Possible to modify a ROM before flashing?

I attempted to modify a custom ROM before flashing it but Amon Ra gave me an error that it was bad and could not be opened. Anyone know?

Did you unzip the rom or use 7zip to change out files?
If you unzipped the rom it has to be signed when zipping it back up.
Use 7zip to add/subtract edit files. You can do it without unzipping.

I used Winrar without unzipping and it didnt work >.<

Also 7zip says add is not supported

I have changed some images with 7zip before flashing. What were you trying to change
