Hi

I've recently installed Philz kernel v5.00.5 XXLSZ-OXA in place of my stock XXLSZ-XEO kernel. Most of the time my Note works fine but every now and then it freezes (especially when using a demanding app). For a couple of seconds I can still hear my app in the background but I can't touch anything on the screen (capacitive buttons, home button and power button do not work either). After about 20-30 seconds Note reboots and bootloops at Samsung logo. Pressing and holding power button reboots Note again and it powers on correctly. This has never happened to me before on stock kernel but now I've experienced this issue at least 10 times in the last 7 days.
Is it safe to install different, newer version (like XXLT6) or is there any other solution that I just can't seem to find in this thread?

Thanks a lot
This is getting pretty ridiculous. Yesterday I've experienced 5 freeze&reboot crashes (2 of them while rotating screen in stock Messaging app). Maybe someone knows if any other kernel works properly with XXLSZ-based ROM?

/Data partition must be corrupted. Freezes and reboots will continue until its formatted unfortunately. It's a typical problem with stock JB Roms for the Note.
I've read your post about data corruption and /data backups before but not until it was already too late. I've never experienced any reboots like that on stock kernel so I wasn't in any hurry to back everything up.

I guess now I finally have a good reason to flash custom ROM, since I'm going to wipe /data anyway.

Thanks a lot

Ok, just did PhilZ kernel+root, and now if I want to flash some custom ROM like CyanogenMod/ Paranoid, does it support PhilZ? Or should I change kernel?
Sorry for the noobish question, but I really am new to this.

When you flash the chosen ROM it will replace the kernel with a kernel that is supplied in it.. The reason for using philz is so you can safely wipe before flash... If you want Phil's either choose a rom that has philz included. Or reflash Phil's for that ROM if philz has a compatible kernel for that ROM

I did just as You advised but after a day of no reboots I've experienced two reboots today. So we're back to square one - factory reset and custom ROM.
Then you should do a full wipe (system dalvik cache preload data) and flash the newest ROM. What shooey bo diidly doobey recommended was a possible fix. If it isn't working just do a full wipe and flash an LT5 or 6 ROM then philz again.
Don't restore anything...although you can backup some user apps with titanium backup...but don't restore data from any system apps

Why does it take 3 posts to answer the same question that was already answered. I don't get it.

I am on stock Lt5 Rom with latest Philz kernel for lt5 flashed, using my phone with root demanding apps without any problem for weeks.
Suddenly super Su demanded a binaries update, without being able to complete the update.
I discovered I had two superuser APPS :SuperSU and superusuario 1.0.1.8 by koushik dutta. No one of them let me update binaries. Root access lost.
I don't know how I got two superuser apps.
I un installed SuperSU, but was unable to un install 1.0.1.8.
I reflashed Philz kernel hoping that would re root Note and fix super user issues to no avail. Stuck without root and failing at upgrading binaries.
What can I Do? Why reflashing Philz rooted kernel doesn't help?
Many thanks in advance

Go to the supersu xda thread and flash his newest update zip in cwm
I think that may fix it. Post back.

Also, ensure you are not using my root blocking script from page 1
Some custom roms come with supersu in /preload: very bad idea from rom dev
Some rom auto-root on start: not a good idea too
Finally, with root explorer, clean remaining apps in /data/app and /system/app

Thanks for the response. I managed to install now jellybeer ROM on my girlfriends note.

I have another question just to be safe. If ever I am going to flash another ROM let us say a TW based or non CM based ROM. Do I need to flash the same XXLZ zip again to return to Phils safe kernel? Or is it safe to just wipe and flash the ROM. I'm honestly confused, because as far as I know this Jellybeer ROM included its own CM based kernel.

Any response would be greatly appreciated. Haha. Still experimenting with her phone. Though she's already delighted since I installed a Pink Colored CM10.1 Theme :) aaaah girls girls.

No. All CM10.1 kernels are 100% safe from brick bug. and you can install any rom you want through the CM10.1 recovery. just be sure to wipe /system /data /cache dalvik-cache and /preload before flashing a new rom.

PS- use the thanks button when people take the time to help.
