Full quality uploads?

When I wanted to check the photo quality on the big screen, I realised that the uploads to Google Photos are compressed. The settings menu only offers the options compressed & unlimited or uncompressed & limited to your 15 GB quota.

Anyone else noticed this?

Sidenote: I tried to take photos of a sunrise on a cloudy day, and the quality wasn't nearly as good as expected after the raving reviews. What's more, the difference between normal, hdr+ and hdr+ enhanced are, at least on the P2's own screen, absolutely marginal. I'm a bit confused about this.
Anyone else could try to replicate this?

I'll have another go as soon as a sunrise presents itself.

TV screen shot

Anyone have these strange bands when they take a pic of their television screen? They come and go depending on the focal point (usually go away when focused off screen). I never saw these with my S6. Maybe it's just my tv? Maybe the camera is so good it's picking up something with the refresh?

This usually happens when the shutter speed go higher than the screen refresh rate 1/50 or higher.

Ok thanks makes sense. There's no way to change the sutter speed on the google camera that i've found or have i missed something?
I think if you click around on the object and the auto focus might change shutter speed depending on the conditions.

Otherwise, unfortunately you have to live with it, people have been taking photos of televisions for decades and there has always been the screen door/refresh rate effect.

As long as you are logged into Google Photos on your phone with your Google account, which should be by default, when you go into Back up & sync within the app you should see a gray box that says: "Photos & videos uploaded from your pixel before 1/16/21 get unlimited free storage at Original quality." In other words you don't have the option of choosing compressed or uncompressed on the Pixel 2. That option will show up on any other phone you are using Google Photos on regardless if you are using/own a Pixel 2.

Hi guys, although I'm pretty happy with photo quality from the stock app sometimes I need to lock focus or change exposure time. Coming from V20 where manual mode was massive and I miss it a lot. Can you recommend some third party app with good photo quality and rich features? I saw Open Camera but it has not been updated for a long time now...
Here's some pics I took with pixel2, nothing special to be honest, all took with auto/portrait mode.

What settings are people using for their camera...particular for general everyday use? I am quite satisfied with default...except when using the zoom. Anything more than 0 zoom introduces a lot of pixelation and lack of detail. I'm assuming it is digital zoom only but it is almost not usable for me at all...especially compared to the HTC One M8 that it replaced (where the camera resolution was it's weakness at the time). Am I doing something wrong or should zoomed photos at least be decent? Thanks in advance for any tips/recommendations.

Just a few winterland photos, taken just for get a clear picture on how the camera module in the Pixel 2 can handle bright light sources that "collides" with the sensor.

Even though the aperture is fixed and non-tweakable (lucky SGS9 owners for this feature, damnit) I have to say that the camera in my Pixel 2 impresses more and more on me. Those shots is a solid proof (at least for me) on that Google have made some incredible smart and bloody futureproof design choices when creating the software algorithms that is powering this beast on the camera side.

I really hope that the Pixel 3 will take the same route and double and fine tune it to perfection!

Try shooting without zoom, then crop the result in Google Photos to get the view you want. You may end up with a 1 Megapixel image, but in my experience it's likely to be much more satisfactory than if the same 1 MP image had been resampled up to 12 MP, which is what "digital zoom" does. Of course, you may find it doesn't work for you, but I'm usually happy with the results.
