Signed but it's going slowly. So what happens when we get to 1000 signatures? Is that what we need just to get a response from them?
On another note, how can they legally restrict a open source operating system?
If you look at all the big players in the Linux world the only thing they have ever been able to charge for is their own proprietary documentation, it's only since smart phones and tablets that they can now suddenly restrict access.
I would think even if they say put a license agreement on their flavor of Linux OS, and on their own proprietary hardware, and said you can only use this if you agree to this license agreement that we made, that their license wouldn't mean a damn thing if it violates the underlying license that the base product is designed on.
I'm pulling up the Linux license now to look through it, it's been a long time since I've read it over but I don't think what any of these companies are doing is legal!
Easy. its At Asus discretion. Asus isn't obligated by law to provide device unlocked. It basically boils down to if they want to or not. Its perfectly legal. while petition sounds good on paper, it will have minimal influence on Asus though. its ultimately their decision. you have devices That have never been unlocked well after its life cycle ended. tablets and phones.
Really 300 owners are trying to move to fast. lol. this device just dropped. be glad you all were able to get root off a prime method. just sit back and enjoy root. which is better than stock. it took a few months before Asus finally unlocked the bootloader on the prime. Asus will more than likely unlock it but it'll be down the road. maybe in a couple months. plus I haven't seen any developers really talking about making roms for 300, except for one. that's the one who created the build.prop mod. So there's no real rush as the interest hasn't built up yet. this device needs to get into more peoples hand.
Like the saying goes, you have to crawl before you walk. 300 is little brother to prime. Prime would say, you trying to grow up too fast..lmfao. Seriously though, it'll come in due time. just have to be patient. Because last thing on Asus mind or priority list is unlocking the bootloader. When it does come, expect the same terms as with the prime. Unlocking bootloader will instantly void your warranty. how would they know? well as soon as you accept the terms for unlock tool to start doing its thing, your serial number is automatically uploaded to Asus and put on a blacklist for people who unlocked/voided warranties. they also put digital flags on device as another way to tell also. there is no way around this, no bypassing it, etc... unlocking will only come through their tool, if they decide to release one for 300. then when they do, unlocking is on their terms which you have to agree to in order to unlock.
Asus won't just release unlock tool at any random moment. alot of legalities are involved. after their legal team puts together the terms of agreement, then it will release. we already been through the this is not legal talk before. lol. It actually is legal. Unlocked bootloader isn't owed to anyone. Asus in no way is obligated to do so. its more of a favor by the manufacturer allowing further developement of the device. but it comes at a cost and that's voiding the warranty. no way around it. no cracking it. this tool and key is heavily encrypted. people with primes spent months trying to figure out how to crack it. its dead in the water now. plus Asus has yet to even release NV flash for prime. so bootloader is unlocked, but more like 3/4. NV flash is the last piece prime needs for completer true unlocking. NV flash will enable you to almost recover from any kind of brick. therefore allowing developers to take more risky adjustments and such.
while I do think they should unlock 300 sooner than later, I was just pointing out how it is.
I did support the cause though, just signed. #301 I believe. good luck!
