Hi, can someone who has the official Desire HD pouch please take a photo of its edges so I can compare mine to it?

I have seen people say theirs is real leather and mine is most certainly not - it smells of leather but the shiny edges which merge directly into the 'leather' prove it is not. Not sure if mine is a fake or what - got it cheapish on amazon marketplace.

Heres mine for reference.

I think it's real leather because:
1. There are wrinkles where the material folds (like the bottom).
2. It smells like leather.
3. I remember that the box looked genuine.
Bonded leather is a possibility. Sorry about discussing this in two threads, alexluckett - I made this one before seeing the other one.

The cracking is more evidence it is not genuine leather - google says genuine leather doesn't do that, wheras faux leather does - I can confirm that by looking at my leather wallet.

About the edges being made of plastic, my point was that the edges are not seperate to the rest of the case, as far as I can work out. This is easier to see on the pull tab section, where the smooth part (the plastic edge) merges into the 'leather' part (on my case at least).

How do you know it's bonded leather?

Also, can bonded leather legally be advertised as 'real leather'? Can't find much about it on google..

I can't believe I've just spent 20 minutes reading about leather and derivatives thereof :p

"Depending on jurisdiction, [bonded leather] may still be labeled as "Genuine Leather"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leather

Funnily enough I've just gone back to my Amazon order from January, and nowhere does it state that the case is leather (of any description).
That the the case is a genuine HTC item is hinted at in the description ("HTC HTCPOS550 Desire HD Ace Mobile Phone Pouch by HTC").

It doesn't have the texture and look-at-me quality that upmarket "real leather" cases have (Piel Frama, beyzacases), but it does have a faint leather smell and has the used leather sheen and feel to it. And the edges are rolled. And it does the job.

It seems that on some sites it's described as leather, on some it's not. On the amazon (UK) page, it doesn't have leather in the title, but it does in the description:

Amazon UK said:
The HTC Desire Leather HD Pouch PO S550 Original HTC Desire Leather HD Pouch

On other sites such as expansys it is described as

Expansys said:
high durable leather
Unfortunately, HTC doesn't have any accessory information at all on their website so there's no way of knowing if the error is HTC's fault or the sellers' faults for misinterpreting the identity of the material. I am sure it is a genuine HTC product though, and if they are describing it as leather themselves they should be ashamed.

Why is this so important anyway?
I wouldn't care if it were made out of paper that looked enough like leather.
It's job is to protect our phone and I honestly don't care what it's made of.
Mine is still in good condition after 6months.

In my opinion, it's important that a product is advertised properly. It's a consumer right that a product I buy is as described. It stops people getting ripped off, being disappointed with their purchases, etc etc.

As well as that, I am of the opinion that real leather is more durable and more suitable for the job - for example, panart's pouch already has wrinkles at the bottom, those wrinkles could easily turn to cracks, and with more use, the material could snap completely. If this happens once the warranty/return period is over, he'll have to buy another case.

I got mine from Amazon and it is like yours.

For what its worth i think that it is real leather but they have covered up the edges with fake leather. There is definitely a different type of leather on the edges and i believe that is the fake stuff where as the actual pouch is real.

I don't like the pouch anyway since i can't use my headphones with it. I don't like silicone cases though so i need to find a pouch that will let me use the headphones. I've been putting my phone in upside down and because of the camera sticking out the case has widened and my phone is loose when inside.

As the sockets are on the bottom why not head first into the pouch?

HTC do have an official accessory store, but it is run by Expansy's on behalf of HTC :)

Store: http://www.htcaccessorystore.com/
Pouch: http://www.htcaccessorystore.com/uk/p_htc_item.aspx?i=204062

It is described by HTC as: "Made from high durable leather"
