Pixel XL and I moved from Grandfathered VZ Unlimited to new Unlimited, here's why

Well I have had my Verizon unlimited for god knows how long and now that all the carriers are coming back with their own version of unlimited data plans I finally gave my plan a review.
I have had 2 lines with big red, both with unlimited data. My wife (who is Canadian) and I travel to Canada a lot to see her family and we live in L.A. so we vacation in Mexico.
I use the Pixel XL 128GB and she has an iPhone something or other.
I use on average 35GB a month and she uses about 11GB on average. When I travel with family it can go over 70 GB as everyone who is Canadian with us uses my phone as their hotspot.
I was using the trick to pop the sim out and back in then initiate the hotspot just fine. Heck I have the key on my keychain for it.

In the end, using our own unlimited data in Mexico & Canada, calling to and from those countries, my wife easily using the native 10GB hotspot on her iPhone toy, and having HD Streaming no counting against "unlimited data", plus now having unlimited voice call (we had 2000 minutes before) while it saving me now $70 a month was hard to say no to.

I'm sure I can keep my data usage below 30GB a month if I actually use wifi more often and download my torrents in a more sensible way (not through my phone willy nilly) Heck I have had 1 month where I hit 1.1 TB as I used my phone to supply internet for the entire house for a couple months just because it was faster than my home internet service.

So in the end, this just made practical sense as it's easier for my wife and we don't have to watch our data when traveling in N. America. And $70 a month buys a lot of cigars.

I just worry about the 22 GB and losing priority. Have a hard time believing they are not gonna throttle or "proriritize" differently than they say. I have zero issues with my unlimited now and never lose any speed...

It's on my mind as well but I think I used my phone in a way where I just didn't care if I was on wifi or not. This past 1 month period my data was a lot lower than normal because I actually used the wifi in my office and at home which I normally don't do. I guess your lifestyle will determine if it's worth it. $70 a month difference made it worth it for us to switch.

Also keep in mind that you can only use 10gb of data through hotspot before they begin throttling. You can get around this by using pdanet or a similar hotspot app.

Yeah I took that into consideration. Now my wife can just press a button on her iPhone to get her hotspot going and as for me I know the work arounds so I'm fine with it.

this is true
however
using pdanet still uses data
so if u go over 22gb of data usage in a billing cycle
u will ill be "deprioritized" for the remainder of the billing cycle
which could negatively impact ur data speeds
and hence ur pdanet speeds
vzn keeps saying that cell data doesnt get throttled
only hotspot will get throttled after 10gbs/mo usage
ill believe it when i see it

if u have the old school unlimited "nationwide" plan
beware
if u use >=200gbs of data in a billing cycle
u will get booted from that plan
full stop
just happened to me without any warning
in fact prob worth u calling into vzn
to confirm wut the data usage limit is before u get kicked

That's allot of data dude. I don't think I have ever gone over 50. I been thinking about getting on that new plan from my grandfathered one. But something scares me about it. There's got to be some kind of catch. I dunno lose my discount to. But It would save me 40 bucks. Did they let you get on the new plan?

Just throwing this out there since the topic is still active, I've used 37gb so far with a week left until it starts another month.
Speed test is reporting my down at 28-33mbps, which is what I got when I first started the plan. I haven't touched any of my hotspot because I don't need to.

that sounds solid. have u noticed any slowdown after going past the 22gb threshold? and r u using during/in "high congestion" times/areas?

I'll be in Macon today, and I'll run a few speed tests and a download around 3. That's when most schools are getting out and people get off around here.

In speaking to a Verizon tech because I wanted the full story this is what happens when you go over 22GB (It will be increased soon I hear).
Once you hit 22GB you are no longer on the "Priority" list to connect to 4G. So if you are home, at work, the movies, you will still connect perfectly fine with ZERO throttle.
If you are at a Football game, Concert, somewhere with a dumb amount of people, then you will be down the list to connect to 4G but once you are connected you still are not throttled.
This was my deciding factor and it seems now I am saving $81 this month having switched both my grandfathered unlimited plans to this new unlimited plan. I have used about 28GB this cycle so far with 17 days left to go. I live in L.A. And have not had issues.

thx poets. ive heard the same from vzn cust svc reps but remain skeptical. good to hear that u havent had any issues post-22gbs. i also live in la, so ur positive exp thus far is great to hear :)

fyi i was able to get vzn to price match tmobiles current unlimited plan cost. took more than 1 call, but worth it :) basically $100/mo for 2 lines. that includes line access fees and taxes. that match was for a 12 mo period - thereafter, the line access fees and taxes are charged normally.

Boop boop, commenting again.

I hit 40gb. My connection has slowed drastically all across the board. Whether I'm at the house, work, mall, my connection speed is **** now.

It has slowed to a whopping .8mbps, multiple test thought the day all stick with the same results. I'll check again when it gets dark.

I have the new UDP and I was at 80 gigs in a billing cycle. Never was throttled. I will say it depends on where you live. If you live in a big city then more of a chance to get throttled than if you live more out in the county

thx for the update... was afraid of that... fckn vzn and their doubletalk smh... which apps do u use to check connection speeds?

---------- Post added at 01:36 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:35 AM ----------

If that happens to me I will rip Verizon a new one. They specifically said there is no throtteling, only delayed 4G connections if you are no longer on the priority list.[/QUOTE
wut else did "they" say (pulp fiction reference)

That sucks to hear. I was also considering moving from the grandfathered plan to the new one. Idk why it's so scary to give it up..
just as a warning - i was told by vzn that if u go over 200 gbs of data usage in a billing cycle, then u will automatically get kicked from ur grandfathered plan. but worth double checking on ur own as who knows wut the real story is.

prob a dumb suggestion, but here goes - would we be able to circumvent the throttling by using an internet speed booster app? i dunno the specifics behind them...

I use speedtest by ookla, and I run it on 3 different servers to attempt to eliminate variances and achieve an average.

As far a internet connection speed booster, the only thing I can see actually helping would be all the network tweaks in the "lspeed" app.

My speed has since came up a little, but not by much. Still hanging out around the 1-2mbps range. For reference I live in Warner robins, sometimes traveling to macon, Georgia. It's nothing like Atlanta but it's a little crowded.

I said it before and I'll say it again. If you live in a large city then the chances of being throttled is a lot greater to happen than if you live in the middle of no where. I am on the new UDP and last month I hit over 80 gigs and no throttling happened. As I live in the middle of no where so not as many people as compared to a larger city. Now I am sure if I went to Richmond va I could almost bet ya I would of been. But you knew what you was getting in to when taking the new UDP that they might throttle ya so don't get all mad that it happened to you.
