The phone wouldn't hold a charge so I swapped the battery with a new one and everything seemed ok, but now when I try to take a photo the phone shuts down and won't start until I plug it into the charger, the problem seems to happen with any camera app I tested (stock, gcam & Instagram) and not even flashing a different ROM fixed it (was using lineage and flashed the stock Oreo ROM using RDS lite).

Has anyone faced this issue?

I have faced this same issue its just ROM issue sometimes camera drain like 20% of charge in few clicks and this mostly happened to me on oreo and pie ROMs but Nougat ROMs are fine so check it on nougat ROM and i think your camera battery drain will be okay

Will try, i've been further testing and found out that the problem happens when the flash activates.

From where did you swap your battery? I was having the same rebooting issue at about 50% or below charge level. It worsened over time so it started rebooting as soon as there was an incoming call or I launched camera.

Replacing battery from moto support did the trick and the phone is fine now.

Some people also reported here (including a friend of mine with a Merlin i.e Moto G turbo) that the flash didn't light up, they had to press on the flash to make it work. This was due to swollen battery pushing the led out of contact with the main board.

Can you be sure the battery you replaced is genuine and new? Because this issue shouldn't be happening with a new battery.

i had the same problem when i was on stock MM . even my phone used to shutdown automatically when it get drains to 25%-20% . now this problem is solved after i shifted to lineage os 14.1 with squid kernel . i think it happens as the battery gets old .
