my device?

FINALLY SOLVED by flashing the firmware files through dload method via USB- OTG. You can search and download firmware files on https://androidhost.ru/search.html

Feel free to ask if you face any difficulties.

Hi I've just made my own attempt and it eventually worked like a charm. only one thing: In my case those subfolders name were CLT-L29_hw_eu and CLT-L09_hw_eu. It's important not to rename them. (I removed L09 as my model is L29) Firstly I renamed it to update_sd_CLT-L29_hw_eu and software update failed. I restored then the original name (and also deleted meta-inf folders) and volia worked like a charm :)!

*Once again thank You very much for Your help. It can be life saver in future :)

    Oops forgot to mention, exFAT.
