Also, the HDR mode is literally broken in this phone, 90% of the time I get better shots on Auto, and HDR mode always crushes blacks in almost every scenario I use it, so I stopped using it completely and trust Auto. (This maybe has to do with the monochrome sensor information, since you always get perfect exposures with the monochrome sensor, you probably never gonna need the HDR mode by itself..)
the updated night mode (4 seconds one) seems to be a better HDR, if you want to wait 4 seconds that is

but the google camera port's HDR+ works for me and it "seems" to give better HDR results than default camera's hdr. I get better detail in the darker areas but the color is off to me, but since I can't see certain shades of color, I don't know how "off" I am. It's really mostly less vibrant for a color, a photo editor might be able to bring back the color but I don't do this either.

Well the problem there is that I am not quite sure what exactly that new night mode is, I personally just think its just the same night mode but a bit better, but NOT AIS stabilized like the P20 Pro.

From all the people that claim to have gotten this new night shot mode and posted pics, their pics looks like ****, their normal auto pics even look better sometimes, and the "handheld" night shots look blurry and ****. So either they are lying and didn't get the new mode, or Huawei is lying to us by saying this is the same mode as the P20 Pro, which is also possible.

There is definitly an issue with how the MATE 10 software modifies pictures.
I do often have the painting effect and the low-light shot are not on par with other flagships.
The thing is that, sometimes, I do get astounding shots, but i do notice a heavy load of treatment anyway.
I haven't experienced a lot on manual mode yet.

In day light its amazing for mate 10..
Have u tired lowering the resolution i got better results with 6m ..
With regular 8m its like a wet photo..if thats proper English
I just got an update I'll install it n see if theres a diff

Here's an example of mine, 4 pictures taken during the day and at night (same scene). It uses the new night mode, auto mode, hdr mode and the hdr+ from the google camera app port. They all looks good to me. I don't know what to judge to tell which one is "better".

But the night mode being AIS stablized, it seems like it to me because I tried using manual mode and the same 4 seconds for shutter speed, and it was really blurry so I didn't include it as sample image.

if someone could point out things between the photos to show why one would be "better" so I can learn what to look for next time, it would be much appreciated. Then I can start using the right mode for at least these two scenarios.

edit: trying to find free host for the original sized image, 53mb :( until then I included the smaller picture below

Imgur is free you just an account and you can keep the photos almost forever there and in high quality. Send me a pm or reply here when you do it so i can examine the photos.

Also please please when you upload the big image, try to post the exif data (ISO, shutter) for each of the pic so I can understand the modes more.

An easy way to test the nighmode update is to take a picture of a flower up close at night. The lack of AI stabilization would be easy to spot.

I tried imgur, it got stuck at the end... I waited almost 3 hours for it to finish... I'll try again this weekend when I have time

uhm... exif data? how do I do that? in fact, what is exif data? I know the gps location is in the image somehow, no clue how to remove it so I didn't want to post the images directly to keep location off internet. I let the app decide the iso/shutter speed/etc so nothing was done in manual mode

edit: I figured this out I think, I took a screenshot of the phone after pressing the i button in the gallery app

I'll try this too, do I do it when it is completely dark? As in by moon/star light only? Or can I have a porch light on? what about flash?

Night shot mode doesn't allow flash.
I would do it without any extra light helping out.

Yes, night shot should be tested in lower light conditions than the street lamp shot you did here. If auto has enough light to shoot at ISO lower than 1600 then it's not low light enough. It has to be dark to show the night shot mode properly.

Also you can seriously just upload each pic individually on imgur and post the links to each image separately, it maybe gets stuck because you have one HUGE pic that's very large..

Ok, I got a dark photo of a flower, I had to do it inside but I turned off the lights, window let some in though. The ISO on the auto mode was less than 1600, but the night mode was at 3200 ISO.

I don't know if the AIS stabilization happened or not, it does look a bit blurry on the background as I look away from the center of the photo where I had the camera focused

here's the full photo of it and not the reduced size one I attached

the camera can be much better through software tweaks. Gcam proofs it in portrait mode. Unfortunately all the bad stuff about our camera is still bad in p20. the camera is not made for taking pictures of people, unless they are really ugly and need a lot of make up. And the bokeh is not much better than on cheap chinese phones.
And of course they could add something like googles hdr+. Samsung did it and it helped with dynamik range.

i guess 80 % of phone camera improvement is made with software nowadays. normally you don't get any of those on the same phone (except Pixel/Nexus, my 6p still holds up with modern phones and often beats the mate 10 pro). But at least we are getting some of them. Better then LG, HTC, Samsung...
Yeah, the future of improving image quality on smartphones are definitely driven by good software! That's how the Pixel gets so good result with decent, but not outstanding hardware.

But it can be taken much further. Check out this work on enhancing night shots with AI: http://web.engr.illinois.edu/~cchen156/SID.html

Atm you need a beefy computer to run it (the code can be downloaded on the page) and a little python skills, but I don't see why it should not be implemented on phones in the near future. It is the training of the AI that requires the heavy hardware. After it is done I think it should be feasible to run on mobiles with dedicated APUs (like the Huaweis).

I wouldn't mind seeing this on my Mate 10 in a future update! :D
