I agree, it's a great phone. The 2nd unit I had was perfect (prior to the white stripe on the right side issue). The typical screen flicker scenario goes like this:
1: Put the phone on charge as I go to bed
2: Wake up and grab the phone to check on the happenings overnight.
- I leave the phone on charge during my morning email / news check up since it's a lot of screen on time, and I don't want to start the day down on battery when I don't have to.
3: Since the bedroom is fairly dark still, the screen brightness is quite low, and thus.. the flicker.
- The flicker in my case happens:
* with or without night mode
* with or without adaptive brightness
* up to about 1/3 brightness of the screen.

While I agree, it's a niche issue... I experience it literally every morning. I can unplug the phone for a few minutes and put it back on, and the flicker is gone for some short period of time (proportional to the time off-charge).

The other part is I know a phone without this flicker issue existed ( 2nd unit I had ), and should still be possible.

Maybe I've been lucky, but I've not experienced any significant lens flare. Good luck with it.

Is the screen flicker really that big of a deal? I've had my XL since launch and have never noticed the issue... because I've never created the scenario to cause it. I don't leave my phone plugged in at 100%. This is the LEAST of all worries here. You should be more concerned about the camera flare, if anything. And Google is probably going to fix neither of these issues, so just enjoy the phone. It's really great.

This is precisely why flicker is an issue for me. I check news, social media, couple of YouTube videos from my subs before starting work day. This can easily extend into an hour+ of screen on time. So phone is always connected to charger at that time. And brightness higher than 10% hurts my eyes in my room.
The day which follows is hectic work day for the phone. So it is a real issue for me and can't live with the flicker.

I think this is one of the reasons behind almost non existent new sale stock of 128gb pixel XL worldwide, and all orders being back ordered till Feb end of even March.

It is a hardware issue which is affecting more than normal amount of XL units. So I returned my unit for full refund for now. Might buy it again later. Settled for 3T 128gb for now. But miss that sharp screen and camera.

An hour of screen time is not going to reduce the battery that much... maybe 10% at most with brightness levels like that. You guys are worrying too much about keeping your battery charged. Do you really not have access to a car charger or power outlet at your work? Maybe you'll say you don't want to plug in there... okay, fine. Just try a day without leaving the phone plugged in during your morning browsing. Unless you typically end the day in the red, you will have enough battery life to last the day.

Browsing for an hour, socially media heavy sites takes more than 10% from the battery.
I travel light. I don't carry charger it battery pack with me. I also need to use phone as WiFi hotspot or GPS navigator at times during the day.

Even after taking the phone off the charger right before I leave the home, I am down to below 20% by the end of the day.

Even if we discount all this, the phone costs more than $1000 here. I am not going to live with an expensive phone with hardware flaw which should not exist after paying that much money for it. Period.

I was going to live with the lens flare as it is not a big deal to me. But not this.

That's good considering the lens flare isn't a defect. I agree the flicker is an issue. It sucks to get a replacement only to know there's a good chance that it will happen again. There's some small problems with the pixels and what I feared would happen is happening just like the Nexus phones. They were created to showcase the Android platform, not the device. Every update only improved the software. While some bugs were fixed the device itself was never upgraded. Now the pixel is badass, I love the device. Battery life is phenomenal. But there's a few small things that could be improved. We know the internals are similar to the HTC 10 which boasts a great audio experience. I know we are limited due to the speaker on the pixel. But we should be able to achieve the same experience via headphones. AptX support could be added as well. The screen can achieve a much higher brightness level via HBM. This is only accessible via root which some of us don't want to do. I would love this since I live in the Sunshine state.
None of these will ever be added to enhance the pixel experience. There's more little things here and there that Google could do but won't. Instead were getting updates to the software to make Android better across the board. Just like I did when I had a Nexus. Now I wouldn't trade my pixel for a Nexus but I understood that there was a Pixel team that was separated from the Android OS team

I just experienced the exact same issue under the same situation. I restarted my phone and the flickering disappeard, but I'm worried :S

Yup, I can confirm this: I've been facing the screen flicker issue on my Pixel XL since I originally purchased the phone back in October 2016 (I'm on my 2nd replacement device, 3rd overall) - and the screen flicker issue is *finally* gone with the 7.1.2 Beta update. Sigh.

Just ran into this with a half day old XL. Waited a month to get it so I doubt it's old production stock. I am changing from a normal size pixel that never had the issue.

I've this problem with my Pixel XL, with the febraury patch update.
But I see that a lot of users have this problem, do you think that it is a software bug?

Yup - because I've had this issue for the last 3-4 months now, and 2 replacement devices couldn't solve the problem. Now with the 7.1.2. build (NPG05E) it's not happened again - the screen does not flicker after the charge has reached a full 100%.

I didn't notice the screen flickering on beta, but my 5ghz wifi was garbage, and my Bluetooth was worse. I got a second warranty exchange device because of the screen flicker, with the extra added bonus of my charging port wearing out. I happened to get a pixel from Verizon through warranty exchange that I was able to unlock the bootloader with, so I installed the Elemental X kennel and haven't seen the screen flicker since. I'm not sure if it's a hardware or software issue at this point.

So I have this problem too.
Should I be worried? Should I not use my phone while it's charging?
Should I get it replaced...?
Can I continue using it normally?
