I just got the problem recently (2 days ago), I noticed it always shutdown (at least once) after recharge, then it wouldn't have no problem until the next recharge. Didn't have the problem in my first 2 weeks... phone is unrooted.

Not yet (and hopefully never). I got the phone about 10 days ago though. I'm also not sure of the manufactures date. Any ideas on where I can check. perhaps it's a batch issue.

Having same issue, and have been for weeks. Running cog 2.3b6. I'm going to attempt to clean off my battery connections and drain/reset battery data with rom manager and see what happens.

Will report back.

I've been using it for 3 months with root and rom switching and never had a shutdown issue.

45%-55%-ish. It makes you wonder what's up when half those polled are having shutdowns. I voted never but the first week I had the Captivate it randomly shutdown three times on one day but not since. In that case it did it successively after powering down & back up and then removing the battery. Since that day it’s been rock solid...even GPS.

It begs the question, why the big disparity? Further, why do some have such big problems with GPS and some don’t? Interesting...

Return it if it shuts off..

For anyone wondering if the issue is typical of all Captivates:
I'm on my fourth one...

First one No GPS period, bricked it trying to flash the ROM (had the newer version that disabled download and recovery boot up). Returned it before 30 days were up…

Second one lost due to a night of drunken debauchery… But it had the EXACT same problems as the first one AND it shut off on its own all the time, which the first one did not do… It would only shut down if I had it at or near full charge though… If I kept the battery around 75% or less no shut downs at all, 80% or more and it would shut down every few hours.

Third Captivate came through insurance and was an older release so download and recovery worked, but the touch screen had dead spots, which is worse than Chinese Water Torture when trying to dial a phone number or text somebody…

Fourth Captivate was an insurance replacement for #3 and this baby is flawless…. Rooted, Cognition, sideload, all work like a charm thanks to the awesome XDA tutorials. It was worth the wait. Thanks god I lost #2!

I never had random shutdowns until I started running custom Froyo ROMs. I started out with DG's AOSP Dev beta 3 which ran beautifully for a few weeks and then the shutdowns began randomly; once while I was driving around and then almost regularly every night (I don't charge overnight). Switched to Spaceman's AOSP a week ago and the shutdowns continued nightly. Decided to give Cognition's latest (2.3b6) a chance and so far it's been 48 hours without a single hiccup!

Wow, that’s a whole lotta bad luck there.

It’s interesting that there is such a disparity as to what causes random shutdowns. I’ve read that leaving it to charge all night will cause random shutdowns. I’ve read both low and high battery level is associated with shutdowns (I kinda think the actual level at the shutdown is a coincidence...of course I’ve been wrong before). Then there are the programs that reduce processor power when it’s idle. And, then there is the non-rooted, stock OS with the random shutdowns...this is the weird one. It seems as if there is something different about certain phones. Is there a way to determine the location of manufacture? I’ve seen DirecTV receivers that were manufactured in a certain location that had more issues then others of the same models. Unless they’re all manufactured in the same factory then that’s probably not a potential cause.

Well...some random thoughts about random shutdowns. :D

I had random shutdowns about twice a day. It started about 6 weeks after I got the phone. I tried everything to fix it with no luck. Finally took my phone into the service center and they swapped it out on the spot. No more random shutdowns...at least not since I got the new phone a week ago. It's a hardware issue period

I am having this problem right now with a new Captivate that was replaced due to my old one being stolen.

I am going to be taking it in to exchange it since I am convinced it is a hardware issue having to due with charging/USB charger.

It is rooted and I did have a custom ROM on it, but flashed back to stock and still having the problem. It is only 3 days old.

It will not have a problem if the charge is like 75-80%. But as soon as you charge it to full charge, it will do it if you leave it alone longer than 15 minutes.

So, after reading all of the other posts and playing around with it; I am sure it is not anything to do with any apps, ROM's, or something I have done to it.

Back to the store....Argggg.

Never mind. Just had a shutdown. At least I got a good three days out of it with no other problems. One perk of using the latest Cog: battery life is awesome! But I'll be calling repair on Monday to get my phone replaced. Current device is 1007, hopefully they send me a 1010 as it seems most people aren't having problems with those.

I have some ramdom turn off. It hapened a lot about two weeks agi, up to 4 times a day. Then after that week, just one or two per week. It does not make sense and seems there is no solution. My phone is std and no root and no other changes for now.

Add me to the list of "more than once per day". Had mine rooted the day I got it, then flashed cog a few days later. Worked awesome for a week and a half, but then started getting random shutdowns all the time (5x or more per day sometimes). Did the one-click back to stock, then flashed latest cog. Still had trouble.

Finally gave up and went back to 100% stock. It was trouble free for 2 days, then it started acting up again. Right before I started having shutdown issues again on the stock rom, I set an alarm for the first time, and I did a full charge for the first time since re-flashing.

I just deleted the alarm, I'm going to leave it on the charger overnight and see if it misbehaves tomorrow. Either way I'll probably be contacting wirefly customer support to see if I can get an exchange going. It's a bummer too, the gps on this one worked perfectly.

i've been having this problem since day one and my 30 days period is up on this thursday! keep alive works well except that it drains the battery until it deactivates at the set percentage which is fine. att only wanted to send a replacement battery and cable....i said no...they said they have nothing in their database about the random shutdown and only offered a refurb replacement...just as everyone else has mentioned.

called amazon wireless today....no hassle, they're sending me a new replacement tomorrow overnight....then i get another 30 day period to be able to return or exchange it again. keeping fingers crossed that this new one will be fine....

UPDATE: Got my new replacement the next day....1010 model.....no problems!!!!!!
