I didn't buy a Pixel? My point is, if I don't like the display why would I buy it. Do I expect the display to magically get better, no, that's insane. Similar to a car with awesome specs but is ugly in design. The Pixel to me becomes ugly when I look at the display. I know it has excellent specs and a great camera, but I can't get past the display. Therefore I'm not gonna give it a shot, because I know the display will not get better. That's the premise of my car analogy, and yes I've test driven well speced cars even though I didn't love the way it looked. Never have the specs won out yet. Luckily I can always seem to find a balance of specs and design that works for me, which is why I bought the Galaxy S9+. Good balance of specs and design.

And yet here you are, in a pixel 2 forum and thread, still posting on and on about it.

Because I can, and so can you and all the other folks that have anything to say about the Pixel and its quality. Get over it. I'm interested to see if the product gets better, that's why I'm still here. So far the answer is it hasn't. I'm also posting in the Galaxy S9+ forum too if that makes you feel better. Have a nice day.

We should troll the S9 and S9+ threads right? It's got crushed blacks and touchscreen dead zones issues apparently.

:D

dude when i was researching the Pixel 2 XL - whether to buy or not - I of course came across the screen issues and I was concerned. I did go to a best buy and a verizon store to see if the stories were legit. I did see blue tint on the screens but noticed that when using the phone it was ok so I wanted to give the phone a shot beyond tinkering an hour in a store with them, but out in the world for a week. So I did.

I mean I had read post after post from folks railing against the Pixel 2 XL screen as utter garbage, repeatedly. Not just for blue tint but for doing anything with the screen. People were already on their 4th return already and more. It was a giant to-do. I was not going to buy one but I am so glad I just decided to try for myself.

I've had the phone for 3 months now and haven't noticed a single goddamn issue with the screen in regards to blue tint or black crush or banding or anything. Zero. I do have blue tint when turning the phone at an angle, but it's non-existent in real world usage. I'm a pretty OCD guy when it comes to my gear and so I can see where some of these overly anal guys come from but I managed to just let it go and enjoy the actual phone. I have had an issue with the phone, and that is about 1 in 3 calls that I try to swipe down for to decline, takes like 2-3 swipes to do so. Screen-wise? All good.

Best phone I've every used and I've had an android phone since the Nexus 1, and upgrade about every 1.3 years. Can't wait for the Pixel 3XL to come out now. And I hope it doesn't tint pink/red like a lot of Samsung OLED's do, I prefer if they stick with the blue :cowboy:

Yeah when I first got it in October I totally noticed the blue shift. It was a big change coming from my 5X. I figured well I have it so let me actually use it and see if it would annoy me enough to return it. Obviously it didn't. I probably didn't care about the shift anymore after 5 days. You really don't see the crushed blacks? That's the one thing I really notice because I have Adaptive Brightness on set to 35% and in a very dark room it'll lower it enough to get crushed. But in regular room lighting it's fine.

I looked for it in the beginning but didn't see it. Post a link to a video or two that have it and let me try again. I'm curious.

To guarantee it for me, I lower the screen to something like 10-15% with the Adaptive Brightness off, go to a social media feed, and scroll to any pictures that has dark areas (hair, clothes, etc).
I don't see anything like that at 5% brightness or 10% brightness with adaptive off. I scrolled through pictures and watched videos focusing on darker areas.

After a lot of deciding I ended up going for Huawei Mate 10 Pro, out of the google phones, only one I never had issue with was the nexus 4,my nexus 6 had to be replaced due to WiFi problems and my Pixel XL had issues with BT. Then seeing the problems were still occurring on the 2 and with the display issues I wasn't willing to spend £900 on a flagship device with all the issues. Luckily I got the Mate Pro for £529 and traded in my Nexus 6 (got more for that than what was being offered for my Pixel XL 128gb) so paid £429 cash, and I've been happy with its performance.

That Huawei P20 Pro though. After my experience with the Nexus 5X, I'm always going biggest and best.

It's simple, if the blue tint at angles really bugs you, don't get the Pixel 2 XL or LG V30. I have two friends with the Pixel 2 XL and their screens look great at normal viewing angles, and the blue shift is noticeable at 45 degrees or more. One is an October build with a slight graininess, and the other is a November build that looks great. Neither are at Note 8 or S9 standards, but are great. If having a perfect screen is your top priority, go Samsung. If you want the latest and cleanest software experience, go for the Pixel 2 XL. I've seen far fewer complaints about recent batches, so maybe LG improved their screen quality control.

At this point, it's hard to say whether the Galaxy S9+ or Pixel 2 XL is the better phone. Each excels in different ways. Hardware wise, the S9+ wins hands down, but the software experience on the Pixel 2 XL is unmatched.

For those who are curious, this is my Galaxy S8 Plus vs. my Pixel 2 XL. Head on and at angle.

As you can see, the P2XL has a warmer display than the S8+ looking directly at it, once we move to an angle both phones do color shift. The S8+ shifts to a more warm pinkish, and the Pixel 2 XL shifts to a cooler blue. Almost like they swap places.

To me, it's a 100 percent non-issue and I never notice it on either phone on a day to day use.

    Honestly,

I don't understand all the energy being put into the what if, and how's this, and should I do this (or the petty bickering either, but that's another topic).....

My 2 XL should be delivered Thursday or Friday.

When I get it, this is what I'm going to do:

    set it up,
    play with it,
    listen to the speakers,
take some pics (view them at diff angles (not sure if I'll use mils or degrees, but they will be angles)
play a few graphic intensive games,
Try to root if something becomes available.

    Here comes the best part:

THEN, I will make a decision to keep it, wait for a software update, wait for a new batch to get built and the problems to go away then RMA it, or I'll return it and ride my 6P running Pure Nexus for a while longer.

Giving and reading other's reviews are good insight, but If you are worried by all the "bad reviews" you are reading about the display, the sound, the blue tint; either wait until YOUR device shows up and follow my handy dandy do-it-yourself decision guide, or hit the local cell store and play with one for 5-10 minutes.

DO NOT let someone else's observations make your decisions for you, add your own observation first.

You'd never marry someone because of a review, why buy a $1,000 device that way? Check that stuff out on your own! (that wicked logic is FREE)

And above all, interact with each other respectfully and with the intent of being helpful. The rude, bickering, and insults really are unnecessary. Be helpful or be silent.

Yes, I'll be posting a review once I've gone through my 2 XL, but please, add to your own experience before making your decisions.

    Peace :D

Been using mine for a few hours now next to my original Pixel XL. Thoughts on the main three screen "issues" below.

    Colors

The 2 XL does have colors that are much more muted out of the box than most devices these days. Is it distractedly bad? Not in the slightest. There's nothing wrong with the colors from a technical standpoint. That said, I do prefer a more saturated display. The good news is the colors look almost identical the original XL when sRGB is switched on in Developer Options, so that's likely a fairly straightforward software fix that we'll hopefully get. Even if Google never issues a software fix, I'm fine with the sRGB colors. If you use it for awhile on its own, you get used to it. If I had set the phone up completely apart from any other device, I would have noticed the colors are more muted, but it wouldn't be as obvious without all of the discussion around it and a direct comparison to the original Pixel XL. Not a deal breaker for me.

    Blue Tint

The blue tint when tilting is very real and can be very distracting. When you're looking straight at the screen, which will be most of the time, all is well. But even just a slight tilt brings out a noticeably blue tint. If you use a stand or a case with a kickstand that puts the phone slightly off from being a direct line of sight, you're going to see it. There are likely some software tweaks that could be implemented, but it's doubtful this will ever completely go away as it seems to be hardware-related. This is something I definitely would have noticed quickly even if there had not been discussion about it online. It's impossible to miss, especially on white backgrounds (like the setup screens). If anything about the display is going to be a deal breaker for me, it will be this.

    Graininess

Yes, on light backgrounds at very low brightness, there is a sort of graininess that can be seen. Once you see it, you can't unsee it. But I'm not sure if it's something I would have noticed quickly (or at all) if I wasn't looking for it. Likely hardware-related, but software could potentially help a bit. Not a deal breaker for me.

Overall, the screen isn't as bad as many are making it out to be. It's not as good as it should be for this price range, but one of the major three "issues" comes down to preference, not a lack of quality with the panel. Another (graininess) isn't a big deal to me. The third is what has given me a bit of uncertainty. I need to give it a few days of use before I decide. I'm still extremely happy with the original Pixel XL, and I know I'd be just fine holding onto it for another year. That said, I have a feel the other upgrades to the 2 XL (water resistance, front-facing speakers, upgraded internals, and most importantly that camera) will keep me on board.

As for recommendations, you really need to look at it yourself and decide how you feel about it.

I'm treating the blue shift as a privacy filter, if your trying to peep my phone good luck! [emoji6]
