I'm just wondering... What would happen if you flash the DevEd files to your retail version?
I'm guessing a brick, but could you recover your retail device?

Actually I seem to remember it does not even get far enough to brick it gets stopped by a check of some sort.

I do know if you flash retail to dev the dev unit turns into a retail.

I've seen that an update caused a guy's DevEd to become a retail too. A pushed 4.4.4 from Verizon. I'm not sure on how true it is though.

It not only makes a dev edition become a retail version....you can't go back.

The dev units at the very least should get a tool. If verizon pushed an update to my dev unit turning it into a retail unit I would have the c service managers ass in a sling. And they would be sending me a new dev unit to replace the one they broke. With the dev units it should not be possible for the retail bootloader to be loaded or it should recognize the hardware dev bit and then unlock itself but no the dev units are an after thought made to placate the people crying about the locked bootloader and then they get treated like lepers by both Samsung and Verizon in that you may never get updated bootloader to run kit Kat or lollipop. You will have to make the old jellybean bootloader run the newer roms.

I ended up getting a Nexus 6 off Motorola's store. Complete vanilla Android. No lock bootloader. Frak Verizon and frak Samsung. Never again will I buy their hardware and never again will I buy a phone through Verizon. I'm sitting here with a doorstop of a Note III because I refuse to upgrade beyond Android 4.3 due to the horsecrap battery life issues in Stock Android post 4.3. I say doorstop because there are some Android Wear apps that won't install on 4.3. So yah. My previous phone was a Galaxy S3. They got lucky enough to find a work around for the bootloader. Not so much this time, and I refuse to gamble going forward. Unencrypted bootloader out of the gate or GTFO.

If your on 4.3 you got root and the ability to go up to nc2 4.4.2 then with safe strap load a nc4 base rom. Also I don't remember 4.3 being all that much better with battery life on mine.

I have the exact thought. Let me know how the M8 is.

---------- Post added at 10:12 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:07 AM ----------

I have been having the exact thought. Let me know how that works for 'ya.
Got the M8 (off ebay; got lucky in that it was cheap and in great shape). Updated OTA to stock 5.01 lollipop. Have a slim "grip" case on order (back really is slippery in your hand). Rooting it was fairly simple. Love it. I might wait on trying any custom ROMs as it is already pretty darn fast running stock 5.01 lollipop with sense 6 (I tend to run Nova with "faster than lightning" animation settings anyway). I can't use the m8 as my primary phone just yet due to requirements for the Samsung insight program, so still using my Note 3. But that program ends in 3 short weeks for me!

The Samsung insights program is a program where they offered some customers a galaxy note 3 to use for 6 months and then it was theirs to keep. You had to allow samsung to monitor your apps usage and other things by installing a program that does the monitoring for them. They didn't monitor personal data.

well....

If something like this were to work, it would be because there were MULTIPLE Petitions, all bombarding Verizon.. What are 1000 signatures, when there are hundreds of thousands out there using their hardware???

I updated OTA lollipop 5.0 this morning on my SM-N900V. They've opened the bootloader, it seems? It's available through Recovery. There's an option to boot to it.
