I live on the coast. Ocean, waterways, marshes, lot's of green spaces. I've always taken a lot of panoramic pictures. The panorama pictures are horrible. All other parts of the camera I give an 8+. The pictures are unusable. So bad that I literally am not sure about getting another Nexus. No response whatsoever from the company on what should be a doable software fix. Makes me worried that they don't give a crap about fixing major bugs.

Is it just me or they've broken auto HDR+ detection in Google Camera 3.2? It is now always enabled for me until I shake the camera a lot. That frustrates me, HDR+ previously was only kicking in when appropriate - in low light or against the lighting source.

This is the very first time I had to revert the app and disable auto-update. Camera 3.1 auto HDR+ works just great. I also understood the logic of (allegedly bugged) auto HDR+ - it kicks in once camera got the focus, taking the laser one into account you have very little time until HDR+ gets enabled. I posted feedback via the app as well as left a review on the Play Store page. I'm hoping it's just an oversight and is not an intended change, otherwise I don't want to get a Nexus again.

Got latest update but still bad macro shot experience.. Wondering if I have a faulty unit or is this common?
I'm wondering the same thing. I compared with my Nexus 6 and the older device focuses on macro shots the way it should. The 6P is on focus for a second but goes back out of focus almost right away. A little annoying.

Is this software or hardware?

Excellent photo quality. This is the only "phone camera" I have ever used that the pictures still look great when cropping, all the others look like oil paintings and over processed up close.---From an amateur photographer's eye.

Closer than 3 inches, it will not focus on a subject..I think it's a hardware limitation.

Chicago
A few pics I have taken with my 6P. My dog was walking quickly in the one pic...froze her with minimal blur. The city shots are actually on 2 separate days of the Willis Tower in downtown Chicago covered by fog/clouds, the one pic the tower is barely visible.

I've found one pet peeve about this camera. It doesn't do well with shadows. I've taken a numbers of pictures where the picture is unnecessarily dark in certain areas of the photo. If it's a bright sunny day but light isn't hitting a particular part of a scene forget it. It makes it even darker. Kind of getting annoying. HDR+ doesn't help and neither does any other modes. I think it is a hardware limitation.

6p is known to produce a bit darker pictures compared to competition, but they are more realistic looking. And no, its not hardware limitation and it was intended this way, many phones use same camera module as 6p(one example would be htc 10) and while they produce brighter pictures, quality and dynamic range fails compared to 6p.
